The Swiss Alps in the Jungfrau region. The rain abated for a few hours to let us emerge from our soaked tent. The alps are a timeless reminder of how grand and ancient our planet is. It’s belittling and you spend a moment reflecting on the meager scale of our own existence, or you grab some nordic walking poles and do your best to scale them!
Untouched snow atop the mountain ranges of Jungfrau which is considered to be the highest point in Europe – aptly named “Top of Europe”. The virgin landscape view from the top of Jungfrau makes it one of the rare places in the world practically unadulterated. / / Featured in Panoramas group in June 2008 / Top 10 in PEAKS & MOUNTAIN TOPS challenge Some of my other work: / / / © Kuntal Daftary
The higher regions of the Swiss Alps are an area that can be relied on for year-round snow. This picture was taken from atop Jungfrau(joch) (the highest mountain in the Swiss Alps). To get there you take a small train that winds through the picturesque Grindelwald Valley on your way to the top. Once there you can enjoy the spectacular views from the Sphinx (seen here in the top left corner).

Under the spell of the Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau. / This remarkable round-trip by modern cogwheel railway has long been one of Europe’s top holiday attractions. The railway station on Kleine Scheidegg railway station, altitude 2061 m, is situated right at the foot of the notorious Eiger North Face. Kleine Scheidegg, the pass between the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald Valleys, lies directly beneath the towering trio of the Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau. From here, the Jungfrau Railway begins its remarkable journey to the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe.
Trümmelbachfälle (Trümmelbach waterfalls) is a unique-in-Europe series of waterfalls inside the mountain. Trümmelbach brook alone drains the whole glaciated area of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau with up to 20.000 liters per second! Take a lift through the mountain and get fascinated by the power of water… Photographing the waterfalls was all but easy: difficult lighting with very high contrast between lit water and dark rocks, long exposures of several seconds, best views being often from bridges trembling due to both tourists’ steps and enormous water masses, omnipresent spray of glacial water and everything wet… Fascinating experience, I have spent two great hours photographing, completely forgetting about the rest of my family… Lauterbrunnental, Switzerland. I love waterfalls! At this place, the waters of Trümmelbach get out of the mountain. To give you a scale of this nature’s wonder: you may notice guard-rails in the lower right corner… Lauterbrunnental, Switzerland. July 2008. Canon EOS 300X, Sigma 28-135, Manfrotto tripod. Such a mighty stream! No surprise that the waters of Trümmelbach are so powerful; the area this brook drains includes the famous glaciated mountain trio Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau... Last turn… and leave the darkness! These are the last meters where the waters of Trümmelbach are still hidden inside of the mountain. Lauterbrunnental, Switzerland. July 2008. The title ‘Jungfrau’(German) refers to maiden/virgin in English. The window on floor level is fundamental for this mis-en-scene.
