  • It is somewhat rare to have a lot of snowfall at Joshua Tree National Park, however when it does snow, it should not be missed. There are many places on the western part of the park to explore, including Jumbo Rocks. Here, you can see snow covering the creosote bushes and spidery ocotillo. Near the rock are small jumping cholla cactus covered in snow. Some information about this park: / Joshua Tree has some of most unique shaped trees but also has a very interesting and complex rock system. Through erosion the exposed granite monoliths and rocks became worn and loose and sometimes you can find verticle cuts through the rocks, which are referred to as monzogranite. These broken terrace walls, which appear here on the left side is a formation known as a dike, which was formed from molten rock pushing into these joint fractures. These type of rocks can be seen in the areas known as Jumbo Rocks, Wonderland of Rocks, and Split Rock which are labeled on the map of the park and easy to find.

  • / / Ellie Elephant is created from chalk pastels, ink, charcoal and acrylic paint with a crackle effect to make her hide look authentic. I finally got around to enlarging her, as i have her loaded as a small image for a card, but now she’s available as a print also…one of my favourites :) I hope you like her….she’s hiding in the jungle

  • My son turned to watch in disbelief and amazement as his toy plane actually took flight in the living room. After grazing my head it eventually crashed and burned near the end table. Both have been grounded ever since…. This is straight out of the camera. Nothing is attached to the airplane. The secret to the shot lies in the EXIF data which I have provided below. Camera: Canon EOS 40D / Exposure: 1/3200 sec / Aperture: f/2.2 / Focal Length: 50 mm / ISO Speed: 3200 / Exposure Bias: 0 EV / Flash: Flash did not fire

  • Asiana 747 takes off during rainy weather at LAX. Vapor even coming from top of cockpit.

  • This is fun: next time you go to a birthday party, make a replacement label for something consumable, like a big can of Fosters, or a bottle of wine, or something even wackier, like this one went on a big can of stewed tomatoes. If it’s someone that knows you, they’ll be glad to get 2 presents in one, something to consume plus a nice pencil holder when they’re done! Or it’s even funnier to give one to someone you don’t know, and watch them try to figure out how to react. / You can do this with an old record album or CD too, don’t wrap it, just Put a new front on it and hand it to them and don’t say anything, and look at them with great expectations as if they’re the only one in the room who doesn’t get it. People’s brains make very effective rubber balls… (Be careful NOT to duplicate a real label too closely: I turned a package of Goldfish crackers into Trouser Trouts, but it looked too good, and not one person noticed the difference. Or maybe they were all just stupid.)

  • you don’t need mumbo jumbo

  • Virgin Atlantic 747-400 (G-VFAB) climbing after taking off from London Heathrow (LHR) runway 9R. Taken with Olympus Evolt E500 + Zuiko 40-150mm. This is the only one in the fleet that has this livery.

  • Jumbo the red elephant looks like he is standing on top of a passing car, during the dust storm in Qld.

  • The Asian Elephant is slightly smaller than its African relatives; the easiest way to distinguish the two is that the Asian elephant has smaller ears. The Asian Elephant tends to grow to around two to four meters (7–12 feet) in height and 3,000–5,000 kilograms (6,500–11,000 pounds) in weight. Elephants thinkness of there skin is 3-4cm think. Elephants eat up to 149-169kg of vegetation a day The Asian Elephant has other differences from its African relatives, including a more arched back than the African, one semi-prehensile “finger” at the tip of its trunk as opposed to two, four nails on each hind foot instead of three, and 19 pairs of ribs instead of 21. Also, unlike the African Elephant, the female Asian Elephant usually lacks tusks; if tusks — in that case called “tushes” — are present, they are barely visible, and only seen when the female opens her mouth. The enamel plates of the molars are greater in number and closer together in Asian elephants. [3] Some males may also lack tusks; these individuals are called “makhnas”, and are especially common among the Sri Lankan elephant population. Furthermore, the forehead has two hemispherical bulges, unlike the flat front of the African elephant. Unlike African elephants which rarely use their forefeet for anything other than digging or scraping soil, Asian elephants are more agile at using their feet in conjunction with the trunk for manipulating objects. The Asian elephant also has very thin eyes and a yellow hide in the summer. / “Wikipeida” /

  • Sorry, I just couldn’t get that phrase out of my mind while I was photographing my huge old Jumbo acoustic guitar! I know, I should be ashamed of myself… (but I’m not.) This is a “Jumbo” guitar from the very early 1970’s. It has outrageously deep, ultra rich bass tones and enough volume to chase skinny little electric axes right out of the room! It is in perfect condition, because I treat it like a baby, but I love the incredible sound that it produces! If humans have to kill trees, this is the ONLY legitimate justification for it! LOL I know… I’m sick, and I need help! This photo was taken with a Canon EOS 10D with a Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 wide-angle prime lens. The shutter speed was 1/10th sec at f/8. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. Your comments are always welcome! Constructive criticism is appreciated. © 2009 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist.
