  • Dryas iulia (incorrectly spelled julia), commonly called the Julia butterfly or Julia Heliconian, is a species of butterfly (an insect). The sole representative of its genus, the Julia is native from Brazil to southern Texas and Florida, and in summer can sometimes be found as far north as eastern Nebraska. Over 15 subspecies have been described. Its wingspan ranges from 82 to 92 mm, and it is colored orange (brighter in male specimens) with black markings; this species is somewhat unpalatable to birds and belongs to the “orange” Batesian mimic complex (Pinheiro 1996). It feeds on the nectar of flowers including lantana and shepherd’s needle (Scandix pecten-veneris), and its caterpillars form hosts in passion vines including Passiflora affinis and Passiflora lutea (the yellow passionvine) in Texas. The Julia is a fast flier and frequents clearings, paths, and margins of forests and woodlands. The species is popular in butterfly houses because it is long-lived and active throughout the day.

  • FRACTAL SAFETY NET Fractal “Safety Net” was created out of Chaos with the Quaternion Julia Set, based on five conditions. With special effects rendered in skylight, I then proceeded to apply a little ambience, then I closed the program out and re-opened the image a second time in Photoshop. Lighting, luminosity, and colors were now added, along with embossing. After a few more adjustments with brightness and contrast, Fractal “Safety Net” was now complete. I do hope you like it!!

  • I have been keeping myself busy, playing with Moebius Julias. I originally imported this into Photoshop CS, just to put my signature on it, but I couldn’t resist all those triangles! I used the polygon lasso tool and gave them their own layers. Then I added the drop shadow and bevel layer styles to give it more depth. Featured in the ART IN MATH Group, August 11, 2009.

  • Julia had a wonderful garden full of beautiful flowers, plants and trees. Her favorite was her little magic tree. Each year for Christmas, the tree would begin to glow. All she had to do was add a few little bulbs and bows with seeds for the animals and birds. What a glorious little tree it was. She could even see it through her window in a snow storm. Each year, she would find a new gift under her tree on Christmas morning. It would be something she or her family or friends would need. She hoped this year the gift would be many blessings and love for everyone she loved. Who knows? It is a magic tree. :o) Created in Fractal Explorer using the JT Eyes Julia formula.
