Jules the Disgruntled Pumpkin by Kim Hawke / / Jules the Pumpkin had rotting holes shaped like hearts for ears. He didn’t know why; they were just like that. It was his vine’s fault. / On Halloween night, Jules hopped into a kitchen through the window and accidentally landed on a knife, which went flying and stuck into the wall. He hid under the dining room table as someone came in the room. / “Hey, Mom! Can you come in here for a minute?” a girl with a chocolate-smeared mouth said. Her mom came in. “There are little pumpkin seed-shaped droppings all over the floor.” / “Hmm. Mice, maybe. They need more fiber in their diet. Cheese isn’t good for your intestines. We’ll pour some of Grandma Goo’s fiber chocolate that she keeps sneaking into our cereal on the floor for the mouse,” the mom said. The two of them cackled as they got rid of the food they hated so much. / The doorbell rang and the two left the room to give kids candy. / Jules hopped out from under the table and sniffed the fiber-loaded chocolate, a.k.a. The Laxative. It smelled all right to Jules, so he ate a few pieces and if you want to know what happened to Jules, then ask an evil little kid who has fed a laxative to seagulls. / The next morning, Grandma Goo screamed, and three generations of Goo women stood around Jules. / “I didn’t know pumpkins had mouths,” the youngest Goo said. / Mother Goo made Jules into a pumpkin pie and froze him for Thanksgiving. When the pie was finished baking and its smell filled the house, it didn’t smell any different from the other pumpkin pies the Goos had ever made because fiber doesn’t have a smell… / Jules, squashed, mashed, baked, and brooding, sat in the freezer for a few weeks, waiting to be let out of the cold, aluminum-foil-covered prison so he could get revenge on the Goos. / Finally, the morning came when Jules was defrosted and set next to the turkey guts that come in a little white bag inside the raw turkey. Jules just sat there on the counter, not being able to see or anything, but sensing the salmonella that was possibly crawling over to his crust. He felt cheated. How did he end up in such a disgusting kitchen filled with women who gossiped about the other women from their church who gossiped when he’d had such an adventurous life outside this place? Curiosity smashed the pumpkin. / Eventually, after witnessing some nibbling on his crust in the kitchen, Jules was brought out to the dining room and his gooey crust was sliced by the crusty Goo, who had specs of flour in her wrinkles. A room full or people grabbed their sliced of Jules before anyone in another part of the room had a chance to get theirs, and soon Jules was divided and sliding down esophaguses to do his real work. / In less than an hour, twenty-something Goos were all racing and pushing for the only bathroom in the small duplex, and Jules was released into the sewer, which had a leaky pipe that drained into a pumpkin patch on the outskirts of town, and Jules soon took his regular form again, growing on heart-shaped vines.

I have always said that i believe in karma…yet so many crazy messed up things happened in my life that I did not bring on. I’ve recently made a lot of changes in my life and I know they are the changes that I should have made years ago, like allowing someone to know and love me like Frank does. I’ve learned who my true friends are…aww. It’s true that we don’t know what we’ve got until we lose it, but it’s also true that we don’t know what we’ve been missing until it arrives. Frank, I always remember the love you give me…i’ll remember how you’ve changed me…i have no special talents..i am only passionately curious. There’s something about the look in your eyes, something I noticed when the light was just right, it reminded me that i was alive, and it reminds me that you’re so worth the fight…life is not a movie. Good guys don’t always lose, everybody isn’t always lying, and love, well sometimes it does conquer all…sometimes the people we meet will change us forever..do you feel it too? I have to teach myself not to read too much into everything..it comes from too long having to read so much into hardly anything at all..There are a lot of things about me that weren’t what you thought, when you first laid eyes on me. I wasn’t perfect, but you still love me, you have to love all things about me or else you would be gone by now, and you aren’t. When I am sleepy or lost on a road, or too talkative, or not talkative enough… you get me, YOU HAVE ME. / On Oct. 28, 2007, my life completely changed. I met Frank (the love of my life) and on SEPT 8, 2008, Frank asked me to marry him. i never thought i would be ready to give my life to someone until him. We are planning our wedding around the arrival home of my son who lives in Japan. Frank, you are my one true love: where there has been cold..you have brought warmth. Where my life was dark..you have brought light. Because of you..i laugh..i smile..i dare to dream again. i fell in love with you for the qualities, abilities, and outlook on life that you have. i promise to keep myself open to you. To let you see through the window of my personal world..into my innermost fears and feelings, secrets and dreams. For, our love is stronger than forever and deeper than the dreams to heaven that put us together in the first place! I love you forever and thank you for all you have done for my kids and me. Nanny defiantly sent you to me on that 28th day of October. And I am forever thankful. Frank and I

  • Many many thanks to the group hosts for featuring this vintage poster! Mariani tonic Wine – lithography by Jules Cheret, 1894 / Original image on Wikipedia Commons This image (or other media file) is in the public domain because its copyright has expired. This applies to the United States, Australia, the European Union and those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 70 years. Courtesy Wikipedia Vin Mariani (French: Mariani’s wine) was a tonic created circa 1863 by Angelo Mariani, a chemist who became intrigued with coca and its economic potential after reading Paolo Mantegazza’s paper on coca’s effects. In 1863 Mariani started marketing a wine called Vin Mariani which was made from Bordeaux wine treated with coca leaves. The ethanol in the wine acted as a solvent and extracted the cocaine from the coca leaves, altering the drink’s effect. It originally contained 6 mg of cocaine per fluid ounce of wine, but Vin Mariani which was to be exported contained 7.2 mg per ounce in order to compete with the higher cocaine content of similar drinks in the United States. / Vin Mariani was very popular in its day, even among royalty such as Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland. Pope Leo XIII and later Pope Saint Pius X were both Vin Mariani drinkers. Pope Leo awarded a Vatican gold medal to the wine, and also appeared on a poster endorsing it. / Thomas Edison also endorsed the wine, claiming it helped him stay awake for longer hours. Aprons / Bags / Buttons / Cards / Hats / Keds Shoes / Keychains / Magnets / Mousepads / Mugs / Postage / Postcards / Stickers / T-Shirt / Ties* Don’t forget my Calendar Section Born in Paris to a poor but creative family of artisans, a lack of finances meant Jules Chéret had a very limited education. At age thirteen, he began a three-year apprenticeship with a lithographer and then his interest in painting led him to take an art course at the École Nationale de Dessin. Like most other fledgling artists, Chéret studied the techniques of various artists, past and present, by visiting Paris museums. He was trained in lithography in London, England, from 1859 and 1866, where he was strongly influenced by the British approach to poster design and printing. On returning to France, influenced by the scenes of frivolity depicted in the works of Jean-Honoré Fragonard and other Rococo artists such as Antoine Watteau, Chéret created vivid poster ads for the cabarets, music halls, and theaters such as the Eldorado, the Olympia, the Folies Bergères, Theatre de l’Opera, the Alcazar d’Été and the Moulin Rouge. So much in demand was he, that he expanded his business to providing advertisements for the plays of touring troupes, municipal festivals, and then for beverages and liquors, perfumes, soaps, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. Eventually he became a major advertising force, adding the railroad companies and a number of manufacturing businesses to his client list. As his work became more popular and his large posters displaying modestly free-spirited females found a larger audience, pundits began calling him the “father of the women’s liberation.” Females had previously been depicted in art as prostitutes or puritans. The women of Chéret’s posters, joyous, elegant and lively – ‘Cherettes’, as they were popularly called — were neither. It was freeing for the women of Paris, and lead to a noticeably more open atmosphere in Paris where women were able to engage in formerly taboo activities, such as wearing low-cut bodices and smoking in public. These ‘Cherettes’ were widely seen and recognised, and a writer of the time said “It is difficult to conceive of Paris without its ‘Cheréts’.” In 1895, Chéret created the Maîtres de l’Affiche collection, a significant art publication of smaller sized reproductions featuring the best works of ninety-seven Parisian artists. His success inspired an industry that saw the emergence of a new generation of poster designers and painters such as Charles Gesmar and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. One of his students was Georges de Feure. In his old age Jules Chéret retired to the pleasant climate of the French Riviera at Nice. He died in 1932 at the age of ninety-six and was interred in the Cimetière Saint-Vincent in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. He was awarded the Légion d’honneur by the French Government in 1890 for his outstanding contributions to the graphic arts. Although his paintings earned him a certain respect, it was his work creating advertising posters, taken on just to pay his bills but eventually his dedication, for which he is remembered today. In 1933 he was honored with a posthumous exhibition of his work at the prestigious Salon d’Automne in Paris. Over the years, Chéret’s posters became much sought after by collectors from around the world.
