This image came about in an awesome way for me. Two weeks earlier, the model, Margrit, was telling me a bit about her life. She’s lived and travelled in many countries and taken lots of opportunities. She has also achieved great success with her photography. Several weeks later, I had an unusual chance to photograph her in an old train – the perfect location to reflect her life’s journey. / In Australia, Margrit has achieved her LAPS and AAPS, and is the only West Australian women to received international photographic honours AFIAP. She’s a perfectionist and it shines through in her work. As a child, my treasured stuffed animal (as all children tend to have) was a little squirrel who went on every kind of adventure with me, and my favorite story was about a lil’ squirrel named “Miss Suzy” – written by Miriam Young, and illustrated by Arnold Lobel. I love the thought of the tiny leaf-boat capturing the attention of the denizens of the pond as it passes by en route to a wonderous place. January 10th, 2009 – WOW!! Ever felt the heavy heart of saying goodbye? In love, in life, in death. Family, lovers, friends. An empty track and sad, sad heart. Whiteman Park, Swan Valley, Perth. When I found this little station, I found myself thinking of the work of two photographers: Don, an awesome photographer who loves trains! He does wonderful landscapes and other great work. He’s given me so much help over the past few years – a generous soul with a great eye for photography. Paul Louis Villani also leapt into my head. He has some incredible images of trains and train stations. While I wouldn’t even attempt to immitate his style, his work gives me so much inspiration, and got me thinking about how I would like to present this scene. I was fortunate enough to travel to Italy when I was 19, this was taken as just a naive snap happy photo on my dodgy old-school camera and I’ve cleaned it up and added some oomph in photoshop. (It’s better if you click on the image to see a larger view)

These refugee’s were traveling to Chad via Niger and stopped near our rig site to make repairs to their truck. After giving them water food and milk for the women, babies and children, they were gracious enough to let me take some shots. They still had 1000km to travel at this point…......Life is sometimes very cruel! Unfortunately i could not get any better shots of the women and children as they were safely nestled up on top. / Shot in the Sahara desert, Libya. / Nikon D300, 24 – 120mm at 58mm, f18, 1/250, ISO 200. / / . / / . /

I’d like to be able to say that when I was composing this shot I saw the plane taking off out of frame and worked out its trajectory would take it just over th e sun as it was rising, but I can’t :-(. Truth is I was so focussed on the rising sun I didn’t even notice the plane til I downloaded the shot and started working on it. So this is actually a tiny crop of the original landscape orientation I shot it in. One of those serendipitous moments you don’t even notice at the time. Taken from Bundeena Cliffs, Royal National Park just a few moments after Streaming to the Dawn. Another stumble upon going through the archives. Canon 30D / Tv: 1/15sec / Av: f/11 / ISO: 100

One girl and her guitar. Where to? Nobody knows, just a journey I guess. enjoy x Me and the Beautiful Lollie decided to hook up and create some art yesterday, so set with two cameras, two guitars, a tripod, a reflector, a few bags of clothes and make up we travelled around the country side while looking like funky Hitchhikers. Taken on a Canon 450D

The subtitle is “Angels Protect Me on My Journey”, a prayer on waking, on getting out on the right side of bed, on hitting the road, on thinking a new thought. Nice supersized. Oil on canvasboard. Actually a very small painting, and this is a detail which has a lot of nice drama going on in it. The color from the original is slightly altered, but I liked the terra cotta – green kind of wash I got by fooling with it in post op, or whatever you brilliant photographers on RB call that.

From my collection: / Emerquinox / Spirit of Alaska ~ Alaska North Star Winter Scenics Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved Universewide Emerquinox is a word I coined when I combined the words Emerge and Equinox The Great White North I took this photo in deep winter 20 January 2008 midway between Fairbanks and North Pole Alaska. In summer this area is a peat bog. It is actually quite deep as in late Autumn I have watched a cow Moose submerge herself and swim in the pond at sunset. Near the Chena River, in winter it is used as a ‘highway’ for mushers and their dogsleds and also for snowmachines. I removed the natural blue hue with a white balance adjustment. Then I desaturated selective colours pulling down the yellow, magenta, and green. With a slight adjustment on contrast, I then used the lasso tool and selected only the sky to remove the digital noise as I had my ISO setting too high at 400 and, along with the cold, this created too much noise with the original photograph. The temperature on this day had actually warmed to about 10F. Within a week it plunged again to appx minus -47F. Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi / Shooting Date/Time 20 January 2008 16:41:50 / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/125 / Av( Aperture Value ) 5.6 “Permafrost, perennially frozen ground that maintains a temperature at or below the freezing point for at least two years. Vast tracts of permafrost lie across Alaska, Canada, northern Europe and Asia, and Antarctica. About 80 percent of Alaska’s land area contains permafrost. In the Interior region, vegetation must adapt itself to short, warm summers and long, cold winters. Trees grow slowly, and their root systems must be shallow because they cannot penetrate the permafrost. In Alaska, permafrost occurs as a continuous sheet north of the Brooks Range, extending from a few inches below the surface down to as deep as 1,000 feet. As one goes south, however, it gets progressively thinner, the melted layer on top gets thicker, and holes or gaps begin to appear in it. Permafrost may extend to depths of more than 500 m (1,600 ft). Clues to the age of the permafrost of the Northern Hemisphere lie in the numerous discoveries of mammoth remains embedded in frozen ground. Mammoths became extinct about 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, coincident with the end of the most recent ice age.
