Arabian Stallion… 120 years of careful selection
This is a journal from my youth, however not a traditional journal. I was a dreamer, a wannabe romantic. This was my place where I stored quotes, pictures, songs, writings of my own, anything that inspired or touched me. I came across it the other day and thought I might try photographing it. I realize the picture is a little cluttered, but that was my intent. I wanted to give it a feeling of being from the past… perhaps victorian, which everything in that era was beautifully cluttered. Then I burned the edges wanting to give it another effect of almost being lost, which it seems sometimes that my passion that I had was almost lost until recently. / Comments are welcome, as are any helpful advice.

Most know of Pakistan as a third world fanatical Muslim country full of terrorists. I have lived in Pakistan, my parents were born and raised there and though it has its many faults it also has its many beauties, its many treasures and many things that I love and cherish. At Work is a picture of my maid, Sakina in her small and modest home where I captured her hands as she used two rocks to grind herbs and spices to make that nights meal. This is a method still used in homes where a mechanical grinder is a luxury and not a necessity. According to Sakina and her mother, herbs ground on a rock maintain the rich flavors that are often lost by all our machines.

Many RB members have asked me how I did my home page to look the way it does and I thought I would enter a journal to describe just how it was done. I hope it will be of help to you all. HOW TO USE LINKS AND IMAGES TO ENHANCE YOUR RB HOME PAGE / (To get this, go to your own online gallery site, choose your favourite banner (usually supplied by the web hosts) , right click on the image, choose properties & copy the full URL-address. Then open your “EDIT MY PROFILE”-link, put an exclamation mark (!) and then paste the copied URL-address of the image and end again with an exclamation mark (!). It will look like this (remember, DO NOT PUT IN ANY SPACES BETWEEN THE ADDRESS AND THE EXCLAMATION MARKS!) ! http://www.imagekind.com/images/buttons/buy_my_art.gif ! / (These two icons, I got from the two RedBubble Groups in their Forum Postings. Go check & find your links there. Then do the same as above.) eg. ! http://images-1.redbubble.com/img/art/cropped/size:small/view:main/958066-1-pimt-logo.jpg ! and ! http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/7122/1on1iu5.png ! To put shortcut images on your home page, follow the next steps: / 1) Go to your PUBLIC PROFILE (Open in another tab so you keep your EDIT PROFILE tab open to work on) / 2) Click on VIEW ALL ART (underneath your featured images – the big ones) / 3) Choose the pic you want to display on the front page, right click on the image, go to PROPERTIES, highlight the full URL-ADDRESS, close (OK). / 4) Go to EDIT MY PROFILE tab, type in an ! (exclamation mark), right click & paste the URL ADDRESS you copied. / 5) Now you can do one of two things: / (a) Just add the image without linking it to the picture (where people leave their comments) This is done by just typing the !, followed by the URL ADDRESS, ending with another ! (Remember, no spaces). Eg. ! http://images-0.redbubble.net/img/art/size:small/view:main/1580804-1-shed-a-tear-at-my-beauty.jpg ! Also remember to highlight the full URL-ADDRESS when you copy, i.e. see to it that you have a .jpg or .png or .gif at the end of the address and a http://images-0.redbubble.net ….. at the beginning as shown in the example. / (b) Add the image and the link taking the user to the page where your image is displayed. This is done as follows: Follow steps 1 to 4 above, type in an exclamation mark (!), followed by the FULL URL-ADDRESS, then another exclamation mark. Now add a colon ( : ). Leave as is and then go to the page (in another tab or a new page) where your photo/image is displayed to the public (the place where people can leave comments). Look at the top (all the way up where your Internet Explorer Page shows the URL-ADDRESS of the page you are on now) eg. http://www.redbubble.com/people/craftloft/art Copy this address by highlighting all and right click and copy. Go back to your EDIT YOUR PROFILE tab, paste this copied info immediately after the colon ( : ). No exclamation mark is necessary at the end of this procedure. / 6) Follow these steps with all the images you want to put on your front page. Remember to put a space between EACH image description if you want to put your images next to each other. And when you’ve added five images, remember to enter and then start with the next five images, etc. until you are finished. When you’re finished remember to save your work. I always save and then view my public profile in another tab to see if I made mistakes. / 7) As shown on my home page, I usually just put five xsmall pics next to another, but the size I explained above, is for small images. If you want the images to be as small as mine just change the small part of the URL address to xsmall by typing in the x* before the *small in the copied URL ADDRESS of the image (under properties). Eg. http://images-2.redbubble.net/img/art/size:small/view:main/1620163-2-swan-wannabe.jpg Change the small to xsmall and you get the same size pics as shown below. Newest Artworks – Not on my Home Page! / / / / / ________________________ ARTWORKS, DESIGNS & PHOTOS CHOSEN AS GROUP AVATARS / – the avatar (3 August 2008 to 13 August 2008) for the National Parks of the World Group hosted by Philip Johnson and Scott Robertson. / - the avatar for the Public Art Group hosted by Alan Findlater and Roslyn Lunetta and it’s web counterpart Public Art To do the above, do the following: / a) Choose the image you want (by going to the tab where your image is shown under VIEW ALL ART in your public profile. / b) Click on the image which will take you to the page where your image is shown to the public for commenting. / c) Next to your big picture, on the right hand side, there is a buy-banner ( ) which shows a choice between cards and prints. If you want to put a card on your home page, then choose CARDS. / d) When the card is displayed, right click on the image, choose PROPERTIES, highlight the FULL URL-ADDRESS and right click copy. / e) Go to the EDIT MY PROFILE tab – Put an exclamation mark, paste the copied info, follow steps 1 to 5 as explained above. / f) If you want to put a link to the group where your work is featured do the following: / i) Put quotation marks ( “ ) Type the name of the group, type quotation marks ( “ ) again, immediately followed by a colon ( : ) Leave as is for the moment. / ii) Go to the group’s main page in another tab. Use your Internet Explorer URL-ADDRESS (at the top of your page), right click and copy. / iii) Go back to the tab where your EDIT YOUR PROFILE tab is and immediately after the colon ( : ), paste the address you copied. REMEMBER: NO SPACES BETWEEN ANYTHING!!! eg.” National Parks of the World Group ” : http://www.redbubble.com/groups/ontario-provincial-parks-art / ________________________ VIEW PER GALLERY TRADITIONAL ART _PAINTINGS: People Portraits & Faces _PAINTINGS: Animals _PAINTINGS: Trees & Plants _PAINTINGS: Flowers (To do the above layout, use steps 1 to 7 as explained above) But instead of putting images next to each other, just enter after each image’s coding for display to show your pics as above. Also follow step (f) of steps a to f above, to link to the different sections you want to show! ) HOW TO CATEGORIZE YOUR ART / 8) When you upload an image, choose a TAG as description, eg. ANCIENTEGYPT and tag all the images fitting this description with exactly the same named tag. When you’re finished, go to the tab where you EDIT YOUR PROFILE. / 9) First, add your best image of this section, (by now you must already know how to do this) as follows: ! http://images-2.redbubble.net/img/art/cropped/size:xsmall/view:main/1076850-2-nefertiti-mysterious-and-powerful.jpg !, then space bar, then a quotation mark ( “ ), then the name of your SECTION, eg. PAINTINGS: People of ANCIENT EGYPT (Leave as is for the moment) / 10) Open in another tab any redbubble page (it could be the home page or your own profile page, it doesn’t matter). Check for the SEARCH-button. In front of it is an open space where you can type in the tag you just named, eg. ANCIENTEGYPT. / 11) Click on SEARCH. This will show all the work you tagged as ANCIENTEGYPT. / 12) Go to the top of the Internet Explorer Page, copy the URL-Address. / 13) Go back to your tab where you EDIT YOUR PROFILE. Immediately after the quotation mark ( “ ) , type in the name of your section, eg. Paintings:Ancient Egypt. Type in another “ , then right click and paste the address you copied in step 12. Now the closing will look as follows (Remember: no spaces before or after the name you give): “ Paintings: Ancient Egypt ” : http://www.redbubble.com/search/ANCIENT EGYPT_ ______________________ / You can do the same with the part below. Now just change the section (tagged description) with the group and group URL. I think this is one of the quickest and easiest ways to get a nice portrait in Photoshop. Again, it isn’t beauty retouching. Unlike the Dreamy Glow effect this should :-) be a little more realistic. You can use the image here to start with or use one of your own. Once you have the image open, duplicate it and then you are going to run the Surface Blur filter. If you are working with a version of Photoshop prior to CS2 you are going to have to use the Median filter, this filter isn’t quite as good as the Surface Blur filter but you should still be able to achieve a similar result. I’ve divided my image into two so that you can see what is going on – don’t you do this :-) unless you want to of course. You are looking to keep the lips, teeth, eyes to a certain degree – see image below. If you are working on the same image you can just punch in the same numbers. Still working on the blurred layer, hold down the Alt key and click on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the layers palette. This will make the mask black (hide all) which is exactly what we want, because we are going to brush back in the Surface Blur. Make sure your f/ground colour is set to white and you have a comfortable size soft edged brush – start painting back in the face avoiding the eyebrows, eyes, mouth and teeth. If you make a mistake, just switch your f/ground to black by pressing x key on the keybaord, fix it, press x again to switch back to white. If you want to make sure that you have painted back in every bit of blur, Hold down the Alt key and click on the mask this will give you a B&W version – see below – and you can fix it from there. Alt click on the mask to take it back to the normal view. I’ve taken the opacity of the surface blur layer down to 80%, you can choose whatever you want. Normally, this is the time where you would start evening out the skin tones, but you’re not going to do that :-) Before you go any further, rename the layer you just did the surface blur on to ….. hmmm …. Surface Blur. Making sure that layer is active, hold the Alt key and click on the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette – a small dialogue box will appear. If you don’t change the mode in the dialogue box, you won’t get the ‘Fill with soft light neutral colour 50% grey’ Now you’re going to pick a colour from the original b/ground to use on the face – so, with a soft edged brush selected hold down the Alt key and the brush will change to the eyedropper tool – once you have the colour selected just release the Alt key to go back to the brush. I used R-192 G-141 B-121. This is going to look terrible when you first brush it on – panic not – just dial the opacity of the layer down to about 40%. You will have to be quite careful with this layer, remember you are not working on a mask. The image below has the opacity at 100% and is not completely covered so that you can see what is happening. Turn the opacity down and complete the skin. The image below shows the completed colour with the opacity at 40% You can try some things now, like reducing the opacity of the surface blur layer … if you are using this image try about 55% and you could stop here if you wanted to – but there is more. Leave the opacity of the surface blur layer at 80% for the moment and the colour layer at 40%. All skin has some texture in it and you are going to replace some of the texture that was wiped out with the surface blur filter. Hold down the Alt key and press on the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette – fill out the little dialogue box as you did earlier. Now go to Filter>Noise>Add Noise and use 5, Uniform, Monochromatic – press OK to accept. Now go to Filter>Stylize>Emboss and try an angle of -90, height 15, amount 100%. Next go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and on this particular image try a radius of 0.5 pixels. And there you have the texture for the new skin. Once you are happy with the portrait, flatten the image duplicate the layer change the blend mode to overlay and sharpen with the High Pass Filter – Alt click on the layer mask icon to get an inverted mask (black – hide all) and with a soft edged brush, brush back in the areas you want sharp. Try different opacity levels for the surface blur layer and the texture layer. I’ve gone ahead and lowered the opacity of the colour layer to 20%, left the blur and texture layers at 80% then used seperate layers created in the same way as you did before but without clipping them with the previous layer, to burn the eyebrows, eyelashes, eye makeup and hair – then did the same to use some dodge on the eyes and hair. You could also use another layer to slightly sharpen the image overall to give the skin a less blurred look, as I have in the image below.

Complete ASCII list of symbols available using the alt + Number key pad on a computer. All of these symbols can be inserted in any text sentence or by themselves in text space by holding down the ( alt ) key – the one beside the space bar on a computer keyboard – and typing the number on the number pad on the right side of a computer keyboard. It does not work with the numbers across the top of the keyboard. Some of these will be useful to you and some are not. Why use a alt and number combination for the alphabet. Note: there are many more that can be found using four digit numbers, however many of them are repeats of those listed here. Note 2: If you really want to create passwords that are nearly impossible to break then use some of these symbols along with your normal passwords. Note 3: For those of you who do not have a number pad on your keyboard you can access many symbols by going to ( Start ) – where you go to find your list of programs on your computer. In the search box that shows up when you click (Start) – type character map . A window will open with all types of symbols and you can click on any one then click copy, then paste it to the location you wish to use. Note 4: For some operating systems you can find the Character map by going to ( Start ) then to (Programs) then to (Accessories). It will be listed as one of the program options under windows accessories and can be accessed the same way as described in Note 3 Note 5: If you do not have a number keyboard on your computer you can use the list below and copy and paste any symbol from this list. Just highlight the symbol you wish to use and then copy it. You might want to create your own library of symbols in a program like Notepad on your computer then save it to a file you can keep on your bottom tool bar for easy access. I would not suggest using MS Word since that program inserts hidden characters that RB can not read so your copy and paste will often not work if done from Word/ Have Fun!!!!!!!!! If you’re not used to promoting your own work, writing articles or showing off your talents, there are some simple things you can do to test the waters and build confidence. Self promotion needn’t always be about saying ‘here, look at my art’. Your expertise, experiences and knowledge are just as good advertisements for you as an artist: Write a journal about an art event, gallery opening or exhibition you’ve attended. Sell someone else. Tell us about another artist you’ve spotted. Interview them. Give us a behind the scenes look at how you work. Show us pictures. Share hints and tips or write up a tutorial or ‘how to’ about the techniques you use. Share some great resources you’ve found online. Let us know about a big exhibition or show that’s coming to your town. Collaborate on a work with another artist then write about the experience. Tell us the story behind one of your works. Where it happened or what it means to you. Teach yourself a new technique or skill and write about what you learnt. Test drive (borrow) new camera equipment or computer software and write a review. / Once you’ve done these things, make sure you take the opportunity to get them out to the wider world. If social networking is your thing, post it as a note on Facebook, tweet about it on Twitter with a link back to the article and use relevant keywords so others may find it in Twitter search. Drop an email to a local paper or press if you’ve written about a local event. If you’ve written a great tutorial or review, think about bloggers that may be interested in sharing it with their readers. / / The key to getting started is to find something related to your art or your work that you’re confident in sharing or writing about. Don’t just focus on RedBubble as an audience, think about how you can get that extra bit of mileage out of what you’ve written about and who else might be interested. Above all, don’t underestimate your own knowledge or expertise, or assume people won’t be interested or they’ll already know about it. Writing the Community posts has revealed time and time again that this usually isn’t the case and for every 10 people who are familiar with the topic, there are 10 more who really gain some insight from what you’ve written. Nat
