Travelling in Timor-Leste with a gang of kids, orphans from the civil war. Nazarello would play hide and seek with the camera. Eventually it dawned on me that I could frame an ‘empty’ shot and he would suddenly appear in it, from out of nowhere, often with a fine understanding – somehow – of my composition. I gave him the camera and he took some of the best shots I’ve seen.

As the sun sets over Ataúro Island young Timorese search for shells, which they make into bracelets and necklaces to sell to tourists. Many of these kids are orphans, and homeless. They struggle to survive on less than a dollar a day.
