  • I painted this a few years ago and still have the original four by three foot painting in my studio. / I have a wide range of musical appreciation and Trane along with Miles Davis continue to inspire me in life and in art. I can make the print available if anyones interested. / - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - / / – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – / John Coltrane is sometimes described as one of jazz’s most influential musicians, but one is hard put to find followers who actually play in his style. Rather, he is influential by example, inspiring musicians to experiment, take chances, and devote themselves to their craft. The controversy about his work has never died down, but partially as a result, his name lives on and his recordings continue to remain available and to be reissued frequently. / - / His album BLUE TRAIN is certainly deserving of being hailed as a “classic,” a term grossly overused these days. Imagination or creativity doesn’t always come in the form of extreme busyness, and if you give this album your full attention, it will offer riches galore. / There is good reason why BLUE TRAIN is listed on many a jazz educator’s essential recordings list: It IS essential.

  • ...Is a great woman. Or, in this case, four. I originally made this t-shirt (a satire on the Experimental Jetset tee, “John& Paul& Ringo& George.”) with iron-on letters, as some kind of “f-ck you” to the tiresome musical snobs who fawn over male deities like The Beatles and forget the numerous women in rock – and also as an in-joke between my partner and I, who both always say “Yoko was the best Beatle”. So many people asked me where I got the tee that I decided to make a finished version for you lovely RedBubble types. And no, it’s not Helvetica, but just like we don’t really need another t-shirt glorifying The Beatles, do we really need to let Helvetica get any more out of control than it already is? ;-)

  • Just downstream from where the Franklin River joins the Gordon RIver in Tasmania’s South-West World Heritage Area. Despite its remote, pristine appearance, this spot recieves thousands of visitors per year from nearby Strahan. After rafting the Franklin River, it’s a bit of a shock to arrive here amidst a throng of tourists, a float plane, and a large tourist ferry… Limited to cards on RedBubble, this image is available as a limited edition print from my website © Doug Thost 2005 Tech details: Canon EOS1n with 20-35mm lens, 30sec exposure on Fuji Provia 100

  • acrylic on paper 14”x17” / Dancing in lighted pools of Jello-textured neon. “That’s the way to do it,” an old stranger called to the young man who, being suddenly aware of what he was doing, stopped, looked over his shoulder and glanced down at the ragged multi-colored sheet that was pulled tightly around his shoulders. He leaned back and peered up at the sun. Smoke rose from the side of a brick building and the odor or ginger floated through the air. The source of both puzzled him, as he remembered distinctly thinking he was the only person in the world just a few moments before. The old man smiled a toothless smear of flabby lips and bowed down to the dancing youth, who smiled back, jiggled aimlessly for a few seconds on thin, scratched legs and then sat down on a patch of grass in from of a building that had been painted by clowns. The young man pulled back the corner of his gown of rainbow hues and let out his heart, which had been beating all along, but in being freed, started to do a dance all of its own, though it had no legs. It also sang, which surprised the young man as he had always thought he was mute.

  • I’ve uploaded this as a larger image to allow for print sales. Model is Joceline. This is from a series I’m working on mixing ballet and bondage’. I’m trying to relate to dancers being tied to their craft and the physical scars and effects such an art form has on the human body.

  • The grand staircase, this time shot with only available light/mirk for a more unsettling ‘Silent Hill’ look. Just a little light tone mapping to avoid burn-out and retain shadow detail, otherwise this is all natural – including the small scrap of very blue wallpaper in the bottom left.

  • “Floating on Clouds” was shot in Goulds Newfoundland Canada. This is The Dory in natural light. I was talking to a friend about shooting “The Dory” and “Floating on Clouds” and how I used a polarizer to bring out the clouds on the water (as seen here) and removed it and used a flash to shoot “The Dory”. I was wondering in hindsight what I would have come up with if I had used the polarizer and flash at the same time. I know I would have given up about up to two stops with the filter which would have meant a slower shutter speed and the boat was moving, ever so slightly, so it may not have worked out? But maybe next time, live and learn!
