  • “Been a long time since I rock and rolled. . .” They were so androgynous in that era anyway, it was a cinch. My apologies to everyone who has written me. I will get back to you. I finally got a diagnosis, and I’ve been away trying to get better.

  • 20”x 22” acrylic on canvas. Copyright Derek Shockey 2006. No. 1 in ongoing series. the basic concept behind the “product” series is that i, and my art, are a product of my experience. this series is more for therapy, i wish to face some issues that still trouble me instead of letting them eat me up from the inside, i want to grow, and i want to heal…. i want to be as honest and open as possible, and i feel the best way for me to ensure that i stay true to that is to take away the fact that it is me, and take on a third person perspective, hence jimmy best, different name, but it is me. this is the story of jimmy best… this piece a simple self portrait, the listing of fears in his shadow is meant to show that these fears are within him, some are still hard to see, showing his reluctance to share, the fact that he is facing away from the list is meant to be positive, jimmy is trying to move past his fears. the title “jimmy best” comes from the graffitti of SAMO aka Jean -Michel Basquiat, “jimmy best, on his back to the suckerpunch of his childhood files”

  • Taken in 1966, this is one of my favourite images of the 60’s of the iconic DJ, Sir Jimmy Savile OBE. I took the shot when I was 20 during my assistant days at 1:15 am, after a long advertising shoot for a petrol company with my boss, top fashion and advertising photographer John Cowan. I asked Sir Jim if I could run a couple of rolls of film for my portfolio. True gent that he is, Jim said “Sure!” even though every one was pretty tired after the 5 hour gasoline ad session. Anyhow, this is the result and it remains one of my favourite pictures to this day as it shows Sir Jim as he really was and is – a strong and generous human being who did not take himself too seriously. You are a true professional Jim, and I am eternally grateful to you for giving me this opportunity. Technical Details: Camera: Hasselblad 500C / Lens: 80mm Planar / Film: Tri-X / ASA: 400 rated at 200 / Exposure: 1/125 sec at f/16 / Lighting: 5,000 Joule Strobe in perspex light bank. © 1966 John Hooton Photography

  • At a car show I was at this guy was showing a totally rickety GMC pick up. It was so worn it looked awesome. It totally looked like something you would see some backwoods freakshow driving in. I hope you like my artful touch to this awesome front end of a “Jimmy” Pick Up Please View Larger

  • A fun photo for today. I’m trying to sort through all of my photos and this one turned up. I took it at the beginning of the year when I was testing my (then) new Canon EOS 5D Mk II. I think this was amongst the first photos that I took with it. This is my brother-in-law’s dog named Jimmy Dean. He’s such a cutie that I thought I’d share just because of the awwww factor :) This is pretty much straight out of camera except for a vibrance adjustment.
