  • We were hiking along a snow covered trail in Jasper National Park (Alberta Canada) and came across this outpost. Just had to shoot it. Featured on the RedBubble homepage on Dec 24, 2008 Taken with Canon Rebel and Sigma 75-300mm lens

  • / / I took this shot in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada in the fall of 2006. I could have stayed here all day soaking in the view. Hope you enjoy. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / / Shot with Canon Rebel / 3 shots. Handheld. Photomatix to process. / / Featured in: / / Real Life Art Group / All Countries – Streams, Brooks, Creeks, Rivers Group / Rivers, Lakes & Dams / / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / About Me… / / I have always had an interest in photography. I can still remember my very first camera that my parents had given to me when I was about 8 years old. I took that camera everywhere and snapped shots of anything and everything, however it wasn’t until much later in life that I was really bitten by the photography bug. I was planning a big move to the Canadian Rockies and thought now is the perfect time to buy my new camera gear for shooting wildlife. I bought all the equipment I needed that would put me up close with all the wildlife that the mountains had to offer. So off I went chasing Bears, Bighorn sheep, Moose, Elk and Wolves… pretty much any critter I could capture with my lens. It was a fascinating and thrilling experience. Then fate brought to me a girl and she would change my life forever… Newfoundland is where I now call home, with my beautiful wife and baby son. This province is a photographer’s paradise. The scenes change from day to day and the opportunities for capturing them are endless. With my camera in tow I now begin my journey through Newfoundland, photographing and capturing her raw and rugged beauty to share with the world. I hope you enjoy the photographs presented here. The rugged and treacherous coastlines give way only to the unforgiving North Atlantic Ocean. It is a coastline marked with lighthouses that act as ever watching sentinels to welcome weary travellers home. It is a land of beautiful & quaint coastal towns, villages and cities. Newfoundland is a land visited by frozen giants from the North that create a sense of awe when seen by human eyes as they float down what is known as “Iceberg alley”. It is a land visited by massive whales during the summer that attract multitudes to the shorelines. It is a land rich in history and folklore and it is a land inhabited by a people who will welcome you with open arms. It is a land you need to visit… Newfoundland… In Living Color, captures the raw and rugged beauty of a landscape still yet untouched and marred by man’s corrupt hand. It is a tribute to a true Eden and its people that dwell there. / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / SOME OF MY FAVS / click on the image to link to that image / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

Background Information: / Jasper is a specialized municipality in western Alberta, Canada. It is the commercial center of Jasper National Park, located in the Canadian Rockies in the Athabasca River valley. Jasper is 362 kilometres (225 mi), or approximately 3 1/2 hours west of Edmonton. Jasper is 290 kilometres (180 mi) north of Banff, Alberta, with the Icefields Parkway connecting the Jasper townsite to Lake Louise in Banff National Park. It was established as a specialized municipality on July 20, 2001 and the governance of Jasper is shared between the Municipality of Jasper and Parks Canada Agency. Jasper House was first a Northwest Company, and later Hudson’s Bay Company, fur trade outpost on the York Factory Express trade route to Fort Vancouver on the lower Columbia River. Jasper National Park was established in 1907, with the Canadian Northern Railway beginning service to Jasper in 1912. The Jasper townsite was surveyed in 1913 by H. Matheson. By 1931, Jasper was accessible by road from Edmonton, and in 1940 the scenic Icefields Parkway opened, connecting Banff and Jasper. source: wikipedia Train / Mooring Post / Sunset in Tofino /

Background Information: / This picture is taken near Athabasca Falls . Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park is just 23 metres high. However, it is not known for its height. Instead it is known for the force of the falling water due to the quantity of water flowing. Even on a cold morning in the fall, copious amounts of water flow over the falls. A layer of hard quartzite has allowed the falls to cut into the softer limestone below carving the short gorge and a number of potholes. White water rafting often starts below the falls to travel downstream on the Athabasca River to Jasper, Alberta. It is a class 5 waterfall, with a drop of 80 ft (24 m) and a width of 60 ft (18 m). • Neither of us did the “clothing thing” when using the filtered light of blinds. The obvious comparisons simply have to be made so be kind and remember this IS just a kitten. :_D You’d never believe that tiny kitten was playing ferociously less than 3 minutes before the lighting became fun. I asked her to come to and she did. She looked up at me while we were both sitting on the couch (where she is seen here). I reached a good distance away and brought the NIkon D90 out of its case. She sat next to me and watched. I took off the lens cap stood up squatted in front of her with the camera aimed her way to get the light settings. Jasper sat there quietly. Once the stripes started making patterns on her face, she got a little antsy because the direct sunlight wasn’t comfortable. I got her to face away from the direct glare with a hand moved to the side of the camera; her eyes followed it as though it was the most interesting thing on the planet. I think I shot 50 images before I got bored. Jasper didn’t. But immediately after I set down the camera and stood up, her eyes perked up, pointy ears gave me full attention, and she ran to find a toy mouse. She didn’t even need to hear me say “bring it to me cuz you’re playing ‘fetch’, not me!” This cat is gonna be waaaaaaaaaaayyy too much fun. She was born with a lifetime license to charm! :-D About the shot… This is direct from the camera. I used some of the onboard editing options and compared the results with the best I could do with LightRoom. Nothing seemed particularly better so having an “as is” shot seemed like the most interesting way to go. And I consider this one “as is” even tho the exposure was automatically enhanced using onboard D-lighting and enlarged for Red Bubble prints using Elements 3. NIkkor 18 – 105 mm lens / f-stop: 4.5 / full manual control with 1/3 bracketing (under/even/over) / exposure 1/30 / ISO: 200 (the baseline for Nikon D90’s) / metering mode: spot / focal length: 22mm / exposure bias: -1.3 The sun, courtesy God, was setting thru the livingroom blinds and over the town of Penn Valley, California. Yes, I knew the cat’s eye in the direct light would be slightly squinted. I thought about saying I planned that so she’s look more sly. Then I woke up. Generously featured in the Paws & Claws Group featured in Nikon D90 Users Group with the deepest appreciation!

  • THE SUBJECT: / Another springtime dawn breaks over this ancient land spreading its light and warmth and burning off the mist in the valleys just as it has done for untold millennia.
