A year ago we had a devastating fire in our community which destroyed an ancient transitional ecosystem of extraordinary beauty. One of my reactions at the time was this overwhelming desire to create permanence with my work. I wanted to print on metal. I wanted something stronger than paper to commit my images to. Yesterday I was telling Annie that I realized that paper is my medium. The fact that it is fragile, that it rips apart, easily stains, can be dissolved, burns, all these qualities make it so much more compatible with the pathos of my own soul. I want to understand the alchemical secrets of it’s botanical body. Each paper has it’s own true nature, and how that energizes the images I work with, this is something I want to experience.

I would like to invite Asian people and others to comment on my latest piece of work. Most of the elements I have included are of Japanese Yokai influence. That was the main idea behind the image. The imagery I’ve used is somewhat uncertain to me, because I don’t know all the stories behind them as they’re influenced by imagery from other artists and anime. Which I think wasn’t such a good idea on my part, as I created the artwork using elements that I don’t really understand completely. (my bad) The basic idea behind it was only to illustrate the link between the spirit world and our reality…in a Japanese setting. A very simple idea, but I realize some of the elements might have more in-depth meanings or stories behind them. Evangeline Than, has pointed out the inclusion of the centipede in the piece. Evangeline, could you elaborate on it further? So if you’ve got any stories, ghost stories, folk tales etc. please comment below. I’d like to learn more.

Thanks you for all the interest and sales RedBubble Community. It is amazing to look at the statistics of all your designs to see peoples viewing habits. Its truly valuable feedback. As a teacher of Design & Technology at a school in Sydney I talk about the importance of market research and seeking feedback on ideas. redbubble is a great tool for this. you can to try ideas, get feedback, that is supportive, encouraging, and from a community of creative peers, and the best bit no scary burden of a financial commitment :) One things for sure people like ChiChi. Seeing the interest in HumpChi has been truly flattering and motivating.

  • MY FAVOURITES - "Japanese Windflowers" by Tiffany Dryburgh
    by Adriana Glackin

Not all images in “My Favourites” necessarily illicit images or memories from childhood. “Japanese Windflowers” by Tiffany Dryburgh caught my imagination and everytime I look at this image, the same story unfolds… Helena is 83 and has lived in her inner city cottage all her life. The cottage, originally a worker’s cottage had been in her family since 1910. She was born in that simple home, as had all her children. Always a happy home, Helena simply delighted in tending the small garden. How times had changed, the neighbours had come and gone, apartment blocks now stood where a lot of the workers’ cottages once stood. But still, Helena maintained her sanctuary. The japanese windflowers were her pride and joy, temperamental things they can be, but this year’s blooms were the finest yet. Helena was looking forward to saturday, that was the day her children would be visiting and wouldn’t they be surprised at the many blooms filling Helena’s garden! ps. apologies to those who are perhaps expecting great pieces of writing – sorry – I’m definitely not a writer in any way, shape or form, I’m simply unleashing the images I see in my head when I view the favourites I have chosen. I feel very brave in doing this because I don’t know any of you, nor you know me – so it’s safe (except I have a friend or two on here but they probably will see this as my latest fad ; > ).

A Japanese whale fleet is embarking on another ‘research’ mission in the waters of the Antarctic, and part of their operation is to slaughter 50 humpback whales. The Greenpeace campaign ship, Esperanza, will be shadowing the fleet and the group is planning a non-violent protest. Having been fortunate to witness humpbacks up close, it totally astounds me as to reason why this meaningless hunt on the species continues. I, and thousands of others, signed petitions in Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia during August-October 2006, which were specifically aimed at seeing this practice foiled. Unfortunately, it seems efforts have failed and the Japanese Government has won the day. Are they a heartless bunch of bastards?

This is my new Mamiya C33 (TLR), a Japanese camera from the 60’s. I decided to buy it (a Medium Format camera) for the higher resolution in the dark room – It hasn’t needed it’s battery’s changed for about forty years because the camera’s spring loaded! Here’s some shots of it’s exterior and viewfinder: / / I’m don’t know if the shots I took with it will actually develop properly because the camera’s fairly beaten up. My fingers are crossed!

Hey everyone!! The wonderfully creative Jo O’Brien has just begun a chain of interviews to bring all of us closer to some of our favorite artists!! The first ball was given to MuscularTeeth who interviewed the famous Karin Taylor and Butchart. Karin then proceed to interview me and Mui-Ling !! What an honor!! Yay!! So now presenting Midori Furze!!! ....................................................................................................................................................... How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspect of your life? I carry a timer set up as an alarm clock. / When I am in the mode of creativity I often forget the time, so I set the timer for whenever my next important time will be e.g. picking up children, start cooking dinner or phone call someone. / When the bell goes, I switch myself and remember where I am and do what I’m suppose to do so I can manage my days on this planet. / I also have a diary which tells me what I must do on that day. / If the diary has a blank space, I smile and go straight to my studio and stay there all day but these days I always have something on it. : ((( / I am lucky to have a husband who accepts me as I am. I hope he does. / He might believe that it’s normal because I am Japanese. Hehehe… / By the way I thought he was a bit different from others but I liked him as he is and I thought “Well… he is an unusual guy. I guess because he is an Australian!!” After we moved to Australia I realised he IS a unique, even from others in Australia. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful I am a great fan of Karin Taylor and Frozenfa. I know many wonderful people on Red Bubble and I love them too, but Karin and fa are soooooooooooooo special to me. / They are special to many people on RB and I am proud I know them too. / Oh, it has to be one person? / OK then, that will be TIM ( the Twisted Inner Monster is a Frozenfa’s creation). / I know he isn’t really a person, but I think he is close enough. / He makes me smile. / He makes me laugh. / Hug~! Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you I have been on RB for 6 months, and I have met a lot of wonderful people and seen great artworks. It is very difficult to choose only 5 works. Can I put 50? No? Oh, it is soooooooooooooo tough!! OK, here it is… / The Band! by Ellen / Ron Carter 02 by Jean M. Laffita / Shoreline by kafka / Dead Friends 5 by John Douglas / Imaginary Life 2007 by Paul Ruiz If you see their works, you will understand why I choose them!! / I’m also inspired by these lovely people and their works, – hahpistuff, Ken Mucke, Tine Wiggens, yanmos, Matt Tworkowski, vladstudio, girlinthestars, Cailean, Ronald wigman and of course Karin Taylor and Frozenfa. Sorry I can’t mention all of you. : ((( / Thank you for reading. / Lots of loooooooove and a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig hug! ....................................................................................................................................................... Thank you SO SO much for your time and effort, Midori!!!! Thanks for letting me do this interview with you! Hugs!! Thank you so much for doing this interview with me, Midori!! =D And of course thank you everyone for reading!! do me and Midori a favor and help journal about this interview to let all your friends know, will ya? am quite a small fry with not many ppl watching me, so it’d be great if others can read this interview too! Hell, am so broadcasting this interview into my blog for everyone to see. Is it ok, Midori? =D PS: Tim is squealing like a lil school girl in my head, it’s so funny.. ahahahah.. Yay!! And so yesterday i’ve managed to interview Midori Furze!! am so so thankful that she’s willing to take the time to answer. Please do read her interview here!! =D Now presenting one of my favorite artist on RB, BarbBarcikKeith!!! / / ......................................................................................................................................................... My Creativity How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? You know, the first thing that popped into my head with this question is “don’t clean the house very much”!! I do what I have to do only.. nothing extra. The house still manages to get clean (with only 2 of us here, it’s not that hard!) though. / Actually, I don’t get out much. I have deadlines and things that I have to get done so I’m at the drawing board as often as possible. I do take breaks because my hands won’t allow me to stay at it as long as I would like to. BUT.. I am married to a man that does the wash.. cooks the meals.. does the shopping and even runs the vacuum every once in a while and THAT really helps a lot. He does hate my headphones though… Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful One person??? You must be mad! I’ve been on RB for about 8 months now and I don’t think I’ve ever met a more caring, considerate or complimentary group of people in my life! The encouragement is wonderful and the camaraderie and extremely helpful. I’ve recommended the Bubble to other artists on other sites as well and the ones that have actually joined have found it a lot like home… Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you / In no particular order: / The Letter by Roz McQuillan touched me with the way the painting is done just enough to let you know that something important is happening. Love the way she did it.. and find it inspiring in many ways. / Temptress by Lindseyh blew my mind the first time I saw it! I thought the execution exceptional but the idea of it all was just too cool.. (you sure I can only have five?) / Then there is Falcon Studies by eric shepherd is simply PERFECT! I love the way he put all if it together.. the colors, the background.. everything about it is inspiring.. / I Drew Drew by alleycatsgarden which is really superb pencil work and has given me a lot of ideas for future works. / Ruffled Gold by John Houle shows what you can do with a simple pencil. The way he did the feathers.. mind-blowing!! Now, I would like to mention some others that have equally inspired and awed me: Brian Towers, Carlos Solorza, Terry Dunnett, Matthew Thornburg, L.K. Southward, Randy Jones, Bec Winnel and I could go on forever but there’s only so much space. / Numerous artists, photographers have made a difference either in me or in my art. This is a great place to be!! / ......................................................................................................................................................... Thank you so so much, Barb!! Thank you for the honor. i really love your works! i’m especially touched by how you’re helping the Noah’s Lost Ark Animal Sanctuary.. and i really find you an inspiration because of how you can create such magical piece even with all the pain in your hands. it’s really encouraging. i believe anyone who’ve had RSI or is having one will be amazed to see how strong you are. Everyone, please do check out her wonderful drawings!! And do check out her shots and drawings of some of the Big Cats saved by Noah Ark, they’ll sure to blow you away !! So sorry i can only interview 2 person.. i have so many fav artist here on RB and i can only interview 2?! waaaa… T_T i can’t wait to read the interviews of the rest of you!! I think Jo will be coming up with some forum to gather all the wonderful interviews together. that’d be awesome eh? Love you all!!! (= ^ . ^ =)

I am proud to unveil a new painting from my studio entitled, “Segawa Kikunjojo II”. (Dancing The Part Of Yamauba) My painting is styled after ancient (1760 era) Japanese Graphic art, by artists like Tori Kiyomitsu Ga and Eshi Tori Kiyomasu Hitsu and based on paintings like, The Autumn Moon Above Ishi Mountain and Segawa Kikunojo II, Dancing the Part of Yamuba. / This is the first in my study paintings of ancient Japanese artwork. It was a very intense and rewarding piece to work on. Every line and brush stroke needed to be calculated and yet also flow with an ease and grace. This is my first original painting in a series of many I intend to delve into over the next year. / I am very drawn to Japanese art and grew up with traditional Japanese artwork in my home. The beauty of this type of art has always captured me, as I hope my work will for you as well. Here are some photos of my art as it is being created and completed…enjoy! xoxo

  • Good Morning. Consider this "Artistic Inspiration" :P

Hello my Lovely Lolita Enthusiasts (If your not, then you will be by the time I’m through! :P) I thought I would make a journal with artistic inspiration this morning as to what the Lolita Subculture is all about. :P Lolita comes in several different types, but the most common styles are Punk Lolita, Goth Lolita, Sweet Lolita and Classic Lolita All of which have ribbons and frills, but they different in colors and styles. :D Lolita fashion is a style of dress orginated in Japan. Although “Lolita” is a reference to Vladimir Nabokov’s famous novel, and Lolita is often worn by teens, most adherents present themselves as Victorian children or baby dolls and prefer to look “cute” rather than “sexy”. Japanese culture places a higher value upon extremely youthful appearance and behavior than Western, and some adult women buy large amounts of products, such as Hello Kitty goods, that are typically marketed only to children in the West. Lolita fashion is perhaps a more visible extension of this phenomenon. In general, Lolita fashion tends to imitate Victorian-style girl’s clothing and often aims to imitate the look of Victorian porcelain dolls. Skirts are knee length and may have a crinoline or petticoat to add volume. As in mainstream Japanese fashion, over-knee socks or stockings are extremely popular. Black fishnet stockings and white or black tights are also common. Shoes or boots with high heels – though not usually stiletto heels – such as Mary Janes, complete the look. Frilly, ruffled or lace-trimmed Victorian blouses are also popular especially with “Gothic Lolita” types, who may also favour long skirts and jackets rather than overtly “childish” designs. Apart from the occasional shortness of skirts, designs are usually modest, sometimes with long lace-capped sleeves. Lace headdress and bracelets are usually worn. Gothic Lolita: / Gothic Lolita or “GothLoli” (ゴスロリ, gosurori; sometimes alternatively “Loli-Goth”) is a youth fashion among Japanese teenagers and young women. It emphasizes Victorian-style girl’s clothing and often aims to imitate the look of Victorian porcelain dolls. Gothloli’s name and origin is a combination of lolita fashion—appearing deliberately cute to the point of looking childish—and certain styles found within gothic fashion. / / / Punk Lolita: / Gothic Punk has a rock-inspired look. It usually features tartans, stripes, chains, piercings, and an overall more industrial look. Lolita punk is similar, but with a lolita twist. Lolita punk keeps the lolita bell skirt, but is less feminine and keep the elements of punk. / / / Sweet Lolita: / They have lots of lace and ribbons, usually light-colored (although there are black/white sweet lolita), attempting to look as cute and little-girlish as possible. End results typically exudes a doll like appearance. / Classic Lolita: / They are more traditional, look more like the Victorian fashion, light-coloured, also more mature-looking. Traditional Maid-style clothing and Alice in Wonderland-style apron may be classified into this genre. / / / Some Other Styles: Kimono Lolita: As the name suggest, they are crossover of Kimono and lace-featured skirt. / / Country Lolita: A style of Lolita with a Country touch. Fabrics are usually gingham or soft floral prints. Aprons are common, as well as small straw hats and other “country” accessories. / Shiro/Kuro Lolita: Shiro (“white”) Loli are lolita who wear all white, while Kuro (“black”) Loli are lolita who wear all black. Almost all brands carry items in this style. There are also lolita who wear only blue, pink, red, and so on. Each of these lolita is named after the color they chose. These Images and descriptions are not the property of myself, they belong to their respective owners. / References: / http://jerinae.multiply.com/journal/item/22 / Google images

I am about to do two more paintings in the series of Stinky and Smokey but was worried that they won’t be sellable because Smokey is a smoker! Now I wouldn’t normally worry about political correctness and it is my intent for Smokey to be a smoker. I am not glorifying smoking by any means, I am kinda saying Smokey being a smoker is a bit smelly like stinky- so there, now I have insulted all the smokers. I was a smoker and my husband is a smoker and I really don’t have that much problem with anyone smoking that’s up to them. I just came up with the idea and would like to keep Smokey smoking in all of the paintings. It never occured to me that there would be a problem until a friend suggested I leave the cigarettes out because people won’t want to buy a painting with a smoker in it. Then my husband showed me an article in the Manly Daily -Undertow page 11 on Friday April 24. This article was about Manly Council digitally removing a cigarette from a man’s mouth in a painting that appeared on their website because of their anti smoking policy. This makes me want Smokey to smoke even more. I am wondering what all the other artists out there think. To smoke or to not smoke this is the question

Kokeshi (こけし, kokeshi?) are simply wooden (木, ki, ko?) or small (小, ko?) dolls (芥子, keshi) originally from northern Japan. They are handmade from wood, have a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. The body has a floral design painted in red, black, and sometimes yellow, and covered with a layer of wax. One characteristic of kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. The bottom is marked with the signature of the artist. (Wiki:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kokeshi) / Ben My otomusuko (younger son) Ben who turns 13 in December, made this beautiful timber kokeshi doll for me during his Japanese Studies class… it remains unfinished in the raw timber state, and i really quite like it that way. I found this old tin and it fit her perfectly for a litte photo shoot this morning. / Ben’s Kokeshi with Sarah my choujo (eldest daughter) who is 17 now, in the insert wearing a beautiful kimono she was dressed up in by a shopkeeper in Japan, she has just come home from a 2 week stay in Japan with a host family Kokeshi were first produced by Kiji-shi (wood artisans) at the Shinchi Shuraku, near the Togatta Onsen, Zaō, Miyagi Prefecture5 from where kokeshi making techniques spread to other spa areas in the Tōhoku Region. It is said that these dolls were originally made during the middle of the Edo period (1600–1868) to be sold to people who were visiting the hot springs in the north-east of the country. A few of my own kokeshi designs below: / The woods used for kokeshi vary, with cherry used for its darkness and dogwood for its softer qualities. Itaya-kaede, a Japanese maple, is also used in the creation of both traditional and creative dolls. The wood is left outdoors to season for one to five years before it can be used.
