Dedicated to “Shanghaiwu” ,this work was inspired by her beautiful art. A combination of Sumi & Computer the Ancient and the Modern. The base of this image is Suminagashi, known in the west as Sumi.( Ancient)Marbling. / It is Japanese water painting using inks,natural minerals,stylus,brushes / and I use a hand fan to move the medium. / Sometimes if there is a nice wind blowing in the window,then nature lends a hand. The willow leaves are from Japanese hand painted papers,the tree itself is from one of my early hand made marbled papers. / I made it a .jpg and played around with it a bit on the computer.(Modern) David.

This is a combination of decorated paper in which a real (deceased ) butterfly was embeded between two layers of rice paper.Sumi mineral gold ( iron ) for texture. / Together with a bit of grass and straw.Whatever happens to be at hand. / And of course my iMac. David.

The butterfly is part of some hand made Japanese marbled papers,the butterfly is pressed between two sheets of rice paper. / And so it did find immortality.

The temple cat at Zoshigaya. Well, one of them. After I took this we walked into the temple and spotted another three cats wandering around all looking very peaceful and happy. This chap looked particularly cool though and just posed for me.

Taken on a blustery morning out in my backyard. These Japanese maple trees are a joy to watch through the year, but on this Autumn morning I was inspired to create a design with the lovely branches and red leaves.

This little bamboo whisk has become and integral part of my daily routine. I use it to mix my matcha teas. I’m always impressed with the simple beauty of these Japanese tea ceremony items. It’s such a beautiful object on its own and the craftsmanship is impressive – cut from a single piece. I’m a creature of habit and this simple tool really reinforces my love of the ritual.
