Ikebukuro is, after Shibuya and Shinjuku, one of the busiest spots in Tokyo. At night the opportunities for photography are everywhere. But it can be overwhelming sometimes. I usually choose to stay in one place for a while and let the action unfold, rather than to always be hunting for it. Nikon D300 / 85mm f/1.4 AF D

light painting. no editing. straight from the camera.

this was done with no editing or post processing. pink gelled flashes to the temple gate. blue gelled LED flashlight to the path. a homemade portable cold cathode behind the subject. I was experimenting with a new light source in this image. I have never used cathodes before. The light was intended for car interior decoration. I cut off the cigar lighter plug and attached my own 12v power source and a switch. I am very happy with the result and hop to make some new colors…..

This pretty lady was sitting at the traffic lights so I went over and asked her: ”すみませんしゃしんをとてもいですか？”Or, “Do you mind if I take your photo?” “Not at all”, she said…. Nikon D300 with my 1979 vintage 50mm f/1.2 AI lens; the King of Bokeh!

This shot was the main centre-spread of a feature I recently had published in Tokyo’s ‘Metropolis’ magazine. It has also featured recently in mags in Australia, Singapore and Poland. To beging with the guy hanging out of the window spotted me and then just wouldnt lean out again. I attached my camera to a 10ft monopod, put a cable-release on and held the camera out with an 11mm lens on it. He thought I had walked off and I still got exactly the angle I wanted….

I was walking around Omotesando and Harajuku to kill some time before meeting a friend the other night and found this patch of cosmos flowers. Planted out in the street, behind them were the lights of a shop and a vending machine was providing some light from my side. Just beautiful. Got mesmerised for a good fifteen minutes by these flowers. Nikon D300 / 85mm f/1.4 AF D

I was out with one of my students the other night. We were on our way to the top of the NS Building and found this view from the 13th Floor. The borders top and bottom are actually the window-surrounds. I shot this at about f/7.1 for 2seconds, lens-hood removed, lens flat against the window with my weight pushing against it to brace it still. No tripod? Just improvise! Nikon D300 / Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8

I was just chillin’ at home when this burglar entered my house…good thing my house is completely empty. Straight out of the camera. taken with a canon 400D. the red lights in the back are LEDs and the blue ‘ribbon’ is done with a rewired cold cathode. A blue gelled flash fired at 1/2 lit the subject. The red bird logo is also done in camera. It is done with a stencil and a flash.

This was taken last autumn during a very wet evening in Akiba, Tokyo. I was on my way to work and just happened to have my camera with me. I really shouldn’t do this as it usually ends up with me having to sprint to make work on time….
