  • The Covered Bazaar in Istanbul (Turkish: Kapalı Çarşısı) is also well known as the “Grand Bazaar” or the “Golden Bazaar”. The original part once was built with wood under Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II. in the year 1461, only eight years after the conquest of Constantiople and developed under the reign of Sultan Suleyman (1520-1566). Because of several fires the bazar had to be restored later and was more and more developed. The dealers in the bazaar are still today usually located together with their branches like gold shops, carpet or leather stores. The world-famous bazaar accommodates hundreds of small business with nice decorated goods. Beautiful ceramic work, porcelain, glass painting, small wooden boxes, figured articles from alabaster, waterpipes and multicolored turkish slippers, plates with nice decoration, tea glasses and oil lamps, decorative copper cans, arts and crafts from sea foam, curved daggers as well as carpets and scarfs spreading a flair of the old Orient. The “Covered Bazaar” is an enormous labyrinth, where many people passes at certain times in the magnificent main lanes. Many handcraftsmen and artists, which were in former times also located in the bazaar, are now working in the quartier around, their products are for sale in the bazaar shops. © Photo and text by Jens Helmstedt / Editorial Use License Related images: / Photo published in German-language Magazine / Zukunft – Issue 07/2008 in my article about / the quartier Beyazit in Istanbul. Second in a set of two paintings depicting Turkish ‘Whirling Dervishes’. / This painting is available for sale 70×50cm acrylic paint on canvas. Bubble mail me if you are interested! Adapted from Amedeo Preziosi – Turks here / The original work of art is in the Public Domain because of its age. A link to the origins and history of this religious group can be found here From wikimedia here Sufi whirling (or Sufi spinning), (Arabic: رقص سماع‎) is a turning meditation that originated among Sufis, which is still practiced by the Dervishes of the Mevlevi order. It is a symbolic ritual through which dervishes (also called semazens) aim to reach the “perfect” (kemal). The aim is to abandon one’s nafs, egos or personal desires, by listening to God and the music (hence the term sema), thinking about God and whirling which has been compared to the orbiting of the planets in the Solar System around the sun. As explained by Sufis: In the symbolism of the Sema ritual, the semazen’s camel’s hair hat (sikke) represents the tombstone of the ego; his wide, white skirt represents the ego’s shroud. By removing his black cloak, he is spiritually reborn to the truth. At the beginning of the Sema, by holding his arms crosswise, the semazen appears to represent the number one, thus testifying to God’s unity. While whirling, his arms are open: his right arm is directed to the sky, ready to receive God’s beneficence; his left hand, upon which his eyes are fastened, is turned toward the earth. The semazen conveys God’s spiritual gift to those who are witnessing the Sema. Revolving from right to left around the heart, the semazen embraces all humanity with love. The human being has been created with love in order to love. Mevlâna Jalâluddîn Rumi says, “All loves are a bridge to Divine love. Yet, those who have not had a taste of it do not know!” More products available ACRYLIC ART CALENDARS CARDS POETRY PHOTOGRAPHY – ANIMALS PHOTOGRAPHY -CANDID SHOTS PHOTOGRAPHY – CATS AND DOGS PHOTOGRAPHY – CONTEMPORARY WORK PHOTOGRAPHY – FLOWERS PHOTOGRAPHY – INSECTS PHOTOGRAPHY – TRADITIONALLY TURKISH PHOTOGRAPHY – TREE AND TREE PARTS T-SHİRTS Why not follow me on / or join me at More products available An acrylic painting 40×40cm based upon a photograph in the Public Domain here This media file is in the public domain in the United States.
