Le Marais is the Jewish Quarter of Paris. When I was there last, I was fortunate to sample and indulge in some delicious kosher food. The delicious freshly baked pastries and cakes are out of this world! The bookshops and Synagogue are also very interesting features. It is a humming buzzing place to be! Quite a lot of *Hasidic Jews are seen in the streets on Chabbat (Sabbath). A concentrated cultural wonder, in this amazing city, Paris. Hasidism * (also Chasidism), an influential mystical Jewish movement founded in Poland in the 18th century in reaction to the rigid acedemicism of rabbinical Judaism. The movement, which emphasized the importance of religious enthusiasm rather than learning, had a strong popular following; it was inspired by Israel ben Eliezer (c.1700-60), called Baal-Shem-Tov (Heb.,=master of the good name) because of his reputation as a miraculous healer. Denounced in 1781 as heretical, the movement declined sharply in the 19th century, but fundamentalist communities developed from it and Hasidism is still a force in Jewish life, particularly in Israel and New York.

The Western Wall or simply the Kotel , is a Jewish religious site located in the Old City of Jerusalem. The wall itself dates from the Second Temple period, (516 BCE – 70 CE). It is sometimes referred to as the Wailing Wall, referring to Jews who come to the site to mourn the destruction of the Holy Temple.
Constructed in 1874, Mea She’arim was one of the first neighborhoods to be built outside the Old City walls of Jerusalem. / She’arim is synonymous with ultra orthodoxy. This neighborhood is a window into a way of life that was practiced in Eastern Europe several centuries ago. Its religious inhabitants focus their lives on Talmudic learning. / Such devotion to religion and learning brings with it a desire for segregation from less observant people and the changing ideas of modernism. / Me’a She’arim is in another sense both miles and years away.

The image was taken in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre Jerusalem. / The image shows The Stone of the Anointing. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is a Christian church within the walled Old City of Jerusalem. The site is venerated by most Christians as Golgotha, (the Hill of Calvary), where the New Testament says that Jesus was crucified, and is said to also contain the place where Jesus was buried (the sepulchre). The church has been an important pilgrimage destination since at least the 4th century, as the purported site of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. Today it also serves as the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem. Just inside the entrance is The Stone of Anointing, believed to be the spot where Jesus’ body was prepared for burial by Joseph of Arimathea. It is the 13th Station of the Cross. The lamps that hang over the stone are contributed by Armenians, Copts, Greeks and Latins.

The image was taken in Mizpe Ramon Israel at the Crater promenade. / These 2 girls were playing on the edge of the cliff with no fear. / Mitzpe Ramon (lit. Ramon Lookout) is a town in the Negev desert of southern Israel. It is situated on the northern ridge at an elevation of 2,400 feet (800m.) overlooking an enormous erosion cirque known as the Ramon Crater. This crater, or makhtesh, as it is called in Hebrew (a term also used by geologists around the world) is 28 miles long and five miles wide. It is a formation unique to Israel and the Sinai. / In 2007, Mitzpe Ramon had a population of 5,500. / Mitzpe Ramon was originally founded in 1951 as a camp for the workers building the road to Eilat. The town’s first permanent residents, immigrants from North Africa and Romania, settled there in the 1960s, and it became the southernmost of the Negev’s development towns. Mitzpe Ramon remains small and struggling, with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. One of the original opportunities for founding a town in this location was to take advantage of traffic on Route 40 traveling to and returning from Eilat in the south, a few nearby military bases and some chalk quarries. Several large military bases (with over 10,000 soldiers altogether) surround the town, including the large Ramon Airbase. The Wise Astronomy Observatory is located 5 km to the east. The development of Mitzpe Ramon was adversely affected by the opening of Route 90 in the late 1960s. After the inauguration of this highway, traffic to and from Eilat bypassed Mitzpe Ramon almost entirely. However, growing interest in ecotourism, jeep trekking and hiking, and the upgrading of Route 40, which is considered a more scenic route to Eilat, have improved matters since the mid-1990s. A hotel opened in Mitzpe Ramon in the late-1990s which has an indoor swimming pool. There is a Visitors Centre overlooking the Ramon Crater and the fit can walk down into the crater for a 4 to 5 hour treck without any shade. There is a llama and alpaca farm and other attractions. Due to the desert climate, Mitzpe Ramon experiences very hot summers and cold winters.

Saturday evening (22.8.09) in Kedumim Square in the Old City of Jaffa in Israel, marked the beginning of a week of Nigerian culture, art and film festival. / I found an elevated position to take up and have a clear view of the main stage where Nigerian dancers performed later in the evening. / While waiting and taking some candid shots of the crowd, these two young boys had some fun with the water fountain. / This shot was a quick point and shoot to capture the moment. / Process: / In order to remain focused on the boys and the shooting water, I cut them out with the pen tool, copying the selection and then pasting on a new layer. / The surroundings are very distracting, so on the primary layer I added a radial blur filter, pushing the amount up to 28 – centred zoom effect @ best quality, adding depth.
