The Isle of Skye lies of the West Coast of Scotland. I was sitting on top of a cliff on the Island at 4am with my Border Collie and Camera by my side, just dreaming till day break when i spotted the light over what I call the Lower Isles breaking through the early morning clouds. Eilean Donan Castle one of the Iconic Scottish Castles was just a magic place to visit and photograph. I spent close to 9 hours taking in the surrounds, the atmosphere and the serenity and of course the odd photo or two. Here is one of my favourites, I really like the balance of light and the reflections. This was the 3rd last photo I took during this 9 hour period, and goes to show that patience can pay off. A favorite image of mine for the message that it contained for me. A small island nearly swept over by the incoming tides as a small crack in the gathering storm allowed for a colorful sunset on this PAcific Ocean beach. An image with a message in it for me, for while the world can be swirling around you, your faith can be that refuge, that rock to grab onto as the world flies by you.

My good friend and Celt Ossian kindly let me take some photographs of him wearing a traditional plaid. We lived on the Isle of Mull together for nearly 5 years. The castle in the background is Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, where Ossian worked for a time . I decided to upload this image today in honour of being awarded Image of the Week by the group ‘The Scots are Coming’ .

Always spectular at this spot on the most northerly point of Isle of Lewis where the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea meet. The waves that come into these weather-beaten cliffs can truly awesome. / The waves in this image are around 50 feet high and lap the top of the cliffs in places. It was truly a remarkable site that you almost see the White Horses running through the waters. A croft is a very small farm, or smallholding. Sheep and a few cattle will be kept, and maybe a few crops grown, mostly potatoes, since they do well on the often wet and impoverished soil. Summer is a very short season at this Latitude (57 degrees North) Very few people will make a full living from crofting, and have other full- time employment. There are also quite a few ‘holiday cottages’, or second homes, purchased by ‘incomers’ / since many indigenous folk have given up the crofting life for what they consider to be an easier, or more attractive living. / The weather here can be pretty unforgiving !! / Tarskavaig, on a day like this, sits in a very idyllic situation , with the Cuillin hills as a backdrop. The mountain here is known as ‘The Blaven’. Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, f22, with polarising filter, on tripod, single RAW file, processed in PS CS3 with Levels and Curves adjustments. LAB colour employed to saturate the colours. / The line of cottages was used to draw the eye into the scene. The beautiful Isle of Skye. / Typical Scottish Highland weather, bursts of sunlight, lasting for three minutes if you are lucky, between heavy showers that soak you to the skin, lasting around five hours. Or more. LOL ! / You don’t have to be mad to live here, but it helps, as the saying goes ! A magic place all the same ! / Have you ever tried to set up a tripod where the heather and bog myrtle grow in abundance, teetering on the brink of a raging burn? (Burn = river) It ain’t easy ! / It causes you endless grief, for one thing, the blasted tripod wobbles around, and it disturbs those dear wee midges, which bite you to the brink of insanity, then you have a wee puppy craving attention threatening to knock the tripod/camera/you into the burn, and I can’t swim either. / Combined with Family members watching your attempts and laughing then getting bored, it is a small wonder that any images get produced at all. Professional ?? Ha Ha Ha Ha !! / Hysterical laughter ! Shot on my CANON EOS 40D, mounted, sort of, on my tripod, polarising filter, f22, 1/4 sec, 17-85mm IS Canon lens, at 22mm, iso100, auto wb, three shot RAW files processed in Photomatix, then fiddled around with in PS CS3, with some more selective tone mapping applied. LAB colour to finish. / Slight vignette. Suisinish is an abandoned village reached after a rough hour- long walk from Kilbride, near Torrin, Isle of Skye. / This old cottage is too modern to have been one of the dwellings where the folk were evicted to make way for the sheep, which were more profitable to the greedy landowners of the time. Many of the families were separated, and forced to emigrate to America, Canada, and Australia. / I cannot begin to feel their anguish. / There are many ruins scattered around the Brae (hillside), evidence of a thriving, close-knit community torn apart by human greed. Maybe this bulding was built early in the twentieth century, I have no idea and can find no information. / Back to the present….. / There was quite a wait for some usable light, a chilly fierce wind was blowing, rain was brewing, nothing new ! We sat in the shelter of one of those deserted ruins, eating a cheese piece, ( sandwich ) and a cheering cup of hot coffee from the thermos, reflecting on how ‘they’ lived then, compared to us nowadays, and watching the sheep that are now the only inhabitants of this beautiful place. / Rowan trees were planted in the belief they kept evil spirits away, and it is considered very bad luck to cut one down, even today ! This cottage is surrounded by them, I guess the magic didn’t work. A three shot HDR. CanonEOS 40D mounted on tripod, iso 100, auto wb, f22, RAW files converted in Photomatix, and touched up in Adobe CS3. / A little Orton also applied to ‘pop’ the texture of the stone. / A slight vignette added.
