I was sitting on top of a cliff on the Island at 4am with my Border Collie and Camera by my side, just dreaming till day break when i spotted the light over what I call the Lower Isles breaking through the early morning clouds. I was waxing sentimental today about my trip over a year ago to the Highlands of Scotland that included a visit to picturesque Skye. The Isle of Skye is a hauntingly beautiful land the likes of which I’ve never seen before or since. If there’s one place I’ve traveled to that I’m bound to return, it’s this gorgeous place. This photo was my first ever attempt at a panorama. The land in this picture is known as the Quiraing, It’s formed as a result of landslipping, that is, whole series of the earth falling away from each other at different rates, at least my understanding of it. The phenomena creates an amazing view does it not? I would later see scenes from this same vantage point in the motion picture, Stardust (an awesome story by Neil Gaiman worth reading and watching).

Continuing my series World from Above with a view of the medieval Kisimul Castle which lies on a rock in Castlebay on the Outer Hebridean island of Barra. Historic Scotland site Taken just before landing at the island’s beach airport. At the start of my 2007 tour of the Outer Hebrides, we left cloudy Glasgow to fly to sunny Barra on the only scheduled flight in the world to land on a beach with the timetable dictated by the tides! I can highly recommend this amazing trip in a Twin Otter prop plane seating just 15 passengers, and the first officer doubling up as steward! “If it had been clear leaving Glasgow, we would have taken the scenic route a wee bit lower over the Sound of Mull…,” apologised the pilot. He made up for it by doing a circle of Barra before landing. Please enlarge to appreciate the light, etc. better. Captured freehand in the Blackhouse Museum at Arnol, Isle of Lewis. Smoke from the peat fire in the centre of the main room is caught in the light from the only window. Historic Scotland site The museum is well worth a visit to get insights of what life was like in this typical old stone house. The so-called blackhouses did not have a chimney but the peat smoke rose up through the thatched roof. This had the added advantage of keeping the roof from rotting or rain from coming through. This is my homage to the generations of islanders who lived in these houses. Addtional information from Ranald: “The tar from the peat smoke made everything inside black, hence the name. The beasts were often kept at one end of the house, where the floor sloped down. The heat rising off them kept the smoke away. A very clever system.” Nikon D1X, Nikon 18-70 F3.5-4.5G. Suisinish is an abandoned village reached after a rough hour- long walk from Kilbride, near Torrin, Isle of Skye. / This old cottage is too modern to have been one of the dwellings where the folk were evicted to make way for the sheep, which were more profitable to the greedy landowners of the time. Many of the families were separated, and forced to emigrate to America, Canada, and Australia. / I cannot begin to feel their anguish. / There are many ruins scattered around the Brae (hillside), evidence of a thriving, close-knit community torn apart by human greed. Maybe this bulding was built early in the twentieth century, I have no idea and can find no information. / Back to the present….. / There was quite a wait for some usable light, a chilly fierce wind was blowing, rain was brewing, nothing new ! We sat in the shelter of one of those deserted ruins, eating a cheese piece, ( sandwich ) and a cheering cup of hot coffee from the thermos, reflecting on how ‘they’ lived then, compared to us nowadays, and watching the sheep that are now the only inhabitants of this beautiful place. / Rowan trees were planted in the belief they kept evil spirits away, and it is considered very bad luck to cut one down, even today ! This cottage is surrounded by them, I guess the magic didn’t work. A three shot HDR. CanonEOS 40D mounted on tripod, iso 100, auto wb, f22, RAW files converted in Photomatix, and touched up in Adobe CS3. / A little Orton also applied to ‘pop’ the texture of the stone. / A slight vignette added. Kyleakin is the first village encountered on the Isle of Skye, when you cross over the bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh…....this is where the old Ferry boat used to land, which I don’t miss at all, romantic it might be, but darned inconvenient !! / The old ruin you can see behind the boats is Castle Moil…......a few facts for you….... “The 14th Century Castle Moil has had many names in its long history. Also known as Dun Akyn (Norse for Hakon’s Fort) and An Caisteal Maol in Gaelic, it is now a romantic ruin. Sited at the Skye end of the road bridge in the village of Kyleakin, the castle has Norse connections. Legend has it that a Norwegian princess, otherwise known as “Saucy Mary”, ordered a chain to be hung from the castle to the mainland so that no boat could pass without paying a tax.” / Nothing new under the sun then, eh ??!! LOL !! A three RAW HDR, shot on my Canon EOS 50D, polarising filter fitted, iso 100, f23, Auto WB, processed in Photomatix, then sprucing up in Adobe Photoshop CS3. / I used HDR because of the extreme light / shadow. MORE FROM MY ISLE OF SKYE SET…..
