A stunning design depicting a dark, tangled forest in deep midnight blues and greens, with a semi concealed red heart. The word EDWARD completes it. Such a beautiful t shirt to celebrate your Edward obsession! The forest could be Forks at twilight or dusk, when the vampires roam. EDWARD! Look at it on the black t shirts, it’s amazing!
I can fondly remember when Isabella was younger never wanting to leave my side. She would always hold my hand or want to be carried or ride piggy-back. As each year passed she would slowly take a few more steps ahead of me prior to running back, walking alongside me, and holding my hand again. Each year I would notice her number of steps increase. Each year I watched her grow up. Now that she is eight she will venture off a little ahead of me from time to time to explore on her own. She walks a greater distance now than she has ever before. As much as I want to hold her hand and walk or even carry her if I could, I love to watch her explore the world. She will frequently turn her head back and check on me. Making sure I am still right behind her. She is growing up and gaining more and more independence. However, if she cannot readily see me, fear will cross her face until she finds me, and then she relaxes and continues on her exploration. The old cliché stands true .. it is happening oh so fast .. where has the time gone? As her mother, I know this is all a part of growing up. For both of us. As her mother, I know I have done right by her as I watch her venture out trusting I am still with her. Part of loving her is letting her try things on her own. I see the distance between her steps and mine as she explores on her own as an example of the confidence and trust I have helped instill in her through the years. As much as I ache to spend every minute with her, I am filled with joy knowing I have allowed her the freedom to be herself and evolve into the Isabella she wishes to become. There must be a balance in motherhood. I must check that balance daily. I want to be her friend, her parent, her confidant, and a good example. However on the other side of the scale, I must also allow her to explore on her own and discover who she is as an individual. Who she wants to be, what her own interests are, what her personality will form into, how many steps ahead she feels she can take before she feels the need to turn around and see if I am still right behind her. If I am proud of anything I have done in my life, it is raising my daughter. All of the gifts of love and knowledge I wish to give her through her life, she unknowingly returns to me. Our relationship is in perfect balance.
Isabella has always been interested in the arts. Since birth she has loved music, art, dance, singing, and acting. She has taken lessons of all kinds. When she started showing interest in the piano I told her about the old player piano I used to pretend play as a child. I showed her on our piano how to play “Heart and Soul”. She wanted to take lessons. I signed her up. On this particular day the lesson was beginning to use both hands at the same time. All lessons up to this point had only been with one hand. You could feel the frustration rise in the room. Piano was no longer fun or easy. It was making children angry and frustrated. As a mother who was never supposed to have children, my natural instinct is to “make it all better” for my child. I wanted to somehow fix the situation so Isabella wouldn’t be frustrated. Shelter her and save her from this upsetting time. But I couldn’t. I love this child more than I can ever express in words. She was sitting right in front of me frustrated and I couldn’t do anything to help her. So I thought I would attempt to capture the moment and perhaps discuss it with her at a later time. I had my camera with me and decided to take her photo. As time passed she became better at playing piano with two hands. She also started writing her own music and songs and playing them to me. I was so proud of her and how far she’d come with her piano skills. A seven year old writing her own songs. Notes and all. Amazing. I pulled up the photo and showed it to her. I had never showed it to her before. She couldn’t believe she was that upset about something she now loved so much. She remarked, “But that’s life huh Mom?” I would not have learned as much without the people who took the time to stop, look at my work and encourage me. I know Isabella wouldn’t have the love for music she has today, had I sheltered her and not allowed her to experience frustration. One of life’s many lessons.
This is a very old photo of my daughter from 5 years ago that I keep folded up in my wallet. I scanned it to preserve it .. and I love how the creases and aging came through.
“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.” Albert Einstein / / My daughter Isabella at the edge of Sunset Cliffs looking out at the water. This is a shot from an expired roll of film. San Diego, CA

[Double Exposure Project #4 – Oregon and San Diego Exposed] This is one of the images produced through double exposing a roll of film with my amazingly talented, generous, and dear friend Matt Adamik. This is our fourth attempt at working with this process and I am in love with every image yet again. Matt lives in Oregon and I live in San Diego. He shot the roll first, mailed it to me, and I shot over top his photos. Neither of us knew what the other was shooting. The results are astounding and breathtaking. And fun! We will be collaborating on many more double exposure projects in the very near future. A wonderful way to bring Oregon and San Diego together, as well as the styles and friendships of two photographers. I am absolutely in love with this type of photography! I highly recommend it for everyone. Thank you Matt for everything! Goggles Down!
