Mid Afternoon Tired, Irrational Grumpy Little Boy

Occasionally….late in the afternoons Kane will suddenly have a grumpy irrational tired phase (as I know all parents will know about). Doesn’t matter what’s happening… what I’m doing for him… he finds a reason to suddenly be unhappy with whatever is going on (in a very cute, over dramatised, crocodile tears kind of way). Usually lasts about as long as it takes for him to lose interest or find something suddenly interesting elseswhere where suddenly the tears miraculously dry up quick as a flash and his demeanour snaps back to normalcy like the flip of a coin.. Irrational Fears When You're Seven Years Old

Growing up, my grandmother had a collection of dolls, but there was this one (pictured here) that gave me the creeps to no end…to this day, I can still remember giving it a wide berth whenever I saw it. It sat in a west-facing window so that when the sun set, the fading light would highlight it in such a way that it’s vapid, knowing little stare seemed to follow me when I walked past it. Its mouth was slightly open, so it always looked like it was about to talk. I’ve tried to capture that memory here, and it still gives me the shivers. Years later when I saw the “Talky Tina” rerun episode of Twilight Zone (if you’re a fan of TZ, you know what I’m talking about), it brought back that weird memory. Such are the irrational fears you have when you’re seven years old. Quick sketch/shading (~ 30 minutes). Non-creepy HB pencil on low-threat watercolor paper. :)

Irrational Fears Redux

So we come forward a few years (well, more than a few years). My in-laws’ house burned to the ground about five years ago in Upstate New York, and in the backyard, I find these discarded doll heads from older dolls that my mother-in-law had and I took them back home to California with me. It may sound morbid, but I needed something to remember the pain they went through during that time. You know how the saying about ‘bad things happening to good people’ goes. / Crazy that the scary doll thing would come back to greet me at such a inopportune time…. / 4B pencil on Arches 140 lb cold-pressed watercolor paper.
