THE SUBJECT: / The call was, “GATORADE!” and quick as a flash one of the young volunteers rushed out, bottle in hand and both she and the cyclist made a smooth transfer. / No.592 was one of the many entrants in the 2008 Panthers Ironman Triathlon. / After completing one lap then making it to the top of this hill where the refreshments were handed out, I’m sure a Gatorade fix was well in order. THE LOCATION: / At the top of William Street in Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia and was just into his 2nd lap of the cycling stage. THE MAKING of ‘Gatorade!’: / The day was dull, the light fluctuated from poor to poorer and while the exposure would be spot on for the contestants, the sky and very bright things were blown out. THE SUBJECT: / No.1244 was one of the many female participants in the 2008 Panthers Ironman Triathlon and was just into her 2nd lap of the cycling stage. / The title is a particular move in the game of Chess. THE LOCATION: / At the top of William Street in Port Macquarie , NSW, Australia. THE MAKING of ‘En Passant’: / The day was dull, the light fluctuated from poor to poorer and while the exposure would be spot on for the contestants, the sky and very bright things were blown out. THE SUBJECT: / It’s all happening here folks! The water bottle has been successfully transfered even before the empty red bottle settles on the road and in the background the kid volunteers are lined up ready to do their bit. / The cyclist has just made it to the top of the hill into the 2nd lap of the cycling stage of the 2008 Panthers Ironman Triathlon. THE MAKING of ‘Pass it On’: / The day was dull, the light fluctuated from poor to poorer and while the exposure would be spot on for the contestants, the sky and very bright things were blown out. Although thousands of athletes worldwide compete at an Ironman event each year, the vast majority aim simply to just finish the course if they are first timers, or set a PR (personal record) time if they’ve raced this distance before. The Ironman Triathlon is a grueling event that pushes its participants to the limits of endurance. I completed 3 but could not start my 4th due to injury. THE SUBJECT: / A hard working female competitor in the 2009 Ironman Australian Triathlon pumping her bicycle uphill is framed by the speedy blurred, arched of the body of a male competitor riding downhill. THE LOCATION: / Photographed from my vantage point in William Street, Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia, on a grey, wet, miserable autumn day. THE MAKING of ‘Ironman09 – One Each Way’: / With rather poor light, a camera that only opens up to f/4.9 at full zoom and renders digital noise problems at medium to high ISO settings and a hit ‘n’ miss panning technique) using Continuous Focus under those conditions, I was experimenting with Aperture, Shutter Speed, Focal Length and ISO for most of the day. / I was concentrating very hard on shooting the woman coming uphill when I heard some cheering on my right and that funny sound made by those shrouds they have on some of the bicycle wheels so I very quickly glanced uphill and saw the man heading down. I thought, “I wonder what would happen if…” and now we all know – a more artistic approach to the Ironman all due to a combination of panning and serendipity. / As this was a “one off” I doubt if it could be replicated without making a lot of shots. / Fuji S9600: RAW, Manual settings of f/11 @ 1/100sec, Continuous focus, ISO400, Panned. / Lightroom 1.1 & Photoshop CS3.
