Back from Antarctica with an Extreme Ironing Challenge Calendar

Hey there everybody I’m back from my amazing trip to Antarctica. And it was a wonderful and incredible as I thought it would be. In fact words really arn’t up to the task of expressing how it was and how I feel about where I’ve been and what I’ve seen. So I’m going to start to share my experiences with something a little light and fun. I went on this cruise as an Artist in Residence for Quark Expeditions and while I was onboard I got a bit carried away with the intensity of the experience and only way I could express that was through humor and irony….... So my first presentation to the Redbubble community in regard to my big adventure South is an: / / Extreme Ironing in Antarctica 2008 Calendar / / / / / / / / / / / / the individual images are avaiable to view in my portfolio at a larger size These images from the calendar can now be seen at the offical website for this international sport www.extremeironing.com (look in readers irons)

Yeeeeaaah….after a long day of chores, running around and my weekend cleaning…I began to log on to my favorite site…only to find, one of my newest works staring back at me…and let out a small yelp of joy…to myself! ;) / It’s strange almost to see my own work on the homepage…I always check out what works are featured; it’s a great way to find new artists to watch and I really enjoy the themes. So as I get bubblemail pouring in my inbox daily, I sometimes visit the group which the bubblemail is geared towards, and I got a surprise to see one of my pieces featured in the group for the bubblemail I just read! Born from the Pinky is featured in the Stillness Speaks group, yay! Big Thanks to Beth Lambert for featuring my image :) I just had to do this (again!). Well this time it’s not like there was a bunch of my work grouped together coincidentally, but I just thought it was ironic that the photo above mine was also a black and white photo of fingers :P.

"Mr. Frog's Belch" Design Rejected by Zazzle...
by Crockpot...then given an award for Today’s Best. / ...
...then given an award for Today’s Best. / / How friggin funny is THAT?! / / We submitted the design for a stamp, thinking it would be a funny thing to see on mail. Pure and simple unadulterated fun, right? Apparently not so! / / Here’s an excerpt of the rejection notice we received: / / The following Zazzle Custom Stamp could not be approved: / Product Title: Mr. Frog’s Belch / Product Type: Stamp / Product ID: 172719026690854964 / Contributor: crockpot / Result: Not Approved / Policy Violations: / Includes material that Zazzle believes would hurt its reputation. / May be considered violent, profane, deceptive, abusive, menacing, harmful, or threatening. / / My guess is that Zazzle thought the design might offend people. (Whatever.) But to give the standard, impersonal rejection that they did is a bit much. It’s an f’ing cartoon of a frog, for crying out loud!! / / “Includes material that Zazzle believes would hurt its reputation.” / Are you kidding me??? / They need NO help with hurting their rep. They already do a damn fine job of that on their own. Poorly printed products, printing products where the design is upside-down or inverted, sending out the WRONG products to customers, HORRIBLE customer service when it comes to resolving issues and “24-hour shipping” that takes 2 weeks (for a magnet!) are just a few of the things in Zazzle’s hallmark of reputation. / / And they’re worried about Mr. Frog burping. / / Mike and I have been laughing our asses off. This is just so hilarious and all too typical of Zazzle. / / OMG… I laugh so hard every time I read that. / / At any rate, I just HAD to share this with you all. I know that a lot of you fellow Zazzlers (and ex-Zazzlers) will get a huge kick out of this. >:) / / / / / /

Yesterday a group of photography-friends went South in search of locations to capture on binary-film. I shot a myriad of interesting shots, yet only a few I consider worthy of inclusion on Redbubble. Displayed below are my photographs of the rustic remains of the historic boat-sheds at Second Valley. , ,

Now that there’s a mosaic for clothing I had to do for that mosaic what I did for PAX. Turns out I’ve got one t-shirt in there (and, again, it’s the one I expected): / Tendrils This did involve extending (the now incorrectly named) getrbart so that it can optionally export a list of clothing. I’ll be releasing a new version of that a little later on (it’s now released). It’s also reminded me that I really should rework RBArtMan so that it too isn’t just about art but lets you work with clothing too. When I find some time I’ll have to see about sorting that out. I think it’s also about time that I added a clothing page to my RedBubble wrapper site.

Well I feel in a better frame of mind now….I think LOL, just had a rough day but not as rough as some maybe.who knows Got up early for sunrise, got talking to my friend and left it too late, could have kicked myself the sky was the most amazing reds, by the time I drove to the spot I wanted to use, the sunrise had finished. So tomorrow I must not get distracted. Went to a boat museum this morning , went for a walk along the canel path and snapped a couple of barges as they passed. Then in the afternoon I went for a boat ride along the River Dee in Chester, took some shots of the Iron Bridge and managed to snap some squirrels playing in a wild garden. When my friend picked me up she took me to Chester cathedral and wow what fantastic stone work it was amazing and beautiful so I took some snaps of that, omg have used up one of the memory cards already. LOL. anyway was a nice day but ….......other things…..... still in a better frame of mind now. Not sure where I am going tomorrow, so more great snaps to look forward too. Night bubblers / Sharon

I havn’t been here for a bit but I couldn’t resist sharing this … I saw a very interesting movie yesterday and maybe few noticed the message but my receptors were on. Iron Man is great and Stan Lee has a cameo in it. Talk about a glitzy flic …. WOW … beautiful effects of every kind. I WANT AN IRON MAN SUIT! Oh and I want Tony Starks Malibu Beach House too. I never saw so many effects and animation groups in the credtis. Fun movie to see with a great indictment of the Military-Industrial Complex in real Marvel Comics tradition. Simplistic with no punches pulled … good guy versus bad guy … David and Goliath kinda thing. But right at the peak of the final battle when all seems lost for our classically flawed and somewhat tormented hero … they manage to slip in a direct shot at the Orphan Works Act! It was then I finally saw the subtext of the entire movie … Uncrupulous leaches making money off the creations of a slightly warped, but truely creative and rather naive genius. On one level the entire story was about ownership of your creatations … including the dangers and responsibilities that come along with it. Bravo Iron Man, Marvel Comics, Paramount … and of course Stan Lee

Ooh, I feel v. good today. I’ve won First Prize for one of my photos at a local Agricultural Show. Iron Fence at Sunset was my choice for my first ever entry into one of these competitions. Thanks so much to those of you who viewed and gave comments on this work. Yay! :-))) And thanks to my partner, too, for his support. Gawd, I sound like I’ve just won an Academy Award but it’s really great to have this little boost. I laugh and skip with joy!!!! (This makes up for my computer breaking down last week, I tell ya!)

FINAL CHECK-UP TIME / Perhaps it is ironic that the very term – CHECK-UP, gives us a clue on how to go about getting this examination of our souls. Instead of seeing this nomenclature as a noun clause, should we not view it as an imperative predicate? Well, those are fancy words for urging a sense of directive; “Check UP”. / Whether we acknowledge it or not, there is an aspect of accountability in the cosmos. It is here that the final and complete “Check-UP” is accomplished. This examination is on the terms of soul fitness regardless of mental capacity and creative capability. To some, there is comfort and peace in this acknowledgement. Others, there may be doubt regarding this certainty; while others- there is a mood of trepidation. Where uncertainty or trepidation is concerned, one is no better than the other in the end result. How does one know in certainty and thus remove trepidation? That inquiry searched out with all sincerity; perhaps may lead you to rectification.

I came across Red Bubble quite by accident and yet it was just the thing I had been looking for. I’d been searching for a way to get some of my own designs on tees… I’d tried iron ons (never again!), screen printers (too expensive for a one off), and had just about given up. / I discovered other US based sites like this (which I wont name here) but didnt want to pay large amounts of shipping and have to wait 28 days to get what I wanted. / Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou… RedBubble! You are a life saver!

“Hey, baby,” Otto told a girl next to him. They were at a Velvet Underground concert in an Atlanta club. All she, Virginia, wanted to do was dance to “Rock and Roll,” but this freak was totally up in her grillz and ruined the song. / “They call me the Iron Man ‘cause my muscles are so big. The song was written for me. But you can call me Otto,” Otto said. / “You can’t call me.” / “Aw, come on, baby.” / “I hate guys with muscles. With all your triceps, there’s still one body part you’re missing,” Virginia said. / Otto’s face flushed. “What? Who told you?” / “I…meant a brain.” / “So what can I call you? I got the perfect nickname for you: Piglet. Because of your pigtails.” / “Yeah? I got one for you.” / “What? ‘Cutie’?” / “‘Queer’.” And with that, Virginia danced over to the bouncer. He spun Virginia in a circle, then she went to dance floor. Otto was intrigued. / “Hey, Piglet,” he said, next to her. / “Ew.” She moved away. He followed. / “Playing ‘hard to get’?” / “I’m not playing.” / “Aw, come on baby. You’re hot.” / “Sick! Do you expect me to change my mind just because you keep stalking me?” / “It’s not stalking, it’s admiring. I’m admiring your hotness. I think all women are hot.” / “Even Hilary Clinton?” / “Yup.” / “That’s an insult.” / “No it ain’t.” / “Well, at least you’re not gay,” Virginia said. She tried to escape. / “Hey, baby! Where you goin’? Is that a tattoo?” / ‘Iron Man’ gave up on Virginia when he was so drunk that the band appeared to be sinking into the floor. Kind of like what he felt like doing when he saw Virginia dancing with a guy whose glasses kept slipping off. Instead of figuratively sinking into the floor, Otto figuratively sunk in dignity and morality. He pushed the nerdy guy and began dancing with himself, next to Virginia. She left the club and Otto followed. / “What’re you doing?” Virginia screamed. “Who are you?” She took out of her pocket her ancient Spice Girls bubble gum she’d been saving for a situation like this, and threw it at Otto. Originally, the gum was so hard it pulled out Virginia’s last baby tooth, but after nine years of aging, the gum was like a steel toe, and it hit Otto’s mouth. His dentures fell out and Otto bent down to pick them up. Some skinheads surrounded Otto and the girls rubbed their mullets in his face. The guys pushed him. Virginia started walking, whistling calmly. / “Vergie! Tell Mom I’ll be home in an hour,” the bearded one said. Virginia nodded and walked to her motorcycle. / “An hour?” Otto said. / “Oh, yeah. And that’s just with me. My boys want to take you home, too.” / “I guess if I can’t have your sister, you’re the next best,” Otto said.

There is an interesting little story in 2 Kings 6:1-9 that demonstrates the power of God. (as recorded in The Message) One day the guild of prophets came to Elisha and said: “You can see that this place where we’re living under your leadership is getting cramped—-we have no elbow room. Give us permission to go down to the Jordan where each of us will get a log. We’ll build a roomier place.” Elisha said, “Go ahead.” One of them then said, “Please! Come along with us!” He said, “Certainly”. He went with them. They came to the Jordan and started chopping down trees. As one of them was felling a timber, the axhead flew off and sank in the river. “Oh, no, master!” he cried out. “And it was borrowed!”. The Holy Man (Elisha) said, “Where did it sink?” The man showed him the place. He cut off a branch and tossed it at the spot. The axhead floated up. “Grab it,” he said. The man reached out and took it. Well…in the first place, the honor of the guild of prophets was at stake because the axhead was borrowed. At that time an iron axhead was a costly tool, too expensive for the members of the guild to purchase. Having lost it, the borrower faced the prospect of having to work off the value as a bondservant. Secondly, the name of their God would also be compromised. Through his man, Elisha, God worked another of his wonderments and caused the iron to rise and swim! Isn’t that just like him? For things impossible with man are possible with God! In thinking about this biblical account of Elisha, I started to conjur up the ‘axheads’ in my life. We all share the same ‘irons’ at one time or another during the span of a lifetime…. _financial straits failing health broken relationships family problems greed discontent unforgiveness depravity_ Whatever the desperate case in our lives, if we stay faithful to our God, we will see his finger working marvels among his people. And, the iron shall swim!!
