  • I have been here and seen the coming of man to my rivers. In my shadows have walked wildlife that no longer walk here. From my lofty peaks you can see for many miles. Once I stood higher than the far western mountains. I may have shifted and changed but I remain. My rivers are cold and my forest cool. From my bowels man has both feed himself and built his shelters. He has raped my slopes for my wood. Fought wars within me. I still survive. Mist still shroud my valleys. Flowers still shine their beauty for all to see. Come walk my paths an fish my streams. Stand on my peaks and walk my valleys. Loose yourself within yourself as your cares fade away when your with me. I am the Great Smoky Mountains, the Great Iron Mountains, Far Blue Mountains, the Sha-cona-ga. Most just call me the Smokies, and I remain. And a quote from John Muir “The mountains, are fountains, not only of rivers and fertile soil, but of men

  • Sparks of hot molten steel are ejected as Weston-super-Mare’s blacksmith Nathan Bennett re-forms a freshly heated strip of iron. Nathan was happy for me to stand at a safe distance while I worked hard to click in synchrony with his hammer strikes. In the film era this would have been a much more expensive exercise, for sure! I’ve had lots of great feedback from this photo (in other places as well as on RedBubble) and I was pleased to give Nathan a RedBubble-laminated print as a thank-you gift. / . / A HUGE Thank You to the People At Work Group for featuring this photo in Sept/Oct 2009! / . /

  • Now sadly dismantled, B of the Bang was Britain’s tallest sculpture and was commissioned to mark the success of the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Located next to the City of Manchester Stadium, in Beswick, Manchester, the statue was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and unveiled by sprinter Linford Christie in 2005. It takes its name from a quotation of Christie in which he said that he started his races not merely at the ‘bang’ of the starting pistol, but at ‘The B of the Bang’

  • The Weight of Chains They don’t always clank, these chains. Not like in the ghost stories. / They don’t always warn you of the evil in the room. / Sometimes they whisper, lovers close by your ear, cupping your chin and promising fidelity. / Sometimes they chatter, chipmunks in the grass, warning of predators. / Sometimes they coax you to wear them, grifters at your feet, telling tales of riches. They weigh on you, these chains. / You think you wear none? / Do you believe? / Do you hope? / Do you love? / Do you dream? / Do you eat? / Do you sleep? / Do you hate? / Do you envy? / Are you human? / Then you are in chains. / Break free of all of them and you’re dead. / Some are better than others, though. / Chains of love can weigh light like the flutter of an eyelash. / Chains of hope can weigh so little they carry you to other worlds. But some chains will crush you before you can feel them. / Hate. / Prejudice. / Those chains have no mercy. And some weigh what you weigh. They are you, your body. You feel them only when you fight them. Weightless, then? / Only at peace. I didn’t plan to upload this today because I’m behind in visiting you guys and replying, and I don’t want anyone to think I’m being rude. But I need to get it off my computer before I panic and throw it out. It’s YELLING at me. Well, OK, not really. But it’s a visceral reaction I’m having. It’s making me want to tear apart my life and rebuild it in better ways. Wow. Anyway, it’s seven photo images and some digital painting, combined and edited in Photoshop Elements 3. /

  • The Man in the Iron Mask was written by Alexandre Dumas (père), the world famous French author, who also wrote the Three Musketeers. The novel has been adopted for film through many decades, and is just as exciting today as it was back in those swashbuckling days centuries past. • Rusting corrugated tank, corrugated iron shed, weathered timber, angles, lines….... texture paradise!! / I found this while passing through an odd little NSW country town which goes by the name of “Legume”. I’m not sure why it’s named so….. there wasn’t a legume in sight. [Thanks to Ghostbones for the great texture overlay] Featured – Metallic Junction – October 2009

  • Ah, DZ 015. There’s one I haven’t seen in many’s the long year. / No surprises there either, it was pulled in by a quirky set of DMA requests that happened by chance. Its been down there a long time, look at how filthy it is. It hasn’t been connected for ages judging by the damage and the muck in the I/O ports. / I can’t even remember the last time I used something that could connect to it, my equipment has been through at least ten updates since I used gear like this. But it is chained to something, could be nothing or it could be something scary, we’ll see in time. There’s no telling what it actually does til I get it raised and on land, I can’t see anything below the waterline without going down there, and I’m not doing that. / Now that I have it its time to open it and see what’s inside that I could use. While it was a bad day it was a period of rapid technological advancement and I may have forgotten something useful along the way. Here’s what happened, I overheard one of my housemates jilting someone down the phone. She was really nice about it but firm. It made me think “poor fella, this is Friday night, he was probably planning that all week.” And I remembered one time when I was young, inexperienced and on the receiving end of a jilting. Had a vision, commenced drawing, and here we are. The process I’ve tried to illustrate is mentioned here at one minute in and I’ll explain it like this; / Words as sounds come into the ear, are translated into sensory information and fed to the brain. The brain must then reference the signals with a concept it has already stored to derive the meaning. This is the memory retrieval phase. The sensory input is represented by the blender which breaks down the info into the reference numbers of the memories needed to construct and the relevant ones are pulled in by a programmable electromagnet. One concept can often pull in thirty or forty memories, here I only have five. Ever wondered what Britney would sound like if she used her powers for good instead of evil? / I’ve been listening to this dude a lot while I was creating this. He’s a fine upstanding young man from Israel who is advancing society quite nicely and we need more people like him. Inspiring stuff.
