I was asked to do a monochrome version of my “Iron ring”/”Crusty and rusty” images…. so here it is! / Paignton Pier, Devon
The effects of bringing iron and saltwater into close proximity. / One of the wrought iron sections on Paignton pier, Devon. / Image composed of three exposures and worked a little in HDR (Photomatix Pro), to bring out the colour of the rust.

Rabaul Harbour at the base of the Tuvurvur Volcano. The colouring is caused by iron oxide leaching from the rocks into the salt water. If anyone can describe this process more accurately or in more detail, please leave a comment on this page.
