  • Iridescent Cloud (or irisation, fragmented Solar Corona). Nikon F3, 300mm lens. ~2000sec/f22 in auto exp. mode, Fuji Velvia film. No filters. Scanned with Imacon Flextight, processed in Adobe PS. These colors are very close to what was seen visually with sunglasses and on the cameras ground glass with the prism removed for viewing safety, Waves of rippling color could be seen as the cloud moved in relation to the sun. Colors were much more ‘electric’ in intensity than can be replicated here or in print. / © Copyright Ern Mainka

  • When I created this fractal it reminded me of a flower but I could not work out which one… so I asked my father who is a macro flower photographer and he gave me the title. / Isopogons are natives that are usually circular and have appealing bits hanging off them. / / /

  • - Iridescent Altocumulus cloud about 2 hours after sunrise. When viewing this scene without the aid of sunglasses the cloud appeared a very bright white with only a faint hint of color. Only when it is dimmed considerably do the full range of colors become visible. For these images this was done by using camera exposure adjustment only. No filters were used. - My attention was first drawn to it an intriguing and rapidly changing mackeral cloud formation. - With the aperture preview button depressed on the camera I could see these rich colors through the viewfinder except that they were typically more vibrant and shimmering than can be shown here. - Cloud iridescence occurs when sunlight is diffracted by uniformly sized water droplets or ice crystals most commonly in mid level Altocumulus or high level Cirrocumulus. - Also see this image - And this image - Nikon F3, 35mm lens, Fuji Velvia film. 2000 sec at ~f16. No filters used. © Ern Mainka

  • string/acrylic/iridescent medium on wood

  • Stink Beetles is from an original painting by Karin Taylor. / The original painting won a prize at the Horizons Art Gallery in South Tweed Heads, Northern NSW and subsequently sold at same exhibition. / This was terrific fun to create…...in the end i added googly eyes that you can buy from the craft shop…..and they move around if you shake the painting… lol / there’s lashing of ink, pastel, acrylic and charcoal on this painting, layers and layers of fun and gigantic mess was created in the process…..but from the chaos out came these lovely luminescent beetles that my heart adores….ever since i was little, i have been fascinated with some aspects of nature, particularly beetles, lizards, flowers, cats, foxes, baby birds….i am but a dreamer :) of all these, stink beetles were perhaps my favourite, because of their magnificent shields of luminescent/iridescent colour glinting in the sun as they paraded up and down the tree trunks and either side of the leaves, fascinating creatures….....thought it an appropriate one for Easter Sunday…new life and all that~

  • Phew this one took awhile in the making, fresh Apples and Lemons (was all out of Oranges) dropped into crystal clear Water with a little magical lighting, then over to Photoshop to create the dramatic iridescent effect to Water which I was after to enhance it’s movement, Color, and contours against the Black background.

  • Sparkling iridescent light catches the crystal clear emerald water as I paddled in this pool beneath a lovely waterfall on a searing hot summers day… :)) (best viewed LARGE) oh and this one is not scotland by the way in case you’re wondering….

  • Iridescent cloud and aircraft. / Nikon F3, 300mm lens. Fuji Velvia. © Ern Mainka

  • Just a really heavy set of layering here trying to get the brightest and most luminous ‘glow’ I could from effects… it was hard work but fun anyway..;-) The flower ‘model’ is a Rose of Sharon blossom from my neighbor’s garden.

  • Abstract mixed aquamedia painting from my gemstones series on Arches 300 lb cold press paper.

  • Featured in Bee and Wasp Passions and in Bug Hunt Spring can be a time of amazing colors and contrasts. Recently I came across this scene with my macro lens. A wild rose (Rosa acicularis), with its amazing pink and yellow, hosts an iridescent green wasp (hymenoptera pteromalidae). The colors were amazing in “real life”, and captured perfectly by the Nikon D300 and Sigma 150 mm macro lens at the beach on Vancouver Island, Canada.

  • For once our hummer settled down and posed for me. This porvided me with a chance to capture her beautiful iridescent feathers a bit better. Now I am hoping that her mate will appear! Canon 40D / 400 mm IS Canon lens
