This evening, a pleasant surprise as I scanned the horizon with my long lens. / No processing necessary…
Do not go gentle into that good night [A Villanelle] Do not go gentle into that good night, / Old age should burn and rave at close of day; / Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, / Because their words had forked no lightning they / Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright / Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, / Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, / And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, / Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight / Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, / Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, / Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray. / Do not go gentle into that good night. / Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Dylan Thomas, 1951 or 1952

Sillouette of plant in strong sunset
Oils on canvas (sold). After visiting Doolin, I tried to remember the cliffs Cliffs of Moher in County clare) and painted this scene from my memory. Strong sunset, I know. This painting was done soon after we moved to Clare from Dublin and I think the memories of African sunsets were still strong in my mind. Nevertheless, I soon learned that these sunsets are not so unusual albeit more tinged with lilacs and purples. Wildlife, landscapes and Irish life paintings by Avril Brand Clare Art Blog
Featured in Dilapidated Buildings 25th November, 2008. This church in Doon, Ballybunion closed it’s doors to its congregation a few short years after the new, St John’s, church opened in the town centre on 1st August, 1897. The parish could not afford to keep two churches going. / Doon church is used these days as a storage building for farm equipment.

The Hill of Tara was the Coronation place of Irelands pre-Christian kings, and is one of Irelands more famous sites. This was not an hereditary Kingship, the kings either won it in battle or were chosen for it. Although no buildings survive there are a number of large earthworks still remaining on the hill, some are inside an even larger iron age enclosure known as a Hill Fort. In the middle of this enclosure are two linked ring forts, to the East is Cormacs House and to the West is The Royal Seat. / Rath of the Synods / North of the iron age enclosure is a 2,000 year old earthwork, / The Rath of the Synods, / which is built around an earlier burial mound known as the King’s Chair. This earthwork can be seen in the picture above, the largest mound on the right is the Mound of the Hostages. Further North is a long rectangular area with banks on either side, known as the Banqueting Hall it may have been used as such but is more likely to have been an entrance road to Tara. View On Black

It is a little know fact that the Jason and the Argonauts, those famous sailors of Greek mythology, once landed on the coast of Ireland. As they searched the world for the Golden Fleece, Jason was told by an unknown minstrel with a bit of a brogue, that Irish sheep are very easy to capture, being as the minute an oncoming car or truck appears on the horizon, said sheep promptly make themselves comfortable in the middle of the road. They refuse to move until shifted. Happy Days, thought Jason, if the Fleece is there, we’ll find it in no time; if not, we’ll be sure of a good Irish stew. / If you don’t believe me, look at this photo carefully. There is the mighty ship the Argo, bathing in the glow of an Irish sunset. The ship is from one of my own photos taken in Greece. It was cut out and merged with a sunset shot I took in Donegal. Levels and curves used to darken, and Orton effect applied.
