Oils on Canvas, Paul Robertson. 90×72 cms. I made this painting up almost entirely. The idea of the sublime, beauty and ecstasy. Is it not beautiful? Sure, yes. Shadows that are beautiful. I finished it on my 34th birthday. Marks and notches in time. For which I was given a PADDLING POOL from my best friend Jessica. AND she ALSO made a CHEESECAKE! / Wow. This piece came second in the international competition: The “Emotional Compass Art Award.” Technically “The 41st Annual Congress Art Awards” – for the – “Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.” The fact that this was a psychiatric convention sponsoring an art award is in actuality entirely incidental. There were pieces there with price tage over 50 grand. One or two were actually good. Well. One. In this instance the psychiatric context had nothing to do with my bipolar, nor was this connection even how I learned of the award. / This is not the first time the whorls and worlds in my work have crossed paths with psychiatry, and found response, reaction. Even cash. My last psychiatric nurse bought the piece “Stairwell I‿ as have other mental health professionals. Odd. / This is my first international award. It is a big deal for me.

I was quite wasted and on my way home in the early hours of the morning from a gig in the city when along the way, near my local train station, I saw a strange looking mass ahead of me which as it turned out, was an oddly shaped tree stump. In my inebriated state I decided to take a photo of it as I had a few shots left in my camera after the gig which I wanted to use up so I could get the film developed. I was amazed when I got the photos back and found this looking far more spectacularly weird than I remembered it and it remains my favourite photograph to this day… / This was taken using just a shitty old auto-focus camera with a built in flash, and has NOT been digitally enhanced in anyway other than some slight cropping around the edges when scanned

These are the flowers, here not yet blooming, that caused the feeling of Dorothy in the poppies fields outside Oz. It was intoxicating to the point of the absurd. The only saving grace was the ladybugs seemed to be as drunken by the smell as my guide. LOL! They were on every single bush, almost every single bloom, and they were all but unmoving. They weren’t stuck on them as I thought they were at first; they moved when they wanted to or when touched. But they were so locked on these bushes that they didn’t move unless they needed to, preferring to just stand in one place and…what? I don’t know what the heck they were doing. They weren’t pollinating anything and they weren’t clustered in the open blooms gathering necture. They just did NOTHING but stand there, presumably sniffing the same thing that made my nose wanna explode and my guide to want to lay down and stay there forever. LOL! By the way, these were the shiniest ladybugs I’ve ever seen. I guess the flowers did something nice to their wing covers. Who knows. :-D

Portrait of one of my best and dearest friends, the one, the only, the incredible Notron!!! We used to go to gigs and get really fucked up together quite often until he moved to the other end of the fucking country (if you read this, come back you bitch!!!) and had known each other since we were both young and innocent. Everybody should know someone as great as this guy… / The title came about after I got an old forgotten film developed and found a whole bunch of photos I had taken during one of our yearly pilgrimages to attend the Splendour In The Grass festival at Byron Bay where we meet up, take a shitload of drugs and witness some of the most awesome bands in existence…such as Mogwai. Spiderbait had been playing at the previous Splendour and I clearly remembered picking on poor old Notron for going to watch them because they are shit, so when I got the photos back and saw a pic of Norton with a big cheesy grin plastered across his face, quite possibly about to bare witness to the sheer horror that is otherwise known as a Spiderbait performance, I just couldnt help myself…I saw an opportunity to poke fun again and I jumped at it. Spiderbait had an album titled The Unfinished Galleon Of Some-Fucking-Lake-I-Cant-Remember (obviously not the actual title) so thats why the painting has such a stupid title…. / acrylic paints and inks and possibly some other stuff on A3 paper / 2004

Double vision refers to Diplopia, the perception of two images from a single object. Diplopia, commonly known as double vision, is the simultaneous perception of two images of a single object. These images may be displaced horizontally, vertically, or diagonally (i.e. both vertically and horizontally) in relation to each other. Drunkenness or inebriation is the state of being intoxicated by consumption of alcoholic beverages to a degree that mental and physical faculties are noticeably impaired and/or skewed. In the latter sense, the intention is often to insult or accuse someone in such a way that one’s words, taken literally, are innocent. The term sexual innuendo has acquired a specific meaning, namely that of a “risque” double entendre by playing on a possibly sexual interpretation of an otherwise innocent uttering.
