A personality quiz is a series of questions usually multiple-choice that intends to reveal something about the person who answers them. The personality quiz, unlike a knowledge quiz, has no definite set of right or wrong answers. Instead, the answers that the respondent provides are compiled and analyzed to produce a response that supposedly indicates part of the respondent’s personality and characteristics. The large number of personality quizzes seen online are a recent internet phenomenon. ( wikipedia.org)

Before I found RedBubble, my experience of artists was through art galleries. Many of these artists struggled with creating and maintaining an online portfolio. Let’s face it, if you are an artist, you want to make art – not learn how to build websites. Those artists were still able to market themselves and make sales. Many of them were early career and emerging artists just like you and me. The internet is a great tool for artists. Websites like RedBubble not only give you a platform to show your art, they also handle sales, production, customer service and shipping. Social networking sites and email lists let us tell lots of people about our art in a matter of minutes. And it’s usually very cheap or free. No wonder so many artists are now embracing the internet for marketing and promotion. But if artists are out there selling with no internet, what does that mean for more internet savy artists? We have websites, online stores, we promote our work via facebook, twitter and our email signature. We write a blog, we send out emails to friends and family. The more dedicated may solicit features on shopping sites, other people’s blogs and air time with podcasters. But is it enough? If there are artists making a living from their art without going near a computer, logic tells me that those of us who fail to embrace offline promotion are missing out. Get some of your work printed and hang it up in your home, at your office, and in your Mum’s lounge room If you design shirts, wear them when you go out. If you happen to know cool popular people who know how to name drop, give them a shirt and fill them in on how people can buy one Give friends and family a hard copy portfolio of your work with “how to buy” information at the back If you believe your work is good enough and you have the exhibition resumé to match, get your work into galleries When your parents / friends have a dinner party, offer to decorate their dining room with your art Print and use business cards when you meet new people (not your day job business cards) Anywhere your work is being shown, make sure your name and website and a non-online contact method is also on display Attend social events that relate to your work. If you take photos of animals, join the local wildlife society and go to their BBQ (bring the business cards) If you have an exhibition, send people an invite they can stick on their fridge Go to the exhibitions of other artists – stop looking at the walls and size up who is buying stuff If you have the opportunity to, participate in group shows or competitions at reputable galleries Be brazen, take a pile of your shirts on a quiet retail day and visit the shops in your area with an order form and a smile Remember businesses need art too – ask your friends to show your portfolio to their colleagues If you have an exhibition or event, ask people if they would like to join your mailing list Leave promotional material where your customers are likely to find it. Does that overpriced cafe down the road have a community board? When people ask what you do for a living, remember to say you are an artist. Or if that’s too hard say “I’m an artist in disguise as an accountant” When you design flyers, business cards and other promotional material, run it past a few people for honest feedback first Think of some more You’re probably noticing that many of these ideas mean you are going to the customer rather than asking the customer to come to you. Don’t make it harder than it has to be. take orders offline and get RedBubble to make and ship the order make sure promotional material includes the URL of your online store so people can purchase online if they like ask people to nominate post or email when joining mailing lists take advantage of offers like RedBubble’s free shipping when buying larger quantities for stock or an exhibition when people buy from you, offer to keep them informed of new works etc. by email These are by no means exhaustive lists, and almost every dot point there warrants it’s own article. Hopefully there is an idea or two for you to take away. If you have any ideas for future articles, or have a question, don’t hesitate to bubblemail me Jo
