Wow! So much to say, I just joined earlier today (or late last night for most of you :) ) and already I feel the community spirit that I had heard so much about. / I want to thank everyone who has made me feel so welcome here already, I live in Michigan in the United States and I wasn’t really sure how well it would work out with me joining your beautiful community, but you’ve shown me I had nothing at all to worry about. The art isn’t the only thing that is beautiful here. / I am really hoping that it won’t be very long before RedBubble goes international. I have no idea if any of mine would sell or not, but I’ve already found several that I would love to have on my walls. / There is so much incredible art of such a wide variety. A little bit of something for everyone. I have been a member and am still a member on several online photo sharing sites but rarely have I found one that offers this much. (now just to be able to put my photos up for sale hehe ) Anyway enough of my babbling for now. I just wanted to say hello and a big hearty thank you.

MUST READ – eBay international scam warning Well I got home yesterday only to find out an item that was sold on eBay, turns out it was part of an international scam. The story goes like this. A friend of my daughter has an eBay account where he sells things regularly. So he has an established seller rating and a Pay-Pal account already set up. So he offered to put a couple of items up for bid for me for a percentage of the money made. I decided to make Him a better offer. I told him I only wanted $300 for the item so anything above that would be split 3 ways. One third to my daughter one third to my daughter’s boyfriend and the final 33% to my daughters friend for posting the item and getting all the online stuff taken care of. This is where the story goes south. Turns out the guy who posted the item, got a buyer from Nigeria who wanted to buy the item for $500. So greed and stupidity set in. He thought this was great so he got the address for my daughter so she could box and mail out the items. Well the deal between the three of them was that my daughter would pay for shipping and that amount would be subtracted from the $200 then split three ways. It was going to be a nice little payday for such a minimal amount of effort. Well it cost my daughter about $80 to ship it internationally to Nigeria. AFTER the item had already shipped we found out the email he got from Pay-Pal was where the scam started. He got a threatening email from what he thought was Pay-Pal. It said if the item didn’t ship that day they were going to freeze his Pay-Pal account. Without his Pay-Pal account it would be difficult for him to sell his other items. The Pay-Pal email was a fake email. How did he find this out? He wondered why the money wasn’t in is account yet so on Friday he decided to call Pay-Pal. This is when we learned about the scam, they said they never sent the threatening email. So my daughter did a search online and found a blog where other eBay sellers had shipped items to the exact same address in Nigeria. Those people got the exact same threatening email from Pay-Pal. Everything about the scam looked exactly the same. Another huge lesson here, if it seems too good to be real then it just might be. Why am I telling you this? It’s just a warning to other eBay sellers out there, there is a well documented international scam going on. So be careful. I still get a lump in my throat over this one. You see I was going to buy a Tamron 90mm macro lens with that money. I found it online for $399 with free shipping. So close and yet so far looks like the lens has passed through my fingers again. Last time I was so close to getting it I dropped my iPhone and shattered the screen and had to buy a new one. It wasn’t covered by a warranty so I was out the money for a new phone. Someday I will get my lens just not today.

As a lot of you may have guessed by now, I am lucky enough to live about 20 minutes away from Avalon. Last night was a freezing 2 degrees and I ended up getting a slight chest cold over night, so this morning as I was just about to ride to Uni for my photography class, I started coughing, sniffling, sneezing and feeling like rubbish, had trouble breathing and basically not feeling great. I decided at the last minute that riding 10km to class on a frosty morning with a chest cold probably wasn’t going to end with smiles so I chose to go back to bed and spend the day keeping warm and relaxing. At around 1pm I was sitting at my laptop doing some research on a new camera I’m looking at purchasing for a project I’m working on, my girlfriend didn’t have to start work until 3 so she was sitting at the dining table sorting through the recent few days of junk mail that had piled up to about a foot high when she came across a letter addressed to me from the University of Tasmania where I study. I thought, oh crap I wonder how long that’s been there, knowing that letters from the Uni’s head office are always important and usually require a fast response. I opened it up not knowing what to expect, but suspecting they wanted more money from me for whatever reason. Well to my pleasant surprise it was a letter from the Vice-Chancellor of UTAS saying that I had been invited to join the International Honour Society for being rated in the top 15% of students at my uni (the academy of the arts). / I read the enclosed documents and found some of the members of the IHS include actor Bill Cosby, astronaut Roberta Bondar, former president Ronald W. Reagan, former swimmer Ian Thorpe and a heap of others. I knew I’d received some hi distinctions and a few other distinctions (mainly in photography and digital media) over my 4 years at uni but growing up I was always a C+ student, always tried hard but never good enough. In fact art was my worst subject. I remember thinking about it just a few nights ago in bed and feeling a bit depressed over it. I just wanted to come on here and share my little slice of happiness with my RedBubble friends. Even when I’ve felt absolutely lost and wondering if what I’m doing is of any value, to me or to anyone else, the RB community has always had my back and inspired me to keep going. To be a better person. A very nice surprise to make me feel warmer on this cold Tasmanian afternoon. – Cam http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Key_International_Honour_Society

I am proud to announce that I am the Co-Chairman and Co-Organizer / for The International Fine Art Society of San Diego. The International Fine Art Society – San Diego (IFAS-SD) is an organization / for all those who enjoy the Fine Arts and would like to share their experiences with others. We encourage artists, painters, photographers, sculptors, graphic designers, gallery owners, etc. to join and actively participate. However, it is important to note that you do not have to be art smart; you just have to be able to enjoy art, as well as to meet with others with the same interests. You also don’t have to be an artist, have artistic talent, or be affiliated with the art industry to join this group, just an appreciation of Fine Arts! The Mission of the IFAS-SD is to both encourage and support the creation of and appreciation of Fine Art with particular emphasis on painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. We do this through events such as Meet the Artist seminars, community art walks, art education and appreciation events, by attending gallery openings, touring museums, art discussion events and many other interesting and fun events. Please tell a friend about this group If you live near the San Diego area and love art, then check out The Fine Art Society – SD online and sign up to become a member. Yesterday I tagged along to the International Hairstylists Society...
Yesterday I tagged along to the International Hairstylists Society hair show which is one of the largest hair shows in the country. Having never been to one before, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but “complete and utter chaos” comes fairly close. Many of the stylists and models had been awake and preparing since 4am that morning for a 12pm show. Caffeine and sugary sweets were sustaining the tightly packed gymnasium sized hall. The fine line between sheer exhilaration and breaking into tears under the pressure was evident in the hallways and crouched in corners as entrants coached their models on posing and lay out hair pins before their event. For those of us who were spectators, our entry fee did not guarantee a seat, a view of the catwalk or even use of the toilets (good luck to you with 1000+ people wanting to do their make up! Lol.) But wow, that room had an energy to it you could set alight. Event after event, models were herded into their seats for judging then lead over to the catwalk for 10 seconds of glory followed by the arduous and sometimes painful task of unraveling their hairdos. Then they could go home, finally eat something and have a nanna nap. Towards the middle of the event, the crowd was urged into silence by the organisers. They killed the music and spent a full minute getting everyone to pay attention. Most of us thought something serious had happened, but it was just so the organisers could tell everyone off for leaving rubbish in the hallways and bathrooms and to let us know they didn’t want to pay for cleaners afterwards! Despite the rushed, stressed, and relentless pace of the day, there were some real highlights – the talent. I discovered stylists and colourists that deserve to have their work in the national gallery. This was true art. Moving, inventive and ingenious. Team spirit was evident in the many helpers and friends who had come along to support the entrants. The hair models had not only volunteered their time, but also their beautiful hair with dramatic chops and colour changes commonplace. The runway was littered with loaned designer clothing from local labels. It was this amazing sense of working together that made the day, despite it’s hardships, so memorable and positive. Would I do it again? Hell yes. But with a packed lunch and empty bladder!

FINALLY!!!!! I promise, this is not just another tease! We were so close to releasing the book to the general public at the beginning of April, then found out we could donate the proceeds to Madre after all, which meant a bit more administration work before the book could be set free to fly into your hands. A lot of love, a lot of work, and a lot of lovely ladies make this book a true slice of awesome! Now all the work is done, and the book is available for you to drool over, so get your clammy hands on a copy now! And for a double-shot of awesome, the first collection She Took Her Own Picture is still available through the FSPASG account on Blurb. You can find it through the above link. In Her Own Image features work from 87 artists. You can see their names, and work via links on my blog coughcheaperinpoundscough

OMFG – even more excited now (and I promise no more journals from me I only entered 3 images…lol) A score of 96 and a really weird comment from the judges this time… Judges Feedback Great photo, wrong forum – The judge thought this was a pretty good photograph of its type, but there are lots of photos like this in the world and, basically, they are looking for something different! Of course, being different alone doesn’t make it better, but it helps to get noticed. I entered it in the People & Portrait section – not sure where else I should have entered it so I’m a little perplexed with the comment..But it still got Platinum ;0)
