  • A very evil and angry new Dragon entered the bay today. Scattering all boat traffic causing the island villagers to seek shelter. Seeming to take a liking to the long abandoned lighthouse, one can only wonder if its presence is permanent. The Cockspur Lighthouse. / Cockspur Island, Georgia, USA

  • One morning in our hotel room in Shimoda, my wife went hunting for green tea in the fridge. I noticed her shadow cast against the shoji and asked her to pose. I love shoji for their ability to create privacy whilst giving the illusion of space through light..

  • How can dead eyes be so powerful? My first instinct was to frame the whole face, but I’m glad I went in close for a second pass. Don’t shoot till you see the white of their eyes. [Grafitti at Lovells Wharf in London]

  • A close up of one of the few remaining original buildings in the Smithfields area. I dread to think what a Tripe Dresser does, but his door was quite photogenic!

  • Too sad for apostrophes today… Graffiti near Lovell’s Wharf in Greenwich.

  • Near my old home, in Hanno, is Arima dam. Looking west on a winter afternoon, the mist and interlocking valleys entranced me… It wasn’t until later that I recognized Fuji-san nestling in the mist…

  • In the main hall of the Barbican Centre, the ceiling is inset with dozens of light blocks. I deliberately under exposed this shot, intensified the colour with 2 different pull-throughs, and cropped it wide for a futuristic effect.

  • At Barbican, residential, commercial, and civic buildings compete for attention. Each trying to be more bleak than the rest..

  • Layer upon layer of bill-posters torn down from the walls of Bounds Green station.. Leaving a barely legible few letters intact.

  • Originally a colour shot of West India Quay DLR junction with lots of underside detail, I cranked up the contrast and went for graphic shape & form instead.

  • A different crane/different view this time. Still in the Docklands. Blasted with lots of late afternoon light this shot was naturally contrasty. All I did was boost the saturation a touch, for a little body. No recolouring here..!

  • Sea Freight Containers stacked at a recycling plant in the Docklands. Cropped in just a little to simplify the composition. I didn’t notice till afterwards that exposing for the sunlit containers had rendered the shadowed rope coil blue.. just enough to offset the rusty yellows. Amen to ‘happy accidents’..

  • Another very lucky hana-bi grab at Ito. I found pushing the shutter about 1sec before I thought the hana-bi would explode to be the best technique – don’t bother tracking it, just shoot wide and then crop! This shot must have been milliseconds after detonation, and is my favourite of all my efforts. Makes me imagine the birth of a universe..

  • I shot about 60 frames of this wonderful old pumping tower at the dam end of Sayamako in Japan. Hand held, but I think I got it..

  • I imagine this shutter door was once navy blue, but time and the elements have taken their toll.

  • Beautiful New Mexico Valley

  • Spectacular view of NM
