RedBubble – Taking it to the next level? Why are we here? a) A platform in which to exhibit our artwork / b) A place to admire and be inspired by the work of others. / c) Ultimately we would all like to sell our work. I am very pleased to note that lately the Bubble is also becoming a social network. I wait for the comments from such as Meach ready to fall off my chair with laughter. But unlike Facebook (“See you down the pub at 9pm M8T”) the Bubble has PURPOSE!! / And the purpose is for the production of BEST WORK. There are those out there who love art and buy it for that reason. But there must be billions out there who think art is something you have to take out a second mortgage in order to purchase. And yet here we are offering for sale reasonably priced original and brilliant artwork. Red Bubble and in my own modest way are promoting the works. You recall I made the suggestion a while back that my fellow moderators should do some promotion work specific to their own groups. I was a bit sad to note that quite a few rejected my journal suggestion to their group. Hope they took it on board anyway. There has been a lot of hot air expelled recently about reply buttons, taking offence and unpleasant criticisms. In a way this is good because it brings peeps out of the woodwork to discuss. Which brings me to my point (at last!)…… It seems to me that in order to sell to the masses we really do need follow the overiding purpose of the Bubble and display only BEST WORK. / To this end I would like to make the following suggestion regarding the use comments box. Superb, wonderful and stunning are fine where appropriate but let’s take it a stage further; help others to achieve the Best Artwork. Perhaps an example would be – some months ago I spotted a seascape where the horizon was sloping downhill. I bravely asked if this was ‘meant’ and if not using my limited experience of photoshop I explained how to level it up. A few days ago I spotted another thing that could improve an artwork but wasn’t brave enough to place it in comments and sent a bubblemail instead. I was relieved to note that both comments were gratefully received Occasionally there is a dull photo that is good as a concept but would benefit 100% just with the addition of a drop of ‘contrast’. Two things then. BE BRAVE and use the comment box to help that person (and others) to technically to improve their artwork. And two – all of us should write the following on a post-it and stick it on our monitors, “I will not take offence if someone suggests an improvement to my work”. I am not suggesting that one should suggest conceptual improvements but comments like ‘why not re-shoot from a different angle’ or ‘crop it so the object is filling the frame much more’, are acceptable. In other words stick to technical comments. / Peeps offering comments like “That picture is cr*p” should be banned from the site I reckon. Let’s all of us get super-interactive. Use the comment box to boost the standard of our artwork so as the masses start to log-on big time they are presented with Best Work. / Over all remember the words next to the comments button – PLESE PLAY NICE. As a final thought to moderators – I will be seeking ways of splitting the Watersports and Activities group artwork into sub-groups i.e. Sailing, rowing, surfing, underwater, etc etc so that when a punter or advertising agency comes on line it will narrow their search. If anyone can help me with that I won’t be offended – honest. LOL LOVE & PEACE / & “ALRIGHT THEN MY BIRDS, MY HANSOMES!!!!! ‘avin a good day do ‘ee”. P.S. That’s A Proper Cornish greeting hence no question mark at the end of the greets. The second one responds with “yes” or “Alright Boy” or “maid”. Honestly, how can anyone take offence at being called ‘Hun’ – We are in a global Village now. Everyone has a different up-bringing / social education / way of being. Andy / Moderator / Watersports & Activities Group.

No worry: I shall not give a diary of the development of your granddaughter here. After all this is not really the place to do so. So it may be enough to tell you today that we saw her again yesterday, going “baby-sitting” for the first time so that her parents could go out together and enjoy the afternoon sun in a near-bye park. The little one is not yet allowed outside, due to her being born too early. To our great joy she is clearly doing well. The main purpose of this journal is a vote of thanks. I am overwhelmed by all the many reactions from your side. So many congratulations, often so nicely put. I have experienced this as a wonderful wave of warmth and well-wishing which did enhance our happiness all the more. So this gallery which of course is directed to our photographic work, became a touching source of human interaction! Ever so many thanks for it, dear friends.

I’ve been off the air in more ways than one all this week, unfortunately. I really hurt my back on Monday, and have been literally horizontal till today, in a fog of strong medication, able to sit for just a few moments at the computer (doing the work I absolutely had to do), had to bail out of a work trip to Darwin yesterday, where I was meant to be co-chairing a big meeting, and also missed out on a special plane trip over to Tiwi Island … bugger! So … I’ve made very few comments on anybody else’s new work, tried very hard to acknowledge comments on my work, but other than that, no interaction at all. Sorry to all my friends with whom I usually have very active exchanges – it’s not that I don’t still love you, it’s just that sitting involved crying and REALLY STRONG LANGUAGE!!! Back soon :)

As a child growing up on the suburban fringe of Melbourne, trips to the city were especially exciting. After coming back home after many years elsewhere, I still experience a tingle of excitement in the hub of the urban environment. There’s now a group that encompasses this. http://www.redbubble.com/groups/urban-environment Grime. The City. Beautiful and Elegant. Abandoned and Broke. The People Within. / The Urban Environment is the playground in which so many interactions occur. Where bridges are made, broken and crossed. When we stop to pause, we notice a richness and a multiplicity of complex layers, each with its own uniqueness. This is the place to post interpretations of the city, and the interaction of the human with it. This can include urban landscapes or fragments, places, people interacting with the environment, or each other. The urban context is important, and artists are encouraged to include pieces with a sense of atmosphere and purpose. Accompanying descriptions may help convey this in a broader sense.

I love this whole RedBubble experience so much ! It has so much more going for it than I could have ever imagined. I love Art in the extreme – viewing art, making art, talking about art, and connecting and interacting with other Artists. Plus talking about anything else at all that we find interesting ! There are so many awesome individuals that frequent RedBubble – we may not have met in the real world, but in the realm of consciousness we have met. That interaction is priceless in my mind. If you would like to talk about all those things above, please read on. My Personal e-mail addresses = malcomsonj@hotmail.com OR reflector@live.com / OR infodigcells@aapt.net.au These are my main Web Addresses ( Out of about 7 that I have – some other ones are just links only ) . You can choose any method if you want to communicate in a more Digital Multimedia way with me. I will always send a reply: “Digital Cells – my Digital Multimedia Art and Design Portfolio” URL / All Digital Multimedia outputs, except 3D. It has not been updated for the last month, because I have been concentrating on RB. Updates to Digital Cells will be made in the next few weeks. “National Association for the Visual Arts ( Australia )” URL / My Artists Profile, inspirations / influences, and bits and pieces. “Reflectors MSN Live Space” URL / Very new – still needs a lot of work when I get the time to spare. / Just one good RB friend now, more to come soon I hope ! That’s all I can remember right now. Cheers ! I would really enjoy the communication, even more than I do on RedBubble, and that’s saying something ! James

Cultural Interaction and the Museum by: msleeds

Cultural Interaction and the Museum As I look for insight about myself, my culture, and how they relate to each other, I have turned to Art History and the museum. / The notion ” that museums hold the stored material culture of the past,” is intriguing. / According to Leeds,(thats me), Art is a reflection of a culture at a specific point in time. Art History is being the recorded part. / If according to Pearce,(author of school Art History book), and Leeds these postulates hold true, then it would be probable that a great place to look for the answer of how we got to this time and place would be a museum. / I also learned by a field trip, that a museum has different faces. The museum I visited, Orange County Museum, was not what I expected. It was an Art Museum but not one that depicted past years of human endeavors. The exhibits were on the cutting edge with futuristic thought and folly. Maybe we are getting a glimpse of the future currents or maybe we are getting to see someone’s washed out wave. In either event, it proves that not all museum faces are the same. It does bring to mind the questions of who chooses exhibits that are to be seen and what is the purpose or intent of the person(s) that makes these choices? / “Power relations within museums and galleries are skewed towards the collecting subject who makes decisions in relation to space, time, and visibility; in other words as to what may be viewed, how it should be seen, and when this is possible.” / According to Leeds, in a frivolous effort to be noticed, man compares himself to what he thinks is great work, thus mingling and promoting himself. If he is the only authoritative figure at this time, it’s a good chance he will get away with it, for history marches on and all we will have to compare of his time is what he has written. “Knowledge is now well understood as the commodity that museums offer.” / “Discover how one man’s vision can change the way you look at the world.” / ” Museums and galleries can alter perception and can contribute to knowledge.” According to Leeds, value judgements are made using a value system that may compliment the choice and give it relative justification. A warning note should be put here because we all have different value systems. Hopefully we are making the right choice but as we saw with September 11 plane crashes, other value systems are in place. So, what to believe? Which museum to visit? What exactly is a relative culture? Am I the sum of all the previous cultures that existed before me, or am I the sum total of just the cultures that intermingled, clashed, burned, and rebuilt from a given hemisphere? Can I draw strength from the past? Is it true that one picture is worth a thousand words? Will the past cultures show us signs of where we are going or are we destined to continually repeat our mistakes? / / Will world tech drive us to ruin or become our savior? Will we have enough time to work it out or will we destroy ourselves unconditionally? / / Cultural Interaction is never as important as it is now. Our lives and the future of our sons and daughters depend on this island in the sky’s melting pot mixing properly, without boiling over, and creating higher value for life, as we know it.
