in the little town i live in, townsend tn., we have this old timers bluegrass festival. / you will see people of all ages young and old, enjoying bluegrass and gospel music. you can see what the ” old days” were like with old tractors, old single engines running homemade ice cream machines, balers, all sorts of mechanical apperatis. / one of the things i love about the festival is how each little band forms their own circle, and just plays to whomever wants to stand around and listen. / there are fiddles, violins, cellos, basses, banjos, all sorts of musical instruments. / this one guy had what looks to be a guitar turned right side up, and picking it. / so something just said..shoot it..and i did :)
This was my dad’s guitar, he bought it in 1974, he passed it down to me when I was 15 and learning to play. Now the guitar belongs to my little brother, since I don’t play anymore.. / I uploaded this photo for a selective coloring “red” challenge. *All proceeds of sales are donated to the Hope Animal Shelter Please check out my other gallery here at RedBubble, Macabrecat , for my cat photography. I purchased this violin back in 96’, as i was reading the book The Artist’s Way by: Julia Cameron. Looking for my ‘inner artist’. well, i think i found it. Although . . .it never came through the strings of the violin, more through the lens of my camera. When i did play (and i played often) . . it was more noise and scratching rather than music . . my biggest fans were my 2 cats that sat endlessly at my feet and tilted their heads in sync to the ‘noise’. Perhaps it was music to their ears . . or just them amusing me! Anyway – i still have the violin, but get something other than music from it, I got this series!
Scott Kelby’s Second Annual Worldwide Photo Walk / Old Port, Montreal Quebec, CANADA / Saturday July 18th 2009 8:30 to 10:30 AM / It was a very wet and rainy morning. / Nikon D40, Nikkor VR 55-200mm lens / Taken inside the garden courtyard of a restaurant. / The Jazz combo was taking a break! / “Double basses are constructed from several types of wood, including maple for the back, spruce for the top, and ebony for the fingerboard. It is uncertain whether the instrument is a descendant of the viola da gamba or from the violin, but it is traditionally aligned with the violin family. While the double bass is nearly identical in construction to the other violin family instruments, it also has features which derive from the viols. Like many other string instruments, the double bass is played either with a bow (arco) or by plucking the strings (Pizz). In orchestral repertoire and tango music, both bowing and plucking styles are used. In jazz music, the bass is mostly plucked, except for some solos (and also occasional written parts in modern jazz) which are performed with the bow. In most other genres, such as blues and rockabilly, the bass is plucked.” / ~Wikipedia Softly As In A Morning Sunrise/Christian McBride
Despite it’s sensuous appearance, the easy curves, the mellow tinted veneer . . . the cello is a hard, shrewd and unforgiving instrument designed by a master demon, hell bent on torturing the unsuspecting would-be musician . . . well that’s my take on it . . . which may be coloured by the fact I have an exam tomorrow where I expect to make a very nice fool of myself for ever contemplating reproducing Murray Gold’s cello for “The Impossible Planet”! (music from Doctor Who) Of course I will not be attempting Gold’s arrangements in the exam . . . I will instead be making a hash of: “Twinkle Twinkle”, Dvorak’s “Largo” (my deepest apologies to Mr Dvorak) and “The Centipede”. /

I was in Florence,Oregon at their Saturday market and notice a luthier stand. I’ve never seen violins on display like this before. They are such gorgeous instruments to photograph. I almost bought one just for the pleasure of being able to photograph it.
