Watercolor on Board / We form a living bridge of time, connecting the previous century with the upcoming on, and are becoming the elders. Leave on this century’s shore any tattered, faded clothing sewn of worn out cares and sadness’, brittle anger, and festering resentment. Drape yourself in a flowing garment of new life, all gossamer dreams and flowing, tranquil thoughts. The stuff of star and comet exists at the center of every cell in your body. The blood flowing through your veins is remarkably similar to ocean water. We are spiritual beings who have forgotten our origins. Reclaim your birthright. / Text copyright Helena Nelson – Reed

This painting depicts beloved Brighid, Celtic goddess and saint, who walks the land, on the eve of Imbolc, February 1st. Its still bitterly cold but the light has returned, and the people know spring is on its way. Ewes are dropping their lambs, and soon the boring diet of old root vegetables will be enhanced with the addition of dairy products, and farmers begin preparing the fields. On Imbolc Brighid walked the countryside, passing through the communities along her way. Outside their doors people left offerings of milk, cloth, and food for her to partake of and bless. Brigit’s crosses (originally symbolizing the four elements and four directions, but later given Christian significance) and corn dollies were made, and local rituals followed. Every community had its own manner of celebrating. Goddess Brighid was associated with blacksmiths, poetry, fertility, fire, milk, sheep, white cattle, boars and swans, but most of all she had the mother goddess’s compassion. Here Ive portrayed her hair of flame and gown flowing in the bitter winter winds. She walks a remote field, blessing it for the coming season. The tree of life grows in this field, symbolizing spring and the new life that will soon be abundant. Text and image copyright Helena Nelson – Reed. Please don’t use without written permission.

My new wolf friend seemed to like having his pictures taken – he stared “up close and personal” right into the lens. I believe it is only fitting to donate the proceeds of the sale of this image to a park that more than 200 wolves call home! :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Algonquin Park

“No Muse-poet grows conscious of the Muse except by experience of a woman in whom the Goddess is to some degree resident…. but the real, perpetually obsessed Muse-poet distinguishes between the Goddess as manifest in the supreme power, glory, wisdom and love of woman, and the individual woman whom the Goddess may make her instrument…” / (Robert Graves)

I thought I’d found a reason to live / Just like before when I was a child / Only to find that dreams made of sand / Would just fall apart and slip through my hands / But the spirit of life keeps us strong / And the spirit of life is the will to carry on / Adversity what have I done to you / To cause this reclusive silence / That has come between me and you / And the spirit of life oh-ho remains in light / And the spirit of life oh-ho remains inside / I never thought it would be quite like this / Living outside of mutual bliss / But as long as the veins in our arms still stand up / The spirit of life will keep living on / ‘dead can dance’

The bridge reminds me of an emotion of solitude, which is not to be confused with loneliness. The former leads to an internal peace and being one with nature and oneself while the latter was a feeling of being forced to be alone, deprived of freedom and choice. I used to call this photo “Peaceful Bridge” until a young patient of mine (at the time she was nine years old) explored the difference between solitude and loneliness. When the image was presented to him as an illustration, he exclaimed, “Oh, solitude is peace, inner peace!” And the true title of the piece was born. This calendar focuses on the realms of spirit. The images are inspired by people I’ve met and their stories, the land I walk almost daily, and personal experience all woven into a mythical context. Spiritual truth, myth and fairielore are powerful wisdom teachings and not dusty, quaint remnants of an earlier golden period. My art speaks for nobody but myself, but I hope you’ll enjoy and relate to some of these paintings. The act of creation is what I most enjoy, more than the result. While I have text about the background of each piece, I ask that viewers assign a personal interpretation to them. Soul – speak is beyond gender, race and culture. The color, imagery and energy will speak to some and not to others but whatever your background, take them in the best way possible. Blessed Be, / Helena

The future of African predators is in peril. It is estimated that only 10,000-15,000 free-roaming African lions remain, down from 50,000 a decade ago. African lions are now listed as Endangered (West African subspecies) and Vulnerable (East and Southern African subspecies) by the World Conservation Union and are on Appendix II of the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) list. African lions are in danger of disappearing altogether due to disease (FIV, bovine tuberculosis, canine distemper) and habitat encroachment. Today’s modern world subjects lions and other wildlife to many dangers. Mankind constantly seizes more and more of the remaining wild areas of Africa, forcing lions onto smaller and smaller parcels of land. Large-scale developments destroy the lion’s natural habitat. In areas inhabited by livestock, lions are frequently shot, snared or poisoned. And sadly, the hunting of these amazing animals for “sport,” for man’s pleasure, is still encouraged as a revenue producing industry by many African governments. African predators simply will not survive unless they are protected. 100% of proceeds from any sales of this image will be donated to the Virginia Zoo

The doe took a little time off from busy eating for the photo opportunity, although she didn’t want to give up the tasty colorful leaf. By now everyone who has ever seen my work knows that I’m absolutely “addicted” to develop a deep relationship and establish an intimate communication with mule deer (we don’t have a lot of white-tailed deer around here). Everyday I go out there in the early mornings, hoping to have a close encounter! :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada

This work is dedicated to the greatest race horse who ever lived (in my opinion). I would have loved to have had the pleasure of knowing Phar Lap. After I learned of this magnificent horse with his indomitable spirit, I fell in love with him. His story has intrigued me ever since I learned about him. He overcame all the odds against him and became the greatest racehorse in modern history. He was so unconquerable that the slugs who controlled the tracks insisted on adding lead weights to him to level the playing field. He could not be beat. They continued to weigh him down and still he won. When his owner brought him to America to race at Aqua Calienti in Mexico, he won as usual. But, as the legend goes and later evidence leads to strong conclusions that the syndicate wanted him out of the races because they could not win any money on him due to the track odds, poisoned him after his last race. I like to think that the power of his spirit still energizes the tracks where he stood out as a star whenever he ran a race. Phar Lap, a giant chestnut thoroughbred gelding, is considered by many to be Australia’s and New Zealand’s greatest racehorse, and is a much loved national icon in both countries. At the time of his death in 1932, Phar Lap was the third highest stake-winner in the world. At the height of his powers, bookmakers offered very short odds on him, even refusing to accept any bets on some races. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Pharlap, regarded by many as the best racehorse of all time, was bred in New Zealand and raced primarily in Australia. Decades after his death, Phar Lap remains Australia’s most famous racehorse: an ungainly chestnut gelding whose great stamina helped him win 37 of his 51 races between 1929 and 1932. Phar Lap was born in New Zealand and purchased for the bargain price of 160 pounds by trainer Harry Telford and American owner Dale Davis in 1927. The horse repaid them by winning over 66,000 pounds in purse money during his career. Phar Lap was the favorite in the prestigious Melbourne Cup race three times, winning in 1930 and becoming a national hero in the process. After the 1931 Cup he was shipped to America to face new competition for bigger stakes. He won his first race, at Agua Calienti in Mexico, but never raced again: in April of 1932 he died suddenly at a ranch in California. Phar Lap MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)—Forensic scientists say champion Australian gelding Phar Lap died of arsenic poisoning, solving a mystery that has intrigued the horse racing world for more than 75 years. Phar Lap won 37 of his 51 starts before his death in mysterious circumstances at Menlo Park in California in April 1932. Days before his death, he won Mexico’s Agua Caliente Handicap, which was then the richest horse race in North America. Arsenic poisoning has long been suspected as the cause of Phar Lap’s death, but confirmation had been lacking until Thursday when researchers Dr. Ivan Kempson of the University of South Australia and Dermot Henry, manager of Natural Science Collections at Museum Victoria, released the findings of their forensic investigation. The underlying law of Creation is RHYTHMIC BALANCED INTERCHANGE in all transactions in Nature. It is the one principle upon which the continuity of the universe depends. Likewise, it is the one principle upon which the continuity of man’s transactions, his health and happiness depend. It is the manifestation of God’s two opposing desires in all processes of creation….Balance is the principle of unity, of oneness. In it is the stability, which lies in CAUSE. Balance is the foundation of the universe…..by Walter Russell / Please View In Large format! / Origninal Image / / ___ / All The Materials Contained May Not Be Reproduced, Copied, Edited, Published, Transmitted Or Uploaded In Any Way Without My Permission. Mindscape is a mental or psychological scene or area of the imagination. The word is most suitable to the filed of psychology. Mindscape has two words combined in such a way that the meaning goes beyond it – Mind and Escape… It can be translated as a Mind that wants to escape or a Mind that is in route of escaping. This adventure can be in the sense of reality or in spiritual world. / Depression sufferers escape from facts, hallucinates escape from reality, psychotics and neurotics escape from many other forms of life. We usually state that they are people who require help so that they can live an ordinary life. But who is to decide what is normal and what is abnormal? If ones can see the other side of horizon, according to them they deem the facts strongly that they hold about life, oneself and reality. They believe they are the right ones who are amongst wrong people. Are you one of them? I tend to assume we all are, one way or another. My dog River posing for a portrait in the snow. She has ALWAYS liked her picture being taken since she barely opened her eyes at two weeks of age. Her litter mates ran around when the camera aimed at them but she stood in attention every time a photo opportunity showed up! :) I’m sure she’d be glad that I donate the proceed of the sale of her photos to Nature Canada as she loves woods and her deer friends as much as I do! :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada.

My new wolf friend was determined to teach me how to howl after our shared lunch. He very “tenderly” took half of my sandwich from my offering hand with his mouth, lay it down on the ground and ate it layer by layer, slowly and savoringly, unlike my dog River, who would ALWAYS “wolf down” whatever is offered to her! :) So now he set out, just a few feet away, raised one front leg a tiny bit for emphasis and howled. I got down on all fours, copied the posture and did the same. Obviously he was a little dissatisfied with my learning so he repeated the whole thing another time. And this time he was happy with his pupil. What a patient teacher I had! :) Donation to charity / 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this image will be donated to Nature Canada
