The Redback spider (Latrodectus hasseltii) is a potentially dangerous spider native to Australia. It resembles a Black widow spider. It is a member of the genus Latrodectus or the widow family of spiders, which are found throughout the world. The female is easily recognisable by its black body with prominent red stripe on its abdomen. Females have a body length of about a centimetre while the male is smaller, being only 3 to 4 millimetres long. The Redback spider is one of few animals which display sexual cannibalism while mating. Redbacks are considered one of the most dangerous spiders in Australia. The Redback spider has a neurotoxic venom which is toxic to humans with bites causing severe pain. There is an antivenom for Redback bites which is commercially available. Wiki Source
I haven’t uploaded this image for any artistic merit, but simply because it intrigues me. This little common garden spider appears to have built himself a house, and suspended it halfway up my garage wall. I can’t make out what it is made of, but he definitely uses it as a shelter (as I write this he’s on walkabout, inspecting the rest of the web, but he’ll soon be back, snuggled inside). Can anyone shed any light on this, as I’ve never seen it before? Update – I’ve now discovered that the ‘box’ is in fact part of a plastic clothes peg. How it got half way up my garage wall remains a mystery! And he’s still there … Canon Ixus 970 IS
I saw this little guy in my yard today… so I shot him. This closeup photo was taken with a Canon EOS 10D with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro prime lens. The shutter speed was 1/20th sec at f/4.5, no flash. The camera’s ISO was set to 100. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a remote shutter release. Your comments are always welcome! This is my little “friend”, Boris. He was kind enough to pose upside down for me today. My big macro lens was feeling left out, so I decided to introduce it it Boris this evening. The image is “as-is”, straight from the camera with no alterations or cropping. Natural available light was used exclusively. This closeup photo was taken with a Canon EOS 10D with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro prime lens. The shutter speed was 0.3 sec at f/8, no flash. The camera’s ISO was set to 400.
