  • I love hornets, I don’t like being around them but I’ve always thought that there are much worse jobs if you have to be reincarnated as an insect. / Nobody messes with a hornet. I was thinking of the Book of Kells when I got the idea for this. I worked for about a month burying small details in it so it’d be a decent conversation piece. 100% from scratch in 3DsMax and PS Add theyellowfury to your watchlist / Image copyright © 2008 Simon Deevy. I was shooting flowers when I saw this grasshopper standing on a basketball base and gave it a try without changing my camera settings, to be sure not to miss it (yes, I quite often scare them ! lol) / I liked the dof and how it peeks out of the smooth and light surrounding. / and how curious this little cutie looks ^^ / so here it is =)

  • I took this sometime in the summer in my bathroom. There was a giant spiderweb on the window so I sprayed it with water… most of it ended up on the window which is the bokeh you seen in the background. Enjoy!

  • Featured in Style! Class! Elegance! Excellence! April 18, 2009. / Featured in Insects, Bugs and Creepy Crawlies Group February 8, 2009. / Winner of the “Backed in Black” Challenge in Insects, Bugs and Creepy Crawlies Group Challenge February 7, 2009. The fritillaries and other butterflies and I got to be great friends during the warm weather last year. A wonderful benefit of all the hard work in the garden is not only pretty flowers, but the guests they entice to visit!! Image taken July 2, 2008 with the Nikon D40x, using the Nikon 70-300mm VR lens.

  • Featured in Natural Color and Light May 2, 2009. Best Viewed Full Size! “Oh yeah?” “Yeah!” “YEAH??” “YEAH!!” “WHO Says?” “I Says!” “Oh YEAH???” “YEAH!!!” “Awww … yer mudder wears Army Boots!!!” (Disclaimer … NO disrespect intended toward our fine women in uniform!! You’d have to be a fan of 1930’s or 1940’s era movies to catch the reference, lol!!! A la Mickey Rooney??) One of my all-time favorite moments captured in my garden last summer. Two little skippers in a mighty clash!!!! Image taken with the Nikon D40x and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens on July 15, 2008. Shutter speed 1/200, aperture f/5.6, exposure +.33, iso 200. Late afternoon / early evening light. Post processing included some duding up of the two somewhat raggedy coneflowers in the foreground with the Wacom Intuos4 tablet in Photoshop.

  • Featured in Top Shelf Wildlife & Nature Art October 25, 2009. / Featured in Weekly Theme Challenges October 1, 2009. Best on Full Size Another butterfly shot from my garden … image taken at dusk July 21, 2009 with the Nikon D300 and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens. Shutter 1/200, aperture f/11.0, exp. -.67, iso 400. Image taken in Montgomery County, Maryland. Post work in Photoshop included levels and cleaning up of the petals … since I don’t use pesticides the Japanese Beetles and a few others do some pretty serious munching.

  • Featured in Dimensions August 20, 2009. Best on Full Size Having some fun with the macro/micro lens in my garden (Montgomery County, Maryland) the other day, August 3, 2009, I found this darling little critter (thought she was a grasshopper but have been told by wiser heads than mine that she’s a Katy-Did) enjoying brunch. Loved the way she munched away on the flower thingie like a cob of hot buttered corn!!!! Handheld image taken with the Nikon D300 and the 60mm Nikon macro/micro lens. Shutter 1/640, aperture f/13, exp -.33, iso 200. Minor cropping and levels work in Photoshop.

  • Featured in Friends of Bangor and North Down Camera Club, Northern Ireland August 23, 2009. Best Viewed Full Size This little image is only one of nearly 400 (yes, I discovered the rapid fire thingie on the new camera over the weekend) I took of these most amazing creatures. It means the world to me that I was able to play with them as I’ve never seen a Monarch in our garden in Maryland. The “lawn” to the cabin next to ours on Blue Knob Mountain in Claysburg Pennsylvania has been left uncut all summer … and the most incredible wild vegetation has grown up. One is this pretty purple flowered stalk … which happen to be very much beloved by the Monarch Butterflies. Image taken with the Nikon D300 and the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens at shutter speed 1/160, aperture f/10.0, exp 0.00, iso 800. Focal length 220mm.

  • Featured in Bug Hunt! August 30, 2009. / Featured in Light In The Darkness August 26, 2009. Best on Full Size Another of the many monarch butterfly shots crammed into my computer from the August 16, 2009 shoot on Blue Knob Mountain in Claysburg, PA. Camera used was the Nikon D300 with the 70-300mm vr Nikon lens. Shutter 1/400, aperture f/9.0, exp. -.33, iso 800. This one got the layered treatment in Photoshop along with some levels work. Thanks to Princess of Shadows at Deviant Art for the textures.

  • This image consists of three layers, the background layer which is a daylily macro, and the two overlapping images, a Gulf Fritillary butterfly and a zinnia. After selecting the background image, I selected two photos to overlay over the original image. I removed everything but the butterfly and the zinnia in those images, copied and pasted them onto the background image, and then tweaked the layers for this effect. I also added a drop shadow to the entire image to give it the black backdrop for contrast. Hope someone likes this; it was lots of fun to put together.

  • as is / garden of peace, Geneva.
