“END OF INNOCENCE” Why do we learn things the hard way / when the truth is so simple? We are at the dawn of a powerful awareness, where play and / creativity can provide the answers we seek - / The path to our healing and wellbeing lies in reconnection with our inner child no matter how we have lost touch with that time of innocence. Yet ironically we fail to notice that our own children are being robbed of these very years of innocence and play that we now long to rediscover for ourselves. What is happening to the free and formative years where imagination and creativity reign supreme, / where fun and spontaneity define a child’s world and who they are? / It seems that from the moment of their birth, today’s children are heaped with the weight of our expectations, our stresses, our lifestyle challenges, and the choices we force upon them. / They are channeled into programs, daycares, preschools and educational institutions, / They are measured, recorded, graded, compared, molded and / fitted into bell-shaped curves, / bombarded with media at every level, pumped, hyped, drugged / or fed a toxic overload of adult content. / Any innocence they have gets trampled in the fast paced race for survival. They are more familiar with a screen and a login name than an / open field or forest or a tree to be climbed, / They are more at home with the digital, wireless, handheld, mobile, computerized world / than the freedom and beauty of the natural one. When their moment comes to seek their own wellbeing and happiness, / when all they have is themselves / and what lies within, / Who will they turn to? Who will they revert to? / Who will guide and save them, / if the inner child is not there, / nor ever has been? (Wendy Slee 2008) / Created for the 2008 Mullalyup Muster Art Prize / Theme: Endangered Species – notes from a romance with economic rationalism…. This is the image that won first prize. / / (I am still in shock!) / But also ecstatic, so a big thank you to Naomi and Elliott and all involved with the Mullalyup Gallery and this particular exhibition as I am very grateful for the privilege of entering work in such amazing company, and having it viewed by my peers….and to receive such high recognition/acknowledgement for my work.

Photograph taken with Sony Cybershot early this morning – 20 May 2009. Other than cropping for redbubble the picture is as ‘real’ as it gets, ‘untouched’ and ‘as is’. The metal man had arrived and was reinforcing Alkatraz aka ‘The Den’ as my pooches have become little Houdini’s amongst other things. The sound of the drill scared them and they came to me for protection – being the evil mother that I am I left them sitting and tried to catch the moment. To get all six in one place and not chewing, fighting, digging or eating was simply beautiful. The smallest of the three boys – short haired with very big feet! The Rottweiler, or Rottweil Metzgerhund (“Butchers Dog”), is a “medium to large size, stalwart dog” breed originating in Germany as a herding dog. It is a hardy and very intelligent breed. Rottweilers also worked as draught dogs, pulling carts to carry meat and other products to market. “Rottweiler breeders aim at a dog of abundant strength, black coated with clearly defined rich tan markings, whose powerful appearance does not lack nobility and which is exceptionally well suited to being a companion, service and working dog.” The Rottweiler was kept busy in these traditional roles until the mid-19th century when railroads replaced droving for getting livestock to market. Although there are still Rottweilers working stock all over the world, many other roles have been found for this versatile breed. During the first and second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service in various roles including as messenger, draught and guard dogs. Currently they are often used as search and rescue, assistance, guide dogs for the blind, guard and police dogs in addition to their traditional roles. Although an extremely versatile breed used in recent times for many other purposes, the Rottweiler is first and foremost one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of herding breeds. A multi-faceted herding and stock protection dog of exceptional ability, it is capable of working all kinds of livestock under a wide variety of conditions. The breed is an ancient one, whose history stretches back to the Roman Empire. In those times, the legions traveled with their meat on the hoof and required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle. One route the army traveled was through Württemberg and on to the small market town of Rottweil. The principal ancestors of the first Rottweilers during this time was supposed to be the Roman droving dog, local dogs the army met on its travels, and dogs with molosser appearance coming from England and The Netherlands. This region eventually became an important cattle area, and the descendants of the Roman cattle dogs proved their worth in both driving and protecting the cattle from robbers and wild animals. However, by the end of the 19th century as railroads became the main method for moving stock to market, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil. thalias friend I edited her .. although I didnt need to :) but here she is as if she were etched in the soul of all i think she speaks childhood. she was accompanying my granddaughter as she was opening birthday gifts.. and celebrated and awed and ooed, every step with her .
