I am embarking on a new creative venture of re-interpreting and redesigning record covers with different materials to give them a third dimension, dynamic colours and tangible textures using everything from leather to stitching to coloured ink. This is all in the the belief that record covers are truely amazing pieces of artwork in their images and to make them more tangible would be a wounderful thing. I have already finished Belle and Sebastian “Tigermilk” which will be uploaded soon am working on Pink Floyd and the Sex Pistols and my interpretation of The Velvet Underground and Nico “Andy Warhol” is in my portfolio. You could have hanging on your wall a slightly different interpretation of a record cover that has meant something to your life and that you really appreciate for its design and for the music, culture and time that it symbolises. So I’m putting it out there to you my creative friends (that would be you and you) what are your favourite record covers and why? and if you are interested in ordering a design feel free to let me know. Also any other ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and I hope you enjoy what is to come xx

  • Where are the painters, illustrators and graphic artists?

I’ve been keeping a close eye on the featured and popular pages on Red Bubble, and wondering where all the painters, illustrators and graphic artists are?! There are some AMAZING artists working in these media on the site, but it just seems like they’re all being lost in the system. I have nothing against photography or the photographers, but it’d be nice to see a more even spread. So – do your bit! Upload your best painting, illustrative or graphic pieces Seek out painted and illustrated works Comment, fave and watch! The popular algorithm is a closely guarded Red Bubble secret, however I’m sure doing the above things can help boost painting and illustration on this site. I know we can all help bring attention to the amazing artists on this site who deserve to have a little light shone on them! I will go through my own watch list and select and feature artists who I think deserve to be a little more popular. I have sent in my request to have an Illustration group on RB, and Kathleen emailed me back a few days later and said that many people had requested the same thing and that they were nutting out a plan for launching such a group. I really can’t wait, I do think a group dedicated to illustrators might be the shot in the arm needed for illustrative artists. If you’re with me, let me know!! Spread the word! (I have submitted this to a few groups, please let me know if this is appropriate – because I think it is, and highly beneficial to us all!!)

Today I started to reflect on my Journey on RedBubble since I joined in March 2008, and I came to the realization that it has taken many unexpected turns…. / / I had found RB through reading the posts on Empty Easel, and thought “why not?” / I was already listed on a number of artists’ sites and thought “this will be just another community of artists to join”... / / The first thing that was striking about RB was the absence of advertising and the ease of negotiating the site…uploads were fast as well…I hate waiting…. / / But soon I came to the real reason most of us love RB…the community….the uncompromising support for each other’s endeavours, and also for me, the perfect venue to showcase the collections of work I do outside of my main portfolio… / / I was also given the opportunity to instruct, something I also love to do, with my writings on Chinese Brush Painting, and I hope to be able to continue writing How-To articles on many different topics… / / So as the Journey continues, I would like to once again thank all those wonderful people who have me on their watchlists, and always take the time to comment on my latest offerings, {you know who you are} I now number you among my friends, and also those who have just found me and continue to compliment my work… all the group moderators who have chosen my work to feature….among them are All Things Orange, Fine Arts, Artists of the Orient, Illustration, All things Poetic Prose and Philosophical, Homepage {twice}, Mature Woman, and A Novel Idea…. those who have bought my work…..this is beginning to sound like and Oscar speech and if I don’t stop I will start thanking all the “little people” very soon, and believe me there are none…..... / / I hope this Journey continues to be as enjoyable as it has been so far…Janis

  • ink & blood: what do your tags say about you?

I love reading people’s tags. When I go to photography exhibitions, I’m often drawn to the artists’ statements more than the images. On RB, I always take in the tags just as much as I drink in the images. I’m sure the photographers reading this are shaking their heads, but I’m equally sure the writers are grinning :) On a wintry night with the wind slamming against my window, I’m finishing off some writing for submission, and considering the themes that are woven through many of my words. I’ve been scrolling through the tags to my writing and wondering what they reveal about me; my themes, my obsessions, my traits. I’m sure anyone who knows me can make some predictions about the tags that reoccur: wench, whiskey, faith, ripe, madness, stilettos and ink all get honourable mentions. I can see that one recurrent theme for me is scents, for I often focus on this all too underrated sense: vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, pears. And my representative animal is undoubtedly the serpent, for words of snakes, hissing and Medusa pour out of me in infrequent bursts. I know what they symbolise to me, a shining mix of seduction, psychosis and rebirth, and this is why I have thirteen of them tattooed on my body. I am a little surprised, however, to see how often they poke their heads out of my pen, and shed their skins on my keyboard. But the tags that came up most, in order, are desire, regeneration, blood, honey, and gold. I do wonder what that says about me.

As artists, we are often thrown off course by the judgements of others…We may start to doubt ourselves and try to please them at the expense of our own beliefs about our work. / We should be free to create exactly as we choose. Other people’s opinions are just that….they belong to the speakers. We can listen, but we do not need to accept them as our truths. In accepting them we may do work that is not true to our own vision, acceding to the opinions of those who may have their own particular agenda. Some times as we listen, we may hear suggestions that we can use…Other times we may hear words that ring with envy or jealousy of our creative gifts. We can allow others to have their feelings but we don’t need to accept them…. We do not need to allow our lives to be controlled by other people’s judgements and convictions…. ...Simple Abundance…Still Life with Kale….Watercolour and Pen and Ink When we learn to stay detached, and start to feel secure about ourselves and our art, when we respect ourselves for own views, the opinions of others can be placed in true perspective...Janis…inspired by The Artist’s Soul

  • A Few of My Favourite Things
    by Holly Ringland

La Coiffure, by Edgar Degas ...

La Coiffure, by Edgar Degas I didn’t exactly need arm twisting when I found out there was a free event happening at the National Gallery on Saturday afternoon: I would have handed over my credit card willingly to take respite from the unforgiving heat in an air conditioned cardboard box if I could have. Instead, for two sublime hours, I sat in a small theatre listening to some of Australia’s finest writers read from poems and novels by contemporaries of Degas, whose glorious art is the NGA’s current exhibition. I was entrenched in Paris, the bawdy house of Europe, through the affairs and cross-dressing of George Sand, Zola’s descriptions of the glittering displays and the dark underside of Paris under the Second Empire, Balzac’s account of an orgy, Baudelaire’s questioning of Romantic values, Flaubert’s platonic love letters and Théophile Gautier’s description of the Opera. I was swept from Paris to Russia to London via poetry and prose selections that left me breathless with spells brewing in my eyes and the words of classics lingering around me in a velvety fog. As I walked out of the theatre and back in the bright lemony light of day and the outside world, I felt the swirling words and sumptuous art settle over me, Paris soaking into my skin. The loveliness lingered well into my weekend and I have thought to myself often since how enamored I was by the experience, how instantly I fell in love with the writings of Degas’ contemporaries and the brush strokes of Degas’ social commentary layered under portraits of ballerinas and top-hat gentlemen or horse racing and carnivals in green countryside. I recognised the feeling; I feel the same way when I come across a piece of writing or artwork on Red Bubble that takes my breath away and envelopes me. As I was driving home, I thought to myself given the chance, I would have added that afternoon to my favourites. Ever since, I’ve been thinking about our favourites and what the function of ‘favouriting’ something means on Red Bubble. To me, that one little strip of light boxes on my Red Bubble page is my own personal gallery, my own personal bookshop; a cool quiet sanctuary that exists wholly and solely for my pleasure, delight and wonder. I favourite work that changes me, that alters who I was before I absorbed the work to who I was afterward. Being able to ‘favourite’ work on Red Bubble fills me with the same itching in my fingertips that I feel when I walk into an empty house and immediately start collecting things to fill the space with; colour, sentences, textures, moments, scents, themes and life. Since Saturday, I have been sumptuously and gloriously going back through all my favourites, reading your words and tracing the stroke of your pens, your ink, your paint, seeing the world through your eye. I found myself, after a page or two, hungry and cold and aching to physically crawl into and immerse myself in your work; to fill my belly with your colours and vowels and frames and sentences, to wrap myself in each piece and hibernate amidst such vibrant and potent creative energy: because like Degas and Balzac and Zola, our art and our writing are pieces of ourselves, whether built from experience or imagination, that we have set adrift in the world to say, here I was, here’s what I observed about being alive, here’s the ink I’ve spilled, the paint I’ve shaped, the charcoal I’ve recycled, the image I’ve scored on negative, here’s the mark I’ve left behind. Whether we’re Degas (or not) we are each of us artists in our own right, brave enough to allow our craft to see the light of day. I humbly thank you for the pieces of yourself I fill my Favourites sanctuary with.

  • Sam's Suspects... complete.

    Sam’s Suspects is now complete… / Well as far…

Sam’s Suspects is now complete… / Well as far as this series of drawings goes. I’m sure I could come up with some more suspects to expose. I have included the text of my original journal (below) that announced and explained this series for those who are just now tuning in. I really want to thank everyone for their support of the series with daily visits, favorites and comments. It is all for you… Sam Dantone Sam’s Suspects, / I have been wanting to mix it up a bit here on the bubble. ( thinking out side the bubble you might say ) So, I have come up with an idea of creatively posting a series of drawings. My method is aimed to entertain those who are watching me on a regular basis. We have six thumbnails on our profile pages for our T’s and for our artwork. I will post a new piece each day this coming week to present a series of six drawings. By weeks end, all of my art thumbnails will be of this series. I usually only have internet access on weekdays, so I will post Suspect One today and Suspects Two through Six Monday-Friday of next week. The content of the drawings in this series are part of the world’s problem… as Sam suspects.

  • My Tattoo Design Being Brought To Life!!

So, last week I uploaded some art of a tattoo design I had done for my sister, Sam. I called it “Pressure” as that is the name of the song that the lyrics in the design came from. / Pressure by Paramore from the album All We Know Is Falling / Original Linework by Me: / Original design with color by Me: / Yesterday, 10/21/09, Sam went to Sacred Heart – a tattoo shop in Chattanooga, TN to get the outline done. After months of talking with their artists and looking through their portfolios, she decided to have Josh Griswold do her ink. See his online portfolio over at myspace HERE He even has an upcoming feature in East Coast Ink Magazine Sam really felt that she connected with Josh better than the other artists and she felt that his style would work best with my design. Plus….he’s in LOVE with my birds! :) / Josh is using some newer needles that are tapered – this allows for smoother entry into the skin and better glide allowing for a faster, neater tattoo. Plus, it holds more ink and puts more into the skin making the tattoo stay brighter, longer. The coolest part, I think, is that Josh is a highly funcioning Autistic! Tattooing is his focus, his center and he’s an amazing artist! It took Josh 1 1/2 hours to do the outline and I am sooooooo pleased with the outcome! He shrank the design a bit so that it would fit Sam’s arm better and he tweeked the ribbon a bit, giving it rougher edges and making it fit the design a little tighter. Other than that, he really kept to my design and it looks fabulous! Sam sent me the pics in a text message last night and I actually cried! Why? Because I am honored that my sister is getting my art on her skin, part of the design on her arm is a symbol for me and our mom, the tattoo artist has done such a wonderful job, and Sam LOVES it! :) So, here it is…..step one in bringing my tattoo design to life! I can’t wait to see it finished and colored! It sounds like the yellows, oranges, greens, and light blues will be UV reactive ink so most of her tatt is going to glow under black lights! I’m so jealous! LOL :)

I decided EMI was a good thing, but it is a monthly and we had lots to say, show and discuss so I jumped the gun and started ink which will be more of a standard daily blog based news and information center. The first pressing is out and it’s filled with a few tasty morsels of arty goodness. The announcement of a logo contest with prize money of $500 to the winner. Pot shots from ramondoantonio, eon’s latest, lilith and Martin Muir to name a few. And of course my favorite news about an EMI staffer who is getting some national television exposure. Drop in and say hello and let me know what you think in the comment section, good or bad I can take it. Earthmonster ink

I just wanted to share a portrait that the talented Barbara Glatzeder made of me today. I feel a bit weird to have a self-portrait done (and flattered) but I think Barbara did a great job of it and I envy her ability to nail a likeness (which is something I can’t seem to get right whenever I attempt a portrait).
