  • Australia's bats aren't doing well in the new heat?

Temperature peaks killing off flying foxes / By Charles Clover, Environment Editor / Last Updated: 6:01pm GMT 27/11/2007 Scientists say that mass die-offs of Australian flying foxes, among the most dramatic recorded, show how the survival of whole species could be affected by climate change. / Roosting fruit bats / On Jan 12 2002, when temperatures exceeded 108ºF (42.9ºC) in New South Wales, 3,500 flying foxes or fruitbats in nine colonies were found dead. Most of these were the tropical black flying fox. Since 1994 some 30,000 flying foxes have been killed by 19 similar events, with most of these being the temperate grey-headed flying fox, according to Dr Justin Welbergen of Cambridge University. There was little evidence for die-offs before 1994, the scientists found. Temperatures have risen on average by 0.74ºC on average over the past 100 years. The higher susceptibility of females and young to higher temperatures can have a serious effect on breeding populations, according to the paper published in the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B. advertisementStefan Klose, co-author of the paper, said: “In a very dramatic way we see the outcome of extreme climate events that are predicted to increase as a result of climate change by the Intergovermental Panel on Climate Change. “These animals are simply not able to cope with higher temperatures and so they die. They are the seed dispersers for Australia’s rainforest so the ecosystem effects could be very considerable.” /

G’day all. I’m new to this site and was introduced by my younger brother (Paul Fleming – ‘CuriousNature’). If you compare our photos, you’ll see who got the artistic genes! I’m new at this so any and all comments are most welcome. I’m always trying to improve my shots and finally understanding my cameras features and limitations. I’ve never really considered my photos as ‘art’ – I just enjoy taking them and showing them to like-minded friends and colleagues. I’ve uploaded a few of my better shots on this site and hope that you all enjoy them as much as I do. Cheers

As I continue to learn about art and its etiquette I find myself at a dilema / regarding signatures on artwork. As a person who buys original art, I prefer signed pieces. I hear from many however that it is not proper to sign your work. Why not? If you are happy with a work that you’ve completed, why wouldn’t you want your name on it? I believe the last word I heard was that it was seen as vain or egotistical. Leaving a signature off of an artwork or putting it on the artwork means nothing other than personal preference to me. I’ll admit that recently I’ve discovered why NOT to put my name in the bottom corners. It really distracts from the piece when its a photograph. If this is the case for the artwork, then it makes more sense to me. Then again I remember buying Ansel Adams prints and was upset at the poster format with his name emblazoned in large format on a white portion (I’m not fond of white either). I had the framer trim off the bottom of the print so I could have just the photos of the trees. I would have been okay with his signature in the corner…just not the typed stuff. I want to know your thoughts, opinions and professional practice please! Thanks to you all!

  • Art Changes Lives
    by Tania Rose

So many of you have contributed to the Hospital Xmas Gift Initiative...

So many of you have contributed to the Hospital Xmas Gift Initiative ....i just had to share my gratitude for the thousands of people you have helped by your small donation. I have just received an email from someone who has thanked me for saving their life! / Of course, i didn’t ACTUALLY save their life. They were responsible for that themselves. But such was their extreme gratitude, that they wanted me to understand the significance of the music and meditation recordings I had created in their own life. Art, in all it’s forms, changes lives. Children who grow up with artworks on the wall, are influenced by them. The textures, the shapes, the messages, the colours…these things feed their young developing minds with possibilities and thoughts, which lead to character and perception. Imagery can soothe, can take the viewer into another land beyond the room. Your Art is a portal into another world, a window to a place of magic, where real magic can be drawn from. I once met a old woman who spoke of her miraculous recovery from near death. She told me that she used to listen to one record everyday, and stare into a painting which she referred to as being “other worldly”. She said it was there that she battled the fierce monster inside of her frail, dying body. She played the battle over and over through the painting and the music, for months, as those around her mourned her imminent death. When she could no longer speak, she would just look at the record player in her room, and the nurses would know to put the music on for her. As she would sleep, she would dream-up weaknesses in her opponent, and use her knowledge to take her new places through the painting. Even after her recovery, she would still play the music and look at the painting, reflecting on her battlecries to ward off any new opponents who might dare to invade her domain. Art heals / Artists heal / You can heal / We all can heal

/ / Well the pile is getting bigger! / All of your donations mean that thousands of hospital patients will be listening to calm music during their hospital stays. I’m still amazed at how many emails i receive every weeks from people undergoing cancer treatments using music and meditation as a way to cope and heal. And hospitals don’t have the resources to spend on music cds…sadly. / / / / Thank you all for donating your $7 to The Hospital Xmas Gift Initiative / It really does made a difference, and there’s still time to give. / If you would like to earmark a CD to give to your own local hospital through your donation, please let me know. You can even deliver it personally, and take a photograph of the handover on the day, get the local paper involved, and spread the story of how generous we crazy artists really are!!

no juicy bits – / Words 1,004 including title / suggested number of words 1,000

this is something i have never really attempted before …character analysis… having reached the requisite number of words i am not convinced of the analysis and acutly aware that the tense changes on several occassions.
