“Consequences”, the signature piece from the Genetic Bill of Rights Painting Series by Mariam Muradian & C.C. Arshagra. The artist was rapidly losing her sight throughout the painting of the entire series; this one signature piece was painted by Mariam Muradian when she was blind (a side effect suffered from a medication given to assist her heart). The Genetic Bill of Rights was drafted in 2000 by The Council for Responsible Genetics and GeneWatch, yet most people do not even now that it exists. These rights exist for everyone; to inform people that they have the right to govern their own genes, bodies, cultures, and biodiversity. The entire card set is worth owning and sharing. The knowledge this series embodies is priceless. 2007 Copyright. All Rights Reserved to Mariam Muradian. / Acrylics, oil pastels, charcoal on 48”x 60” canvas. Tags Tags Tags. They help people find your work, improve you chances of being featured, and google search will love you more. So learning to do it right is a great idea. Excessive tagging does not work in your favor. You should only use tags that are obvious keywords that would connect a searcher with your work. Let me give you an example… Here is an image of a calculator (courtesy of google search) A good set of tags would be: calculator, numbers, mathematics, maths, buttons, machine, white, photograph A not so good set of tags would be: calculator, numbers, integers, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0, +, -, /, add, subtract, divide, mulitply, square root, screen, buttons, grey, black , white, maths, mathematics, science, finance, bookkeeping, nerd, office, administration, machine, technology, digital Why is the second set the weaker one? Because most of the terms tagged there only have the tiniest little thing to do with the image. This then goes on to pollute the searches of people who are actually looking for an image of a + symbol or an image of a nerdy caricature . The more polluted the search is, the more times people will just give up and go elsewhere. Anyway, hope that is some good general information for you.
One of my first picture taken over the week-end with the 1Ds Mark III. The dynamic range of this camera is simply unbelievable…

Link listing of free software relating to graphics and imagery. These are either freeware, open source or donationware – not free trials. Some are “light” or free versions of a full-version software. As with anything, PLEASE READ THE TERMS OF USE and Licensing for each thing you download. Just because it is free that doesn’t always mean you can use it for commercial outputs. I have not tried all of these personally, so I can’t give you recommendations on their functionality; the graphic/paint programs which I have used (some I still use for certain things) may have notations of my opinion on them, but it is just that, my own personal opinion. Many of these are available for both Mac and PC, but you’ll have to go check at the link site yourself – make sure you check the system requirements before you install anything (mamy older programs may not be compatible with WindowsXP or Vista), and be sure you have an up-to-date antivirus. I have accessed all of these links and downloads with no warnings, but it pays to be safe. One last thing…if you use free software and find it useful, please donate to the creators (or upgrade to the paid version if they have one at reasonable cost) when you are able. Donations are how we can encourage free software makers to continue making the software free. MINI ANIMATORS FOR ANIGIFS Unfreez2 I have been using this since the days of “blinkies” – this is probably one of the tiniest programs – takes up no space and almost no memory and creates an animated gif. You need to have all your files ready to go when you use this. There is no time line, and not much in the way of control, so it’s not for those who use more sophisticated programs. It will, however, make a decent animated avatar. Pivot by Peter Bone. A stick-figure animator. There is a sample on the homepage. Another very simple program to create small anigifs and and avatars. Click the software link to go to the download page. GRAPHICS & PHOTO Editing PaintStar – supports 30+ file formats, image morphing, full editing/graphic tools, supports layers and multiple paths. Freeware. GimPhoto & GimPad / GimPhoto is a GIMP modification with a new menu layout, a great selection of plugins, and many additional resources for a more professional look and feel in a digital photo retouching and image editing application package. It more closely resembles the look of Photoshop. Portable Gimp You can run this version of GimpShop from a thumb drive, or cd/dvd instead of installing it. Be sure to read the installation info – you will need to download at least one other file if you want the interface to look like Photoshop. There is a third file that gives you the PS background window, however, I did not download this since it is buggy. I recently got this Portable Gimp for my new laptop (already own two versions of CS (2 & 3) for different computers, so I can’t afford another version for a travel computer (particularly when I don’t plan to do much editing on it). The laptop has Vista Home Premium on it, and this portable version with PS GUI file installed seems to work just fine. New Photobie and Photobie Studio Both versions are free. There are also helpful forums and tutorials on the site. NOTE For anyone interested in other “portable” applications, the “PortableApps”: site has a goodly number. You can find the page here These are all freeware or open source, and it includes the Mac OS (an older version – see Mac-on-a-stick). Ivy Generator – not really an editing program, but it generates fairly realistic ivy for use in your collages or other imaging. Artrage2 (free version & paid version is only $25 – freeware version is somewhat limited but good for basic art) Artweaver (decent simple painting program with variety of drawing styles and supports layers and transparency – good for creating patterns and texture) Cenon for mac or linux (haven’t used this since it won’t work on PC, but it looks interesting and I’d love to try it) Gimp (one of the most powerful open source image editors with an interface and functions similar to Photoshop) ImageMagick Inkscape Vector Graphics program (a bit of a learning curve with this; similar in function to Adobe Illustrator) Paint.net (drawing and paint program; supports layers) Pixarra’s Twisted Brush Free Edition Pixia Drawing & Painting) Photofiltre – this version is free and does not support layers, the studio version is 29 euros (the studio version supports layers and transparency and has many functions similar to Photoshop) Project Dogwaffle Free Version Serif DrawPlus Skencil Vector Graphics Smooth Draw Nx MobaPhoto – not an image editor or paint program, but useful to create image galleries for websites. PANORAMA MAKERS Open Source Panorama Tools Autostitch Canon Panorama Stitch PanoGuide FRACTAL PROGRAMS Fyre – random image generator. This is pretty cool. Please be sure to check the model downloads for licensing terms. If you are unsure about using a model in a sellable product, email the modeler – they are usually very good about responding. Mostly they don’t want you sell or give away the model/mesh, but will usually allow it’s use in a rendered image for sale. If the license doesn’t state that it is available for commercial use, please don’t use it without contacting the owner first. A simple email from them will act as a license for your renders. If they don’t allow it, please don’t do it. Other Useful Utilities Revo Uninstaller – very good program to help in uninstalling programs that don’t come with their own uninstaller. Yes, windows has an uninstall function, but sometimes there are bits left behind. Revo can help with that. Freeware CCleaner A cookie cleaner that cleans out a lot more than cookies. It can also do a registry check and remove unnecessary entries. Freeware PC Inspector Smart Recovery – recover image files from memory cards Startup Control Panel For those who want to control what programs load on startup, but aren’t sure how to do it, this small control panel applet is a useful tool. (I’ve loaded this onto both my daughters’ computers because they don’t understand how to stop the unnecessary programs from loading. This little program was easy to explain to them.) Those who understand computer maintenance and techs won’t need or want this, since you can do the same from your control panel. Startup Monitor A small program that monitors your startups and notifies you when any program/file registers itself to run at startup. RunAlyzer, FileAlyzer, RegAlyzer – from the makers of Spybot S&D RunAlyzer / Gives an overview over many relevant system settings, intended to replace the Tools section currently integrated into Spybot-S&D. FileAlyzer / FileAlyzer allows a basic analysis of files (showing file properties and file contents in hex dump form) and is able to interpret common file contents like resources structures (like text, graphics, HTML, media and PE). RegAlyzer / RegAlyzer is a tool to browse and change the registry. Office Software Open Office.org (comparable to MS Office) Floppy Office (a software package containing a dozen applications. The entire thing will run from a thumb drive, a floppy, or your computer. A very small download for those with connection issues. Contains a useful ftp client.) Computer Security & Antivirus Software How to Remove Antivirus XP, Antivirus XP2008, Antivirus XP2009 (there have been a spate of infections of this nasty, so it seems helpful to include this link, which also includes appropriate software downloads). How to Remove VIRUS ALERT (ditto the above) Spybot Search & Destroy – variety of functions including cleanup of malware, adware, browser protection, system internals and other uses. HijackThis – helps remove browser hijacks, homepage hijacks, identify & remove malware, adware, trojans etc. NOTE: do not use this on your own if you don’t know anything about computers. If you need help to identify and clean up computer infections go to What The Tech (formerly TomCoyote forums) and post your problem in the appropriate forums. If you need help or explanations, bmail me. A-squared – very good anti-trojan. They also have pro versions of the anti-trojan, as well as anti-malware. Malwarebytes – a variety of useful anti-malware tools. Tried and true; I’ve used some of these quite often to clean up other computers. Adaware Free – adware removal tool (other tools available, though not necessarily free) – I don’t use this one personally. AVG Free Antivirus – Free antivirus & browser protection. I’ve read some minor complaints about false-positives with this, but I’ve been using this for about five years with no complaint. I also install this on every computer I clean. One thing to note about some OEM software installed on new computers – products like Norton & MacAffee: the subscription for free virus signature updates will often run out after a year or two – be sure to check yours if this is what you use. This happened to both of my daughters – thinking they had antivirus software. Avast Free Antivirus – another decent freeware antivirus I’ve used. ThreatFire (formeryly known as Cyberhawk): “ThreatFire is different. It does not rely on signatures, but instead constantly analyzes your computer’s behavior to detect and block any malicious activity. ThreatFire protects immediately so you know your PC and your valuable data is always secure.” Rather than listing all of these available products (which there are many – but be careful, because some will cause more harm than good to your computer) here’s a trusted site where there’s a decent listing of helpful programs: Freebytes Guide to Free Anti-virus/Anti-malware Pacs Portal A fairly large listing of computer start-up programs (.exe files) and what they do, or what they are used for, and whether or not your computer needs them to load on start-up. It also lists start-ups for trojans and malware which makes this site extremely helpful in identifying the files that are loading in your process list. CHILDREN There are also some drawing & paint programs in the free/open source category available specifically geared to children in age ranges from 4 or 5 to 10 or 12. Encourage the artist in your children from a young age. Tux Paint Drawing for Children Smooth Teddy LAST BUT NOT LEAST Here’s a site that I check every day. I’ve gotten a couple of pretty decent programs from here. They offer a licensed software download for free, every day. To get it licensed you must download and install it on the day it’s given away – and you need to follow the activation instructions in the downloaded zip file. Give-away-of-the-day There are two drawbacks here: most of the time the software offered is of no use or interest to me personally (that doesn’t make it bad, it could be that stuff offered is very useful to someone else), and secondly…if your computer crashes or you buy a new one, the software license can’t be recovered or transferred to another computer. There are, however, times where the software will be offered again at a later date. NOTE: you can’t always trust the thumbs up/thumbs down ratings. A lot of people will give the software a thumbs down because it’s of no interest to them. I’ve been following this site for about six months, and I have a number of programs I use (including Business Cards MX3.9, Wondershare’s WebVideo Author, Sound Editor Deluxe, A2 Antiwaremalware, Moyea Flash Video MX, Acoolsoft Powerpoint to Video Converter, Photo Story Gold, iSpring Pro, Wondershare’s Photoo Collage Studio and their Flash Slideshow Builder, and Dogwaffle’s “PD Particles”), Dogwaffle Project (not the free one), and like from them, along with 3 games. You can scroll through some of the previous give-aways on the main page to see the variety of stuff they offer. On the weekends, they offer a free game give away on their sister site Game-give-away-of-the-day This is not a complete listing of all freeware available, but it is fairly representational of what’s available, from the simple to the more complex. If anyone has links that fit these categories, please feel free to add them in the comments section, or bmail them to me and I’ll add them into the body with a notation of who submitted them. / __________ One of the reason’s for this compiled list is that I find myself frequently pointing people to links for software of this nature. I just thought it would be easier to keep it one place.

Looking for a ‘check list’ or ‘running sheet’ for your next exhibition? Thanks to the power of google.com, and a spare hour on a Saturday afternoon of sporadic rain, I found a few PDF’s that should help you: Events Management Check List ... I really like this one! It’s comprehensive, has tick-boxes, and could easily be modified to suit any type of event. Running, Promoting and Organsing your Event / ... Page 1 to 17 have great information on setting up and ensuring your t’s are crossed and i’s are dotted. Page 18 to 20 are the pages you want to print! Club/Association Management Program / ... This is a most extensive booklet (36 pages) outlining EVERYTHING about exhibition running. Whilst it is aimed at sport clubs, the information is easily transferable to anyone’s exhibition. Page 19 says … / ” It is essential that an event has an evaluation process that is more than simply monitoring the planning and implementation. Evaluation should be carried out through the life of the event as well as at the end. Information recorded from monitoring provides a record and can be kept as a historical record for events that are held regularly. Criteria for success, and methods for measuring those criteria, need to be set when the event is first planned. Measures depend on the important questions to be answered. Questions may have to do with attendances, quality of staff, revenue, public opinion and press coverage. Methods for obtaining the information needed to answer the questions might include statistics for attendance, questionnaires from participants and spectators, and financial records. “ Survival Guide to Event Management / ... Another long-winded yet comprehensive (56 page) PDF that has a lot of useful information. Visit these pages for the details you really want: 9, 16, 24, 27, 32, 36-37. But you MUST read every other page in conjunction to get an overall and complete view of how to run your exhibition properly and successfully! Submission form for Major Events / Activities in Adelaide / ... Maybe your exhibition is SOOOO BIG that you need to fill this in. Event Guidelines / ... This could easily have been ripped off from any one of the suggested PDF’s above, but it still has some interesting information. You’ll want pages 21 to 24.
This is my artwork entry for the ‘Freedom To Create Prize’. It is very complex in the multi-issue nature of the messages it is meant to portray. What may appear as separate issues are really a part of a larger single issue showing how the individual issues are inseparable from one another. The artwork addresses the following individual issues as a whole… / / 1.) Feeding the population of the Earth, and not just the hungry or starving. / / 2.) The great public misconception that biomass fuels, such as ethanol, are really a ‘green’ alternative technology, when in fact, they are not a viable and sustainable alternative energy source, as they create exponentially many more energy, environmental, and human rights issues than they resolve. / / 3.) The ongoing loss and abuse of the very few fertile soils that exist on Earth due to the accepted agricultural practices we continue to use in how we grow food. Please take the time to read the article that I have written that accompanies this artwork at the link shown below. It will give you a basic primer as to why these issues are inseparable. I believe that once you see the bigger picture emerge you will never see the smaller issues that it involves in the same light again. / / Food… Not Fuel by Art4Earth / http://www.redbubble.com/people/art4earth/writing/1681231-food-not-fuel / / All my own proceeds on the sale of this artwork are being donated to the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization, as this is the only organization I am aware of that provides an agricultural assistance program combined with food relief programs to help feed the world’s hungry and starving. / / United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization / www.fao.org/ / / Oh !... Details about the creation of the artwork. / The backdrop was rendered in Terragen. The terrain file in Terragen was sculpted by myself by digitally hand-painting a greyscale heightfield map in Photoshop, and then importing the bitmap file version into Terragen. The multitude of other environmental files used in Terragen were also created myself. The gas pump was created from a photo I took myself. The starving child was created from a PD image from the web. The pump and child shadows were drawn in Photoshop. All of these separate components were than composited, painted, and re-touched in Photoshop. Thanks for the visit, and please read the associated article. Peace & Love, / / Art 4 EartH

I show you here some tricks, how to sell more… But first some basics…. Don’t forget, that you are selling to real customers, not other RedBubblers (even when it sometimes happens…) And because of this, the customer has to find you, when you didn’t call his attention on your own, already…. And how he finds you…. mostly through Google of course. That’s why it is so important, that you tag your work right… But even when you do this, it needs a little trick, that the customer also sees your work… Here an example: When I look for my work at Google and type for example “Shirt Allah”, I will see this pictures And what did I found? I really have found some of my shirts… This is great! But when you click at the pictures, you will find a little trick behind this…. When you click at the pictures, you will see, that what appears, is not the original t-shirt picture, but pictures, which I have copied to the description at the right side… And why is it so… Because, Google (only) shows the pictures, which you have in your descriptions and comments! When I would not have this shirt-pictures in my description, so noone would ever find my shirts… And this is the trick: Put pictures of other work in your description (of same theme as your main work)... And do it in that way, that everyone can already see the whole product, not only the design or the photography, because this doesn’t attract the customer… just another picture next to others… And another small trick: Link the pictures not to your art-main page, but directly to the selling site It saves the time of the customer… he doesn’t need to read all the comments of other RedBubblers, when he just wants to buy something… And don’t forget, that: The pictures in descriptions are visible at your BubbleSite... So when you also put in your comments a big detail-picture of your work, it maybe will appear more attractive and shows the great quality of your work… I wish you a lot of sells… Nuh Sarche Read also How I promote my work outside in the real world................ or You can see live, who visits your site if you want… or Do you know the Google Translator…???

I have recently had occasion to comment on a person’s photography, and give some advise, as I see it. As I sometimes do, I have collated it into this journal so that it may serve others as well. These are my own opinions, and not to be taken as coming from some authority on the subject. Hope it helps, particularly with Christmas arriving soon, and lots of family members milling around the lounge room. When shooting people, particularly when you have (a) a busy background, and (b) have not much distance to the background – a wider aperture helps isolate the subject/s. This is possibly the single-most visual and initial difference between what looks like a family snap, and a professional photo – largely because point-and-shoots do not have the ability go to very wide apertures. Wide apertures decrease the DoF (depth of field) – which is the region that is in appreciably good focus. A bit of experience (or online DoF calculators, or your DoF preview button) helps you to select the correct aperture to bring to attention the areas of a scene that you want to highlight. Narrow apertures (higher F-number) produce deeper DoF – bringing more of the scene into focus. Useful for landscapes and such – not so great for a busy lounge room. The point to the photo. / It helps to keep in mind as you work, what exactly you are trying to achieve. Lucking shots is what most people do, and being pleasantly surprised every now and then. But the truth is – there is no need for luck. A photo is a story – a visual slice of time, frozen forever in a way that cannot be accomplished by other means. A good photo maximises this concept, by bringing a message, story, emotion to the viewer. A good photographer is a storyteller. A great photo reads like a book. Light / When we shoot, we are shooting ‘light’. We are capturing how light reacts on physical objects, just as our eyes do. Learning to read, use and manipulate light sounds complex, but in fact it is not. A good professional photographer can immediately see and sense how light falls, how shadows interact, how scenes and moods change with different lighting. Using available light such as sunlight, or overhead house lights is one of the most important things one can learn. This can be accomplished from moving yourself around a subject to take advantage of the conditions, by moving your subjects, and/or by moving your light sources. Using flash or another source of artificial light is a field unto itself and is worth learning, but I won’t get too far into here, other than to say – pointing a flash at your subject and firing is the least effective and natural way to add light to a scene. Try bouncing your flash off a ceiling or wall. Focus / Obviously, your subject, or at the least, the poignant portion of your subject, should be in focus. Aside from the obvious, DoF comes into play. Widening your aperture will reduce the depth of your focus area, as well as bring in more light, allowing faster shutter speeds and/or lower ISO. When focusing, there are a few methods to ‘nail it’. There are very few times when manual focus is preferable with indoor group photos and current day cameras. One method is ‘focus & recompose’ – a system I use very often when shooting from 20’ away or greater (the further away your subject, the greater your DoF). This is performed by selecting your exact focal point on the subject (like the eye) using the centre area in your viewfinder, half depressing your shutter release button, and recomposing your photo to frame as you see fit. Alternatively, you can use a different focal point, which will minimise your recomposing, and therefore not shift your plane of view appreciably (which can shift your focus at closer ranges and wider apertures). Composition and framing / Another major difference between snapshots and great photos. When I take a photo, I instinctively imagine the image in my viewfinder hanging on someone’s wall. This is before I release the shutter. I have done this for so long, and so instinctively, that I rarely need to crop any photos. It is a good practice, saving post-processing time, allowing you to keep the entire frame (and pixels), and also satisfying. All scenes have a natural flow to them. Just as we read books, our eyes follow an image from top left to bottom right. This does not mean that all photos need to take advantage of that particular physiological trait, but it is handy to keep in mind. A good photo has balance, with areas of the scene harmonising to each other using light intensity, facial expressions, emptiness, lines, etc. In fact this is a whole huge subject in itself – the psychology of photography. Timing / Since a photograph is a slice of time, getting your timing right, particularly with moving and animate subjects – makes a whole lot of difference. It is one of the main things I look for when shooting. I think of a snapshot as a glass of milk. A well-timed shot is a Pina Colada :) / Look for expressions on faces that relate to the mood/scene/environment. Hands have expressions also, and often carry as much ‘weight’ as faces. Exposure / In my journal I have a brief commentary on exposure – it may help you. Not plugging myself here – just something I wrote quickly to save time when people ask – I point them to it instead of re-writing. Feel free to debate, query or challenge. / Hope this helps you in your Christmas photography, and have fun
