  • “Independence Pass Overlook” This past summer, I was able to get to parts of Colorado that I haven’t been to in close to 30 some odd years to do some shooting, and this is one of those places. “Famous” (perhaps even “Infamous”) Independence Pass….the second highest paved mountain pass in Colorado. Last time I was here I was about 11, and my Mom said she would never ever come back again, to drive on this road. It is incredibly narrow, though they have done some construction since then, however, what ya see here is just what ya get…..no guard rails and straight down, thousands of feet. It is stunning though, and my only real regret is that I couldn’t shoot it in the morning light, though I think next year I will, just will need to do an overnight as it is several hours away. From “Wikipedia”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Pass_%28Colorado%29 / The pass is at the summit of the ridge of the Sawatch Range between Aspen and Leadville, on the border between Pitkin and Lake counties and is located within the confines of the White River National Forest. The pass connects the upper valley of the Roaring Fork River upstream from Aspen with the headwaters of the Arkansas River near Leadville. The pass is traversed by Colorado State Highway 82 and is the second-highest paved mountain pass in Colorado. The top of the pass is well above the tree line and the terrain type at the top is tundra. Its narrow road provides for slow cautious navigation on its approaches. Several switchbacks on each side of the pass make careful planning a must. The pass is always closed in winter, from the first heavy snow fall in autumn, often opening only in late May. • I really struggled with the development of an idea for the Keystone State motto. I finally came up with this image. Motto of Pennsylvania is “Virtue, Liberty, Independence” The composite features the American flag for Liberty as it really is a symbol of the freedom of the U.S. It is also appropriate since the woman credited for creating the first American flag was Betsy Ross, a resident of Philadelphia. I also used the Pennsylvania State flag in this image to represent Independence. One of the original colonies and states, their leaders did not want to form another all powerful government. Therefore, they reserved certain powers for the independent state governments. The independence of the states has been one of the bedrock elements of the U.S. since it was formed. And the figure of the little girl praying is symbolic of the guarantee of every American to worship, in the faith of their choice, in the pursuit of increased virtue. I hope that you like it!

  • Girls spinning on a whirling carnival ride during a mid summer’s night; from a series: Sunset on the Small Town Carnival. Owing to the rise of mega-parks and high liability insurance, small town carnivals are rapidly disappearing. Whenever possible I try to document these vanishing icons of the Twentieth Century American landscape. The original image was shot at 1/15th with a camera flash and 2 remote strobes. The long exposure shows motion and the flash freezes detail. I used opposing color filters on the remotes to get better depth in the subject. In post processing I used a combination of effects from both Illustrator and PhotoShop. The big trick was getting the file size down by rasterizing my AIs in PS and reopening them in AI and re-saving as a vector.

  • The Chesapeake Mill
    by Andrew Walker

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Well a little bit of history from the American war of Independence, the USS Chesapeake was built in 1799 following a few scrapes along the way found its way into the war of 1812, It sailed out of Boston Harbour and into harms way (the harm in this case being HMS Shannon). The Battle lasted 6 minutes… Chesapeake lost and was taken as a prize. After being used by the Royal Navy it was scrapped at Portsmouth. It’s timbers were offered up at auction and eventually a buyer came forward, this was a Mr Edney who planned to build a mill in Wickham, a small village to the North West of Portsmouth in the Meon Valley. The timbers from the ship form the beams and boards within the mill. To this day the shot holes and shrapnel marks from the ships past can still be seen. Who says that recycling is a new thing?
