  • An (economically) independent peasant worker

In big cities, if a person living in the neighborhood just enters other people’s home without notice and chats with them about trivial matters even their domestic trivialities for two hours, then this will be taken as intrusion. But in many rural areas in China, this is one of the conventions. People could just enter other people’s homes and stay there chatting for hours. I learned this from an electric welder. I med the electric welder at a bus stop who dressed well and had some independent air. I guessed he was a peasant worker so I talked to him. He told me he had the official certificate as an electric welder. So he could always find temporary jobs on his own. Even when there was no work to do for a period he wouldn’t go back to his village in Sichuan province, a rural province with a population of 87.5 million in 2005 (Some study says the land of the province can support no more than 91.81 million people.). He said he had worked in big cities for some years and was no longer tolerant to people’s above mentioned intrusion. And that’s the reason why he didn’t want to go back. When he told me about the intrusion he looked feeling awfully bad about it. It seems economic independence makes it possible for him to keep a distance from local conventions. Please compare the life of peasant workers who have to work and live collectively, here.

  • Virtue, Liberty, Independence
    by cvdad

    US$4.28–US$114.00

I really struggled with the development of an idea for the Keystone State motto. I finally came up with this image. Motto of Pennsylvania is “Virtue, Liberty, Independence” The composite features the American flag for Liberty as it really is a symbol of the freedom of the U.S. It is also appropriate since the woman credited for creating the first American flag was Betsy Ross, a resident of Philadelphia. I also used the Pennsylvania State flag in this image to represent Independence. One of the original colonies and states, their leaders did not want to form another all powerful government. Therefore, they reserved certain powers for the independent state governments. The independence of the states has been one of the bedrock elements of the U.S. since it was formed. And the figure of the little girl praying is symbolic of the guarantee of every American to worship, in the faith of their choice, in the pursuit of increased virtue. I hope that you like it!

  • The Chesapeake Mill
    by Andrew Walker

    US$3.42–US$91.20

Well a little bit of history from the American war of Independence, the USS Chesapeake was built in 1799 following a few scrapes along the way found its way into the war of 1812, It sailed out of Boston Harbour and into harms way (the harm in this case being HMS Shannon). The Battle lasted 6 minutes… Chesapeake lost and was taken as a prize. After being used by the Royal Navy it was scrapped at Portsmouth. It’s timbers were offered up at auction and eventually a buyer came forward, this was a Mr Edney who planned to build a mill in Wickham, a small village to the North West of Portsmouth in the Meon Valley. The timbers from the ship form the beams and boards within the mill. To this day the shot holes and shrapnel marks from the ships past can still be seen. Who says that recycling is a new thing?
