  • Machu Picchu
    by Rhona

    US$3.14–US$83.60

Hidden on top of a mountain in the jungle, Machu Picchu was rediscovered in 1911 by an American archaeologist. Nobody`s really sure what it was used for as there are no records of it in the Spanish conquistadors (which is of course in part what saved it from being destroyed). We got there on one of the first buses and were there for sunrise which was beautiful. We then spent most of the day hanging about and exploring the ruins.

  • While travelling through the Altiplana of Peru I stopped at a market to buy some fruit and stretch the legs. I grabbed the camera as always. I shot about three people along the way. All I gave some banana’s beforeany calls for un solo un solo – which may not have come, but anyway. Then, and cliched as it sounds, i was stopped by these eyes. She was sat with her Grandma selling vegetables. In my disjointed Spanish/sign language – Grandma spoke little Spanish also and my Quechuan is and was next to zero – i asked to take a photo. No exchange of gifts, i offered, they didn’t want anything. A simple gentle hug and i was on my way.

  • Digital version of this stencil. The coat of arms depicts a Mexican golden eagle, perched upon a cactus, devouring a snake. The coat of arms of Mexico was inspired by an Aztec legend regarding the founding of Tenochtitlan. The Aztecs, then a nomadic tribe, were wandering throughout Mexico in search of a divine sign that would indicate the precise spot upon which they were to build their capital. Their god Huitzilopochtli had commanded them to find an eagle devouring a snake, perched atop a cactus that grew on a rock submerged in a lake. After two hundred years of wandering, they found the promised sign on a small island in the swampy Lake Texcoco. It was there they founded their new capital, Tenochtitlan.

  • inca trail
    by Gavin King

    US$26.93

  • “Machu Picchu is a pre-Columbian Inca city located at 2,430 m (7,970 ft) altitude on a mountain ridge northwest of Cusco. Machu Picchu is probably the most familiar symbol of the Inca Empire. It is often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas”. The site was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1983 when it was described as “an absolute masterpiece of architecture and a unique testimony to the Inca civilization”. Forgotten for centuries by the outside world, although not by locals, it was brought back to international attention by archaeologist Hiram Bingham in 1911, who made the first scientific confirmation of the site and wrote a best-selling work about it.” / Source: Wikipedia In this beautiful image, we can see one of the most well conserved Inca constructions at the Machu Pichhu site. The use of soft focus and sepia tone gives this image an atemporal look. This photo is a testimonial to the geniality of the Incas, and a must for anyone interested in the history of the South American civilzation.
