Sulphur crested cockatoo in flight and backlit

been reading about tribal child raising and the benefits, and we know I like birds… I began this art as abstract patterns, bubbles of pattern that transformed when I realised by putting a ‘fork in the road’ to the concentric circles, that I created an eye and beak. Before that, it could’ve been shown either way up. also, it transformed from earthy brown colours, to a colourful bird. ‘Is it art? ‘my teacher used to always question. He’s not here now. He’s just asking the question still! in my head! I like it-it’s bright, colouful and alive.

Tampa, Florida USA LARGE view – Please! This female’s babies left her nest about 3 weeks ago and she has been very anxious since. She still lives there but I havent seen the male since seeing the babies. Like humans – she’s now alone – as her work as a mother is now done. I want to address ‘empty nest syndrome’ and its impact on individuals. Empty nest syndrome is a condition that many parents feel when their children leave home or fly the nest. Empty nest syndrome is a natural condition that affects many parents – especially mothers – when their children begin to make a life without them. After almost eighteen years of caring for a child or children – the feeling of being left alone can overwhelm some parents. It did me and after over a year – I am just now coming out on the other side. I can now go into my son’s room without breaking down as long as I go in there with purpose and get the heck out! But – even as I write this I become emotional. Not over yet! Thus – I was inclined to touch on this issue in our society (The U.S) – as this phenomenon is prevelent here – but not so much in other countries. Empty nest syndrome can be a temporary feeling, but for many parents, it can lead to deeper feelings of loneliness. For some parents, bringing up children can be seen as their main role within the family. The sudden feeling of being left without a purpose can leave many parents with a sense of loss and can even lead to depression. It is important, when children leave the home, that they are aware of the void they will leave in their parent’s lives. Parents should not be ashamed or embarrassed to tell their children how much they mean to them. They should also remind their children how important the children are in their lives. Although parents should express to their children how much they will be missed, the issue should be handled sensitively. The child or children may also be nervous about leaving home, as it is a major step in their lives. They may already feel slightly guilty about leaving the family unit and should be encouraged by the parent to realize that it is one of life’s natural progressions. Empty nest syndrome will probably not be on the child’s mind, but it affects both parents and children. If only one parent is feeling the effects of empty nest syndrome, then he or she should discuss it with his or her partner, or if single, with friends. Having someone trustworthy to confide in can help a great deal when suffering from empty nest syndrome. Single parents can feel especially alone when their children eventually leave home. My son and I are best friends so naturally – he knew how badly I was suffering. I tried to hide it but it takes you over for a while. His knowing my emptiness made him feel horrid! It made him feel ‘guilty’. I wish I could have hidden it better because MY shear emptiness and lonliness ruined what was suppose to be one of the best times of his life! Empty nest syndrome affects some people more severely than others. Make sure that you make people aware of how you are feeling and that you take the time to deal with the issue! Children can always be contacted by phone or text if parents miss them! My son and I play ‘text tag’ all day – everyday! As is common with people who retire – the free time can seem overwhelming at first and this is when the empty nest syndrome can hit hardest! However, once you have adjusted, you may wonder how you previously managed to cope without the extra free time. This shot recently recieved 2nd place, out of nearly 3000 entries in a February ‘08 contest on another photosite. So now we can reveal how we did it. This is actually three separate shots of the same female Calytpe Anna hummingbird in three different positions as she hovered to approach and land on the feeder. I layered each shot over each other, aligned the feeder, masked & blended each layer to expose each bird and merged them all into one image to give the appearance of three separate hummingbirds lined up at the feeder. Work done with Corel PSP-XI

This wild sparrow was quite tame. Taken at Auckland Domain where everyone spends their summer days feeding the birds – ducks, geese, pigeons, sparrows! I made my daughter hold out some bread so i could practise photographing birds in flight. It was really hard, and of 100 photos I took like this, only 2 turned out. Going back next week for more practise :)

Whilst roaming around a local dam early one morning looking for a winning shot, I noticed a family of sea eagles busily on the move hunting for breakfast, so I spent an hour or so waving my biggest lens around the sky in avid pursuit. I caught a movement in the corner of my eye and swung the lens to grab a couple of fast shots of this juvenile sea eagle swooping in for the kill at a great rate of knots and luckily one was a keeper. Considering the shutter speed of 1/80th sec., I was quite happy to get it.
