Another photomontage of images I found around the web (links below). I wanted to create an image reminiscent of Baz Lurhmann’s “Romeo & Juliet” movie imagery. This portrait worked well with the religious imagery – I didn’t want anything obvious. This type of imagery is very powerful to me, but not for religious reasons. I just find it perfectly encapsulates the American-Hispanic passion and culture – the juxtaposition of fierce faith and violence (much like Lurhmann’s film actually). / / / /

From my collection Heaven In It’s Midst The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Fairbanks Alaska Winter Panorama digital Charcoal / This is a composite of three of my images stitched into a portrait Panorama converted to Charcoal, a Time Machine aging application and an added Gold Filter ~ “Fairbanks’ first Catholic community at Immaculate Conception is historically juxtaposed with the frenetic gold discovery on the nearby creeks in 1902 and the arrival of indefatigable pioneer, Fr. Francis Monroe, S.J., in 1904. Almost immediately after his arrival from Eagle, he began building the first Catholic church in the Fairbanks area followed by a much needed hospital. While accomplishing his building projects and ministering to miners and their families, Fr. Monroe managed to recruit Sisters to staff the hospital. Fr. Monroe’s church was originally built on the corner of First Avenue and Dunkel Street located on the south bank of the Chena River. After a few years, he decided that it was best to have the church situated closer to newly opened Saint Joseph hospital. In the winter of 1911, when freeze-up had arrived and the river ice was thick enough, Fr. Monroe hired a team of horses and men to move the church building. The crew, using skids, slid the church building across the ice to its new location on north bank of the Chena River where Immaculate Conception Church now stands. In 1951, three years after Francis Gleeson, S.J., became Bishop, Alaska was divided into separate church administrative entities. In 1962, the Mission areas of the North was raised to the status of Diocese. Immaculate Conception Church became the Cathedral of the North and remained so until 1966 when Sacred Heart Cathedral was built to accommodate a growing congregation. Immaculate Conception Church grew as a vibrant Catholic community and has continued under the direction of the Society of Jesus who still serve at the “Little Church,” as it is unofficially known. A few Jesuits mentioned here are representative of those who served during Immaculate Conception’s almost one century existence. Fr. Filiberto Tornielli, a contemporary of Fr. Monroe, was pastor from 1927 to 1932. He was related to both a Saint and a Pope, that is, Blessed Bonaventura Tornielli and Pope Gregory XVI. Another was Fr. Patrick O’Reilly who served during the late 1930’s. It is to his credit that Immaculate Conception Church has its beautiful stained glass windows. Of interest, the first diocesan priest of the diocese was ordained at Immaculate Conception in 1965. He was Fr. Angus McDonald who was ordained by Bishop Gleeson. At Fr. McDonald’s ordination, Bishop Gleeson used English for the Rite of Holy Orders instead of Latin, a first in the history of the church in the United States. On April 3, 1976, Immaculate Conception Church was listed on the National Registry of Historical Sites.
This statue of the Madonna stands immortalized in her traditional pose, welcoming the masses into the beautiful Immaculate Conception Church of Harbour Grace. The Church of the Immaculate Conception that sits on the waterfront in modern times is actually the second place of worship to be consecrated on the hallowed ground. The first was a cathedral that was completed in 1870 but was lost in a fire in 1889. The replacement was completed and consecrated on November 8th, 1899. The church is currently undergoing repairs to preserve this important part of Harbour Grace. Please visit the Harbour Grace official website for more information about this scenic piece of Newfoundland history.
Photo I captured of a sculpture outside Sacred Heart Cathedral (Charleston, WV). It is actually Mary (mother of Jesus) turning away in fear from Gabriel after having seen him for the first time. The look on her face is absolutely haunting. Enjoy! Thank you for visiting our page - Comments are always welcome. Cheers! Chad Miller

The town of Cospicua (known as Bormla in Maltese) lies close to the dockyard, which still is one of the more important contributors to the Maltese economy. They celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception in this town on the 8th December; this is one of the incredibly ornate and colourful statuess and plinths which decorate the streets at this time, bringing a welcome touch of colour to the rather drab, industrial background. Featured in Miniatures and Mammoths – January 29, 2009 Located in Cook’s Creek, Manitoba, Canada. Photographed with Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT / Construction of this church began in l930. The exterior painting and elaborate interior decoration, mainly by local amateur artists, began in l938 when the structure was completed. This work was well advanced in l952 when the church was consecrated. The design is the work of the Very Reverend Philip Ruh, O.M.I. (l883–l962). He was responsible for planning at least 30 Ukrainian Catholic churches in Canada, l3 of which survive in Manitoba. Reverend Ruh worked alongside his congregation at Cooks Creek in building this church, the largest of his remaining creations in Manitoba. Reverend Ruh also foresaw construction of the adjoining Grotto, a representation in concrete of the Grotto at Lourdes, France. He died before its completion and is buried in the nearby cemetery. / (http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/hrb/plaques/plaq1241.html) /
