  • Introducing Lars: hand drawn type queen
    by Natalie Tyler

I recently had a chat with Lars for the t-shirt blog and I thought that seeing as she’s such a talent, I’d whip up a journal so I could share the interview with those who may not have caught it. Lars stuns me again and again with her hand drawn type skills and quirky illustration style. We have featured her you, me, we t-shirt before on the blog and recently she took the top spot in the hand drawn typography competition with her pretty lady tee. I asked Lars if she would mind giving us some insight into what makes her tick and just how she became such a talented individual. Good news for us. She said yes! / / / / / / Which of your tees are you most proud of? “Prism Party”, I love pastel colours and I’m a fan of slightly nerdy mathematical things & also “Lost your pen?” because I just think its cute, and slightly sad, I feel the plain of it! How long do you usually spend on a design? Two hours at the most, it takes me awhile because I don’t have any nifty gadgets like a Wacom, I have to draw things up, scan, photoshop it, print it, then fix things… and so on, which gets frustrating, i tend to lose motivation half way through. How do you motivate yourself? As soon as I wake up I drink Chai Tea and It just wakes me up and makes me want to design and do all sorts of things, id say it gives me superpowers. Were you a creative kid? If so, what’s your earliest creative memory? Yeh, very creative, a lot more creative than I am now! I used to enter all the competitions in the Sunday Telegraph and go to Art Camps, I won so much stuff, the best thing I ever won was 100 boxes of The Simpsons Instant Macaroni, I can still taste it. What creative skill would you most like to have? I would love to be able to draw well, all my drawings are more like primary school scribbles rather than illustrations, so im thinking of taking some drawing classes What’s your pet design/illustration hate? Seeing people post “designs” that look like they were pasted together on paint. And these days im getting a bit tired of seeing polaroid inspired things, don’t get me wrong I love them, I have my own stash, but its become SO popular that in my eyes its lost its novelty and its sense of nostalgia. If you could pick one person to have as a mentor, who would it be? Reg Mombassa would be fun just because he is such an icon here in Australia, and he has a sense of humor in his art. Any advice for aspiring illustrators or designers? If you are having creative block… just do whatever first comes into your head, doesn’t matter if its silly. And everything around you can be inspiration! Sounds like good advice to me. A big thanks to Lars for the chat. We can’t wait to see more of her work on the bubble soon!

Phew!! Finished all my work just in time to enjoy Drawing Day!!! Yay!!! Here is my drawing for the day… / But drawing day shouldn’t stop at the end of today. • Adobe Illustrator T-Shirt Template Download

I’m relatively new to Illustrator and wanted to take advantage of the templates facility so after a few iterations I now have a template that works for me. I’ll assume that anyone reading this is at least familiar with the main options windows and how to work with Stroke/fill colours etc – if not just post a comment and I’ll try and help. If you’re looking for a Photoshop template then maybe try this one I know a lot of people use Illustrator to create T-shirt designs then copy and paste their finished image into Photoshop to do the save to .png and upload to Redbubble. I found very early on that although you get warnings about memory and untold slowness when you do ‘Save for Web’ – that’s the way to go to avoid having to leave Illustrator. OK – so what’s in the template? The artboard is set to the standard 2400px X 3200px that we all know and love There’s a ‘design’ layer – ready to accommodate your actual design Beneath that there’s a ‘Background’ layer with a compound shape (in the shape) of a T-shirt. This is primarily so you can try out different background colours for your design before you upload. I originally just had a rectangle in the shape of the artboard, but this is intended to match the view (approximately) you’ll get within Redbubble. There’s also swatches for all the different shirt colours (available separately as a Swatch Exchange file) that appear at the bottom of the swatches window. If you hover over each you’ll notice they’re called ‘RB ….’ just to make it a bit more obvious. Using the template First of all Download it from my site and extract to your illustrator program path\Cool Extras\Templates (on windows – c:\program files\adobe\Adobe Illustrator… In Illustrator go File—> New From Template… and choose your saved Redbubble T-Shirt Template. Complete your design in the ‘Design’ layer (or any layer above ‘Background’) To see different backgrounds simply select the ‘T-Background’ group in the layers window (click the circle) this should select all the paths in the ‘T-Shirt’ shape. Go to the Tools window and make sure the Stroke colour is set to black and click the Fill colour to bring that to the foreground. Now just click away on your RB shirt swatches and preview your design set against all the glorious RB colours. Once you’re happy then make the ‘T-Background’ group invisible (so you have a transparent background) and do the following to make the design ready for Redbubble: Click File—> Save for Web… (you’ll get a message about ‘how the world’s going to end’) – be brave and click ‘Yes’ to continue – if you’re running illustrator OK you’ve probably got plenty of memory. In the ‘preset’ on the right hand side make sure you’ve selected ‘PNG-24’, and that ‘transparency’ is set. In the tabs underneath that click ‘Image Size’ and leave all the settings and tick ‘Clip to artboard’. Your image size will now go down to 2400 X 3200. Save, upload and put your feet up :) I’m sure there’s a neater way to achieve the ‘fillable’ T-Shirt shape without having to select multiple paths (maybe a transparent image) – so if anyone’s got any tips then I’d be more than happy to hear them. • I have been playing with this design for a while to get a nice smooth looking design as the scan of my ink illustration was a bit scratchy. In the end I used the program inkscape to convert it to a vector. I wish I still had Corel Draw/ Paint. I used it for quite a while until it was second nature but I lost the cd when I moved a while back . . . sigh

A quick and easy addition to your Photoshop or Illustrator setup. Here’s a Swatch Exchange file that you can add to either Photoshop or Illustrator with all the Redbubble T-Shirt colours. If you use Illustrator then you can just use my Illustrator Template – as that’s already got the swatches added. How to Install Download it from my site and extract to either your Photoshop presets\Color Swatches folder, or Illustrator presets\swatches folder. It’s not essential but easier to remember if it’s where the app looks for swatches. To import into Photoshop go to the swatches window and in the flyout menu select ‘Load Swatches’ and select ‘Swatch Exchange (*.ASE)’ as the file type. To import into Illustrator do ‘Open Swatch Library’ from the swatches window instead The colours will appear in your swatches all named ‘RB ….’
