I’ve been keeping a close eye on the featured and popular pages on Red Bubble, and wondering where all the painters, illustrators and graphic artists are?! There are some AMAZING artists working in these media on the site, but it just seems like they’re all being lost in the system. I have nothing against photography or the photographers, but it’d be nice to see a more even spread. So – do your bit! Upload your best painting, illustrative or graphic pieces Seek out painted and illustrated works Comment, fave and watch! The popular algorithm is a closely guarded Red Bubble secret, however I’m sure doing the above things can help boost painting and illustration on this site. I know we can all help bring attention to the amazing artists on this site who deserve to have a little light shone on them! I will go through my own watch list and select and feature artists who I think deserve to be a little more popular. I have sent in my request to have an Illustration group on RB, and Kathleen emailed me back a few days later and said that many people had requested the same thing and that they were nutting out a plan for launching such a group. I really can’t wait, I do think a group dedicated to illustrators might be the shot in the arm needed for illustrative artists. If you’re with me, let me know!! Spread the word! (I have submitted this to a few groups, please let me know if this is appropriate – because I think it is, and highly beneficial to us all!!)

I’ve been madly thumping away in my vector shop of late. The latest little creation is this horned beauty … I whipped it up for the Tooheys TED696 competition. They are about to launch their new 696 ml long neck, and they want artists to create an arty paper bag for it. If you get a chance, all you need do is go to the “Gallery” section, slide the little green slider to “I’m digging it” and hit “Submit vote”. You don’t even have to register. They’ve commissioned one of my favourite artists, Shepard Fairey (of OBEY Giant fame), so in the unlikely event it wins, I will be in very good company indeed.

  • support your favourite illustrators on drawing day

Howdy all, This Saturday is Drawing Day and I’ve been having a think about a few ways we can show our appreciation for the use of pen, pencil, pastel, ink etc. So here’s an idea. On Saturday, why not pledge to leave at least one comment on an illustration piece and favourite at least one sketch or scribble. Whether it’s a pen and ink portrait, a masterpiece in marker, a quick sketch or some show off who owns one of those wacom tablets – it all counts, so make the effort to hunt down some of the drawing talent and let them know you like their style. If this sounds like hard work then I’ve made it easier for you by putting together a little gallery below of some of my favourites which I’m going to keep adding to over the next few days. Check their favourites and I’m sure you’ll find even more. Alternatively, leave a comment below with your recommendations and we can all join in on the quest to support the illustrating talent on the bubble. Share the love. (Virtually) hug an illustrator on Drawing Day 2008. Nat :) / / / /

  • Are you a vector fiend?
    by Natalie Perkins

I have just been browsing “Coudal Partn…

I have just been browsing Coudal Partners’ Layer Tennis. Matches consist of a ten volley round of vector tennis between two graphic artists. It got me to thinking – sure, none of us is a Veerle Peters or an Armin Vit (yet) but why don’t we give it a crack? Guidelines (you know what pirates say about guidelines) Players must use illustrator Matches take place with two players Each match consists of ten rounds Each volley must use an element from the previous player’s volley (unless it is the first volley, where the first player to volley gets to “set the scene”) All volleys must use original work (no stock photos or vectors) Players must wear those tennis socks with a bobble at the heel Questions / Are you up for it? Do you have any ideas where we could host this marvellous (yet friendly) competition? How long should each artist get for a “volley”? Do you think Coudal Partners would sue us for using the term “Layer Tennis”? Can you think up a better name? / How about this for five minute’s work? It’s nerdy, makes me giggle and illustrates the idea of the “volleying” involved without ripping off the original title!

Sometimes I doodle just for the hell of it, and there are a lot of times that I produce things that are kind of cool that I could never sell as prints. For example: lately I have taken to defacing my magazines – it’s a way to reuse paper, and often the paper stock is quite lovely to draw on (Frankie in particular!) Enjoy :D

An editor has a few spare minutes to pursue her slush pile. She’s got 50-plus submissions on her shelf. She pulls out yours. You have about five seconds to make her want to read your letter and view your work. Keep these tips in mind when sending illustration submissions: / - Spend time getting the person’s name and title correct. / Visit your local library or book shop, the imprint page lists names and addresses of publishers. Or (for Australians) join the Australian Society of Authors, they publish a book each year listing most Australian publishers (names of the art directors, editors etc). Even with all this information I still find myself calling the publishers to get the Mrs, Miss or Ms correct. It’s time consuming but if you get this detail right, you’ll make a positive first impression. - Type your letter, no hand written notes. / - Follow submission guidelines. Most publishers post these up on their individual websites. - Hi quality printouts are generally good quality A4 colour prints from Fuji Xerox printers. The For an A4 sized scan 240 DPI perfect. Photo printouts are also good but I find they are heavy, bulky and more expensive to printout and post. I generally have two mailouts on hand: the first mailout is to all publishers. / - A summary A4 sheet showing 6-8 pieces of my illustration work. I send my sample sheet along with a cover letter (no more than 1 page long). With this submission I include a stamped self addressed envelope to encourage any kind of response. The publishers that get back to me with a positive responses are the ones that I would send regular updates of my work (every six months). - The second mail out is your full (or only a section of) your portfolio of (8-12 pieces) showing one illustration per A4 page. Updates to my portfolio are formatted in exactly the same style as the original portfolio. be careful to only send what would be appropriate to that particular publisher. - All A4 portfolio sheets must have your contact and artwork details (art medium, size, title published, unpublished etc.) in the bottom right-hand corner (very similar to the RedBubble portfolio page layout). - Include your web (or RedBubble) address for publishers to view more of your work. I set up a Horizontal A4 template in Indesign (a graphics program that converts pages to a PDF format). Show only one distinctive style. Showing realistic alongside caricature, woodcuts, alongside watercolour will confuse your ‘brand’. Your style is your trademark, if you keep changing it, it will lose its impact.

  • Looking for some advice for a kid's book

Hey all, I’m looking to illustrate a kid’s book.. a Monster ABC. I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and originally I was planning on doing the art in my usual vector style eg. Clive the Bunyip However, while as an adult I do love the clean lines and bright colours vector art gives me, I know kids books in general tend more towards the texture and visual richness of traditional art styles, paint and pencil and the like. My latest illustration, as well as being an entry into the Drawing Day challenge, was a chance for me to experiment with a more painterly style. A friend suggested that the painted work is more warm and friendly, and would be a better style for kids. The downside is it’s very new to me, so I’ll have to learn techniques and try to improve as I go. That illustration was done very quickly while our baby was sleeping, so it’s a bit messier than I’d be looking at anyway. So here is my question. Which style is better? The vector art is good because it’s bright, and I’m comfortable with the style – the work will be more polished and cleaner. The painted style has greater depth and warmth to it, although it’s not as finished and I would need to learn a lot as I go. Or I could do something in between.. clean vector lines like ink with painted colours for the texture. What do you think?

  • What is the Game of Kings?
    by GameOfKings

The Game of Kings is a collaboration bringing together Red Bubble artists from Australia and the UK. Initially starting out as a series of character-based t-shirts, GoK has expanded to include an accompanying narrative and will be spinning out into other media. The basic theme of the project is the game of chess. The initial brief was that the project’s creator, Simon Sherry, would illustrate the black side of the board, while a team of eight other artists would tackle the white. As the project gathered momentum and the members of the group shared ideas and artwork, a story began to evolve around the pieces in this celestial battleground. With the addition of Danny to the group as ‘biographer’ of this strange cast of characters, this story took on a life of its own, and everyone involved knew that the scope of the Game had grown beyond the cotton canvas. Due to the clever skills and imagination of those involved and the epic scope of the theme, the GoK group are creating a wonderful series of artworks, stories and multimedia to hopefully fire the imagination in others. The first ‘phase’ of this project are the character tees making up the board itself. Every two weeks four pieces of the board will be revealed along with a section of the story, adding another piece of the jigsaw to build a final picture. Accompanying the artwork and writing will be interviews with the people involved, adding further insight into the project, their role in it, and the thought behind their creations. Every other week, previews for the next ‘wave’ of characters will be released, along with other behind-the-scenes material to whet appetites for what’s in store. A blog, facebook page and twitter account is also online, providing fans with updates and additional extras that may not appear in the main Red Bubble profile. The Game of Kings Group on Red Bubble will open its doors in the future to accept members who want to contribute ideas, stories and art as well as compete in competitions that will stretch the boundaries of fun and excitement with prizes worth the effort. The Game of Kings is more than Tee Shirts. It’s wall art and animated story lines, vignettes and artist clashing styles against each other. It’s books and games. It’s audience participation and contribution. It’s something that we hope you can watch grow and enjoy as a whole new world opens up before your eyes in the next few months and beyond. We hope you enjoy the ride! - The GoK Team The GoK team is: Simon Sherry / Scott Robinson / thickblackoutline / rubyred / sjem / quigonjim / Jordan Clarke / Nofrillsart / LilyM / Danny

  • Game Of Kings Artist Interview: Jordan Clarke
    by GameOfKings

*Jordan Clarke is another member of the Game of Kings collaboration. / Jordan is almost a f…

Jordan Clarke is another member of the Game of Kings collaboration. / Jordan is almost a foundation member of Red Bubble coming aboard in the very early days. Her style of Graphic design is both eye catching and original and was a perfect choice for the myriad of styles that make up the mix that is Game of Kings Thanks for this Jordan, could you start by telling us a little about yourself ? / No worries! Well, I finished studying graphic design back in 2006. It was a great course and I met some amazing people – but by the end I realised that I didn’t really want to be a graphic designer. I’d stared experimenting with graphic illustration in the last few weeks of the course – something just clicked and I knew I’d found my direction. / Now I’m trying to combine traditional techniques with digital – I’m not sure where I fit in yet – but I’m loving the whole process. I’m also working on some new tee designs which I have big plans for. One day I hope I can make a comfortable living out of my artwork! Which artists influence or inspire you? / My two all time favourites are Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman. I love Kahlo’s bold, colourful and emotionally raw paintings. Sherman’s self-portrait photos have really cool themes and I love that she does it all herself. / More recently I’ve been really influenced by Shepard Fairey – his work has made me think about my own early work and how I can push it to the next level through screen-prints and stencils. I’m also influenced by Gil Elvgren’s quintessential pin-ups – especially seeing some of the original photos he used to reference. And of course I’m hugely influenced and inspired by tattoo art and digital collage (which is evident in my portfolio!). How did you get involved with Game of Kings? / Simon got in contact and told me about his idea. I’ve never been involved in any collaboration so I was keen initially for that reason. But when I understood the scope and possibility of Simon’s idea I was even more excited about joining the fun. I was totally surprised to be asked – especially when I saw who the other artists were. I knew I’d have to really bring it to the table and put in my best work, which was exciting. What’s been your experience being part of the project to date, and how do think it will be received? / I’ve been really surprised at the sense of camaraderie between all the artists, helping each other as we’ve developed our work. It’s set a high benchmark for future collaborations! The development has flowed really easily and the quality of work is phenomenal. I’m confident that people will receive it really well – we’re keeping our releases small so it’s easier for everyone to take it all in! How much have you enjoyed creating your characters – have they been fun/interesting/tricky for any reason? / It’s been quite challenging for me to execute the creation of my characters. The idea is the easy part! I’ve really enjoyed researching mythological creatures and seeing how I can work them into the character piece. I can get a bit carried away with the concept – to the point where I’m not sure if I can live up to the image in my head! / This collaboration has definitely helped me develop my artistic skills – trying new techniques and taking more risks. It’s easy to get stuck in your comfort zone, so I’m grateful for the challenge. Is there anything else you’d like to add? / I have to thank Simon and his genius for this awesome idea and for inviting me to participate. Huge thanks also to the team for all the advice, critique and encouragement – you made it a wicked experience. I can’t wait to see the GOK characters on the streets soon! (Oh, and we’ll be back my friends. This is only the beginning…)

  • The Game of Kings, Phase One – The Half-Time Report.
    by Simon Sherry

*Well, we’ve just begun releasing wave five of the Game of Kings …

Well, we’ve just begun releasing wave five of the Game of Kings project, and as we’ve officially reached the halfway point of this phase, I thought it would be a good idea to offer a bit of a recap of events so far. / At this point, we have released 18 of the 32 characters that make up the pieces in this cosmic conflict, with nine of each side of the board revealed (click on any of the pics below to view their character tee): / / / / / There’s a lot of story work going into the project, and if you haven’t taken a look you’re missing out! From the prelude to the contest through to the introduction of the players and hints of dissent within the ranks, the board is being set for conflicts between and within. Look for further hints as to the true allegiances of some of the pieces over the coming weeks as the rest of the board is revealed. / So far, we’ve had interviews with the following members of the group: Simon Sherry / Quigonjim / Rubyred / thickblackoutline / Jordan Clarke / nofrillsart Scott Robinson has lent some insight into the collaborative process with his journal on the creation of the White King’s Pawn and the group has outlined some of the future plans for the project. We’ve also been reguarly providing updates on the project via the GoK blog, facebook group and twitter feed. Our resident animator and tale-teller, Danny Nolan , has also tapped into the spirit of 60’s Marvel comic animation by way of the roaming essence of Terry Gilliam to create a myriad of animated vignettes adding to the overall flavour of the series. Big things are afoot for the project as we move into the second half of Phase One, with more stunning character artwork, behind the scenes info, added narrative content and a glimpse at what’s in store once the board is set. We hope you’ve enjoyed the ride so far, and strongly suggest you tighten your seatbelts for the next few laps. The Game itself is yet to begin. - Simon Sherry

I’ve been meaning to share this tutorial from Go Media for ages. It covers, in detail, how to transform your sketches and drawings to into slick linework using photoshop and illustrator. It’s one of the best, most comprehensive guides I think I’ve ever seen. It covers all the ‘I wonder how I do that bit’ questions like: 1. Sketching – How detailed to get in your sketch / 2. What resolution to scan your sketch / 3. How to set up your Illustrator file / 4. Tips and techniques for digitally inking your sketch using vector lines / 5. Tips and techniques for coloring your vector illustration Thought someone might find it handy …

illustration – information provided by wikipedia:

An illustration is a visualization such as a drawing, painting, photograph or other work of art that stresses subject more than form. The aim of an illustration is to elucidate or decorate a story, poem or piece of textual information (such as a newspaper article), traditionally by providing a visual representation of something described in the text.
