An editor has a few spare minutes to pursue her slush pile. She’s got 50-plus submissions on her shelf. She pulls out yours. You have about five seconds to make her want to read your letter and view your work. Keep these tips in mind when sending illustration submissions: / - Spend time getting the person’s name and title correct. / Visit your local library or book shop, the imprint page lists names and addresses of publishers. Or (for Australians) join the Australian Society of Authors, they publish a book each year listing most Australian publishers (names of the art directors, editors etc). Even with all this information I still find myself calling the publishers to get the Mrs, Miss or Ms correct. It’s time consuming but if you get this detail right, you’ll make a positive first impression. - Type your letter, no hand written notes. / - Follow submission guidelines. Most publishers post these up on their individual websites. - Hi quality printouts are generally good quality A4 colour prints from Fuji Xerox printers. The For an A4 sized scan 240 DPI perfect. Photo printouts are also good but I find they are heavy, bulky and more expensive to printout and post. I generally have two mailouts on hand: the first mailout is to all publishers. / - A summary A4 sheet showing 6-8 pieces of my illustration work. I send my sample sheet along with a cover letter (no more than 1 page long). With this submission I include a stamped self addressed envelope to encourage any kind of response. The publishers that get back to me with a positive responses are the ones that I would send regular updates of my work (every six months). - The second mail out is your full (or only a section of) your portfolio of (8-12 pieces) showing one illustration per A4 page. Updates to my portfolio are formatted in exactly the same style as the original portfolio. be careful to only send what would be appropriate to that particular publisher. - All A4 portfolio sheets must have your contact and artwork details (art medium, size, title published, unpublished etc.) in the bottom right-hand corner (very similar to the RedBubble portfolio page layout). - Include your web (or RedBubble) address for publishers to view more of your work. I set up a Horizontal A4 template in Indesign (a graphics program that converts pages to a PDF format). Show only one distinctive style. Showing realistic alongside caricature, woodcuts, alongside watercolour will confuse your ‘brand’. Your style is your trademark, if you keep changing it, it will lose its impact.

  • Are you a vector fiend?
    by Natalie Perkins

I have just been browsing “Coudal Partn…

I have just been browsing Coudal Partners’ Layer Tennis. Matches consist of a ten volley round of vector tennis between two graphic artists. It got me to thinking – sure, none of us is a Veerle Peters or an Armin Vit (yet) but why don’t we give it a crack? Guidelines (you know what pirates say about guidelines) Players must use illustrator Matches take place with two players Each match consists of ten rounds Each volley must use an element from the previous player’s volley (unless it is the first volley, where the first player to volley gets to “set the scene”) All volleys must use original work (no stock photos or vectors) Players must wear those tennis socks with a bobble at the heel Questions / Are you up for it? Do you have any ideas where we could host this marvellous (yet friendly) competition? How long should each artist get for a “volley”? Do you think Coudal Partners would sue us for using the term “Layer Tennis”? Can you think up a better name? / How about this for five minute’s work? It’s nerdy, makes me giggle and illustrates the idea of the “volleying” involved without ripping off the original title!

I’ve been keeping a close eye on the featured and popular pages on Red Bubble, and wondering where all the painters, illustrators and graphic artists are?! There are some AMAZING artists working in these media on the site, but it just seems like they’re all being lost in the system. I have nothing against photography or the photographers, but it’d be nice to see a more even spread. So – do your bit! Upload your best painting, illustrative or graphic pieces Seek out painted and illustrated works Comment, fave and watch! The popular algorithm is a closely guarded Red Bubble secret, however I’m sure doing the above things can help boost painting and illustration on this site. I know we can all help bring attention to the amazing artists on this site who deserve to have a little light shone on them! I will go through my own watch list and select and feature artists who I think deserve to be a little more popular. I have sent in my request to have an Illustration group on RB, and Kathleen emailed me back a few days later and said that many people had requested the same thing and that they were nutting out a plan for launching such a group. I really can’t wait, I do think a group dedicated to illustrators might be the shot in the arm needed for illustrative artists. If you’re with me, let me know!! Spread the word! (I have submitted this to a few groups, please let me know if this is appropriate – because I think it is, and highly beneficial to us all!!)

I’ve been madly thumping away in my vector shop of late. The latest little creation is this horned beauty … I whipped it up for the Tooheys TED696 competition. They are about to launch their new 696 ml long neck, and they want artists to create an arty paper bag for it. If you get a chance, all you need do is go to the “Gallery” section, slide the little green slider to “I’m digging it” and hit “Submit vote”. You don’t even have to register. They’ve commissioned one of my favourite artists, Shepard Fairey (of OBEY Giant fame), so in the unlikely event it wins, I will be in very good company indeed.

Hey all, I’m looking to illustrate a kid’s book.. a Monster ABC. I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and originally I was planning on doing the art in my usual vector style eg. Clive the Bunyip However, while as an adult I do love the clean lines and bright colours vector art gives me, I know kids books in general tend more towards the texture and visual richness of traditional art styles, paint and pencil and the like. My latest illustration, as well as being an entry into the Drawing Day challenge, was a chance for me to experiment with a more painterly style. A friend suggested that the painted work is more warm and friendly, and would be a better style for kids. The downside is it’s very new to me, so I’ll have to learn techniques and try to improve as I go. That illustration was done very quickly while our baby was sleeping, so it’s a bit messier than I’d be looking at anyway. So here is my question. Which style is better? The vector art is good because it’s bright, and I’m comfortable with the style – the work will be more polished and cleaner. The painted style has greater depth and warmth to it, although it’s not as finished and I would need to learn a lot as I go. Or I could do something in between.. clean vector lines like ink with painted colours for the texture. What do you think?

Howdy all, This Saturday is Drawing Day and I’ve been having a think about a few ways we can show our appreciation for the use of pen, pencil, pastel, ink etc. So here’s an idea. On Saturday, why not pledge to leave at least one comment on an illustration piece and favourite at least one sketch or scribble. Whether it’s a pen and ink portrait, a masterpiece in marker, a quick sketch or some show off who owns one of those wacom tablets – it all counts, so make the effort to hunt down some of the drawing talent and let them know you like their style. If this sounds like hard work then I’ve made it easier for you by putting together a little gallery below of some of my favourites which I’m going to keep adding to over the next few days. Check their favourites and I’m sure you’ll find even more. Alternatively, leave a comment below with your recommendations and we can all join in on the quest to support the illustrating talent on the bubble. Share the love. (Virtually) hug an illustrator on Drawing Day 2008. Nat :) / / / /

  • My Interview With Rubyred!
    by yanmos

“Creativity” talks with Rubyred! / ...

“Creativity” talks with Rubyred! / How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? / As well as being a creative person by nature, I’m employed to be creative. I work as Head of Graphic Design for an international publishing and events company. I’ve worked as a graphic designer for over fifteen years and as most arty types would tell you, you can go through periods where you feel drained of any sense of creativity and end up just going through the motions. I was going through one of those periods when I stumbled upon RedBubble. Joining and participating in the Bubble community has given me back the enthusiasm for design and creativity. I have renewed energy at work and my projects are benefiting because of it. In terms of other aspects of my life, I’ve started to see a wider picture. I’ll look at global issues in more detail than before, to see if I can represent graphically a particular issue whether it’s oil, war or the Beijing Olympics for example. I like to involve my two young children with art projects as a way of them expressing themselves. Kids can have a lot of distractions these days and being able to sit down with them ‘sticking and making’ gives me and them, a lot of pleasure. It’s a cliché but the simplest things are often the best and that often applies to design. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful / I find it hard to point at one person, or even one moment. But, when I uploaded one of my earliest and currently most popular t-shirts to RedBubble (Winds Of Change), the response was fantastic. The comments I received really lifted me and gave me a needed confidence boost. The fact that you can reach a huge audience of like minded people through one website is amazing and I thank everybody who spares the time to view, comment, favourite and purchase my work. Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you / In no particular order, here goes: / Environmental Footprint by nofrillsart. / / I could pick many pieces from Glen’s folio, in fact, I often check his pages before I start work on a new piece because a few times recently I’ve come up with a great idea only to discover Glen was there long before me. He has a very sharp creative mind that is well worth checking out. / Binalong Avenue by Danny. / I discovered this when Cathie Tranent listed it as one of her 5 favourite pieces in her interview. It’s a very moving piece of writing. / The Geisha Tea Party by thickblackoutline. / / An epic piece of illustration greatness, the details just keep coming and coming. / Clepsydra by Yanmos. / / I know it’s one of yours Yannis, but I do like people who have a strong consistent style, and you certainly have that. / Oil Kills by Frank Stillitano. / / A great piece of bold, powerful and meaningful graphic design – just what I like! I could have listed so many more, apologies to everyone I missed. The quality of most of the artists and work on this site continues to impress and inspire me. Thanks to RedBubble for providing the vehicle and long may the journey continue. Thank you very much Roger for your time! / Jo O’Brien ’s idea Mission Share The Love

Hello everyone! Welcome to my first journal entry… I’m putting up some new drawings that I did whilst reading and thoroughly enjoying the book Wicked by Gregory Maguire. For anyone who hasn’t read it it is essentially a re-imagined back story to L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. We get to see how Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, came to be considered evil. The book really got to me. I love that Gregory Maguire has turned the once quite one-dimensional characters from L. Frank Baum’s classic tale into fully rounded entities with realistic desires, flaws and past experiences that have shaped them. For anyone interested in books that don’t merely separate the world into good/bad black/white piles then I recommend this. It’s gritty, funny and so visually descriptive that I had no choice but to dust off my visual diary and create some sketches of my own. I’m putting up seven of these sketches that turned out okay. The six illustrations in the book itself, by Douglas Smith, are really lovely so I recommend taking a look at them – my drawings in no way compare! / The book has also been turned into a musical. I doubt that the stage version will have the punch that the book has but I have my ticket for when it arrives in Melbourne anyway. Fingers crossed it’s not too horrendous. Next I must thank my dear friends Sylvia Karall and Monica Rutherford for letting me use their scanner, feeding me, making me feel wanted and for helping me with my general computer illiteracy. I would not be on this site without you!!! They’re also both very talented. Here’s the link to artwork by Sylvia Karall / As well as the jewellery of Monica Rutherford / Enjoy! One last thing, I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who comments on my work and sends me messages. I appreciate it immensely. / I hope you enjoy the new pictures everybody and there will be more coming soon. Love Paul

Friday theme day today is for the traditionalists – those who work with just pen, ink and imagination. Illustration is the oldest form of art – we can find examples on cave walls from 40,000 plus years ago. Today on RedBubble it has come a bit further. But the essence of the art is the same – showing us a new world by highlighting some specific elements of importance to the artists. Illustration, whether beautifully simple of fiendishly complex, connects us directly with the artist as we see the flow of their hand across the paper.

  • Hi Kids, As this is such an epic piece, and took me a few weeks to complete, I thought I’d put a bit of an explanation about it here. It’s all almost like a bit of a “best of TBO” with all your fav Geishas at a Tea Party, along the lines of the Original Tea Party I’ve redone 7 geishas for this, which are, (in no particular order): Osaka Nights / Yakuza Babe / Bloody Mary (my fav) / Phoenix / Frosti / Marymary (The Gardener) / Tea Geisha (“remixed” a few times now, she was half done in the first place) / Enjoy Kids!! (phew) Go back to The Geisha Tea Party Much Love, /

Im posting this out here (and to the universe) to send me a place..a course..a teacher.. a something (!) so that i can really LEARN..fine tune what i know..go further, with 100% commitment…willing to pay money even, about these three subjects: Advancing my self taught knowledge of Photoshop Learn/study Illustrator Immerse & LEARN into the technical aspects of Digital Photography (cuz at the moment its ALL instincts, luck & a lots of try & wing’in it) Can anyone recommend short courses available in Melbourne? A good teacher? I now have the time and some $$ to finally give 100% to myself (no more stayhome-single mum of four kids and occassion to put my needs in the backburner!) and would really like to learn/do all the things ive wanted to do for like, 23yrs now.. when i look at job vacancies..i dont feel like i have a chance in any of them, cuz of the job/software requirements – sometimes i dont even fully understand the sentence/job terms! Haha.. I am all self taught, and i dont know what i know, if that makes sense… Ive always been the type to take on projects/jobs by instinct and wing-it, learn as i go, jump in with both feet..to get whatever that needs to be done. And 99.9% of the time, ive done it :) quite well..if i may say so, myself :P so now..ive got no more ‘dependants’ and its time to look after me! ive done some courses before, and theres a lot of courses out there that put me to sleep..especially tafe/community type ones.. Thats prob more cuz im self taught, and maybe i should be in the ‘advanced’ course..but cuz i dont have a beginner ‘certificate’ or anything.. Ive always had start with the Beginners course. I am planning to apply for NEIS and hopefully start that early Sept. But i still want to fine tune my skills, knowledge AND also start mixing with people of same interest, aims.. The self is made, not given. It is a creative and active process of attending a life that must be heard, shaped, seen, said aloud into the world, finally enacted and woven into the lives of others. / —Barbara Myerhoff /

I’ve been listening to this incredible DJ set for about 2 weeks solid and I only just got the idea from Ushna to tell you all about it. The artist is Whyte Oktober / and I know him a long time because he’s my brother. / You can listen to it here / And its absolutely incredible, I’m not just saying that because we share DNA, something has to be pretty exceptional before I’ll listen to it and this has been on a lot in my studio while I’m working. That’s when I need the best music of all. / It has a lot of hip hop and techno and that’s fine because they’re two of the few genres (and I’m loathed to even use that word “genre” which is so irrelevant to most of the good music these days) that are showing any proper progress at all. But in addition to the hip hop and techno it contains many entries from stuff that deservedly belongs in music history. (And which by the way, that awful word is arguably irrelevant to) / I challenge anybody to listen to the whole thing without hearing something they like. Bmail me if it happens to you and we’ll figure out where you’re going wrong. / And you can bmail me if you want the link to the predecessor to this too. See ya round yeah? / S

Sometimes I doodle just for the hell of it, and there are a lot of times that I produce things that are kind of cool that I could never sell as prints. For example: lately I have taken to defacing my magazines – it’s a way to reuse paper, and often the paper stock is quite lovely to draw on (Frankie in particular!) Enjoy :D

I always love finding blogs of my favorite artists sharing their creative process. Whether it’s on Flickr or on a Forum. It’s just nice to know they’re not so full of themselves that they are willing to give us the inside story of how they do their work. Unfortunately I can’t share the images of my work in this post but I will do my best to tell the story of how I create my work. 1. Begin with the ending in mind. / First, I get the idea. It’s usually spurred on by a photo or maybe an artist. Even subject matter. I read something the other day from another artist, he said: “Always have an idea, a story that you want to capture before you put pencil to paper.” This is what I try to do. The sketches that end up being full finished pieces are usually the ones with an idea or story behind them, no matter how small. / So that’s exactly what I do. Visualize what I want to see in my end product. Close my eyes and think and focus on the intension of the piece. Sometimes this takes some research for reference to find out what something looks like exactly. But if you’re doing something that you know there is no reference for it, just let your mind go with the flow. 2. Thumbnails: 90% Planning 10% Execution. / I almost always do thumbnails. 9 out of 10 times I do this. Especially with an idea that is complex and will be time consuming. I will do maybe 2 or 3 thumbnails of an idea. Usually to plan out composition. I try to apply the “Golden Ratio” where ever I can. With all my stuff there is usually a character or characters featured in the artwork. So I plan out where I want them. Review it over a few days. Then decide whether it’s worth completing. If I’ve done the process correctly up to this point then I go to step 3. My tip for composition: Learn the Golden Ratio and know what colors work together. Symmetry is overrated. 3. Scanning and Correcting. / I scan in my thumbnail which is usually about a greeting card size. Blow it up in photoshop to print it out at A3 size. If there is anything that I want changed that will help me when drawing the finished version, I will change it in the drawing with my Wacom Tablet. I can also quickly check if the colors I had in mind work or not. Contrast is very important when considering the how effective your Composition will end up being. The image at A3 gets printed out as two A4’s. I stick them together and get out my custom light table to sketch out the proportions on a clean piece of A3 paper. Tip: Remove what is not necessary. A great Zen practice. 4. Detail and Drawing. / This is definitely one of the fun parts of creating my artwork. Sometimes I add more objects or take away objects. I pretty much fill in all the detail I want to be featured in the final piece that will be colored up in Photoshop. I use a 0.5 Tech Pencil for everything I pencil. My tip for penciling: Make every line count, put intension behind every single line 5. Inking. / This is time consuming, but again very fun. I sometimes don’t use any ink, like in my “Fairytale Christmas” piece. But I decide at this point whether the line work needs ink or not. If the pencil lines are not good enough then I will ink. I use fibre tip ink markers of various sizes. But I generally try to keep all my line widths/weights the same. This is part of how I see anime drawn, so this is what I emulate. It’s appealing and neat to my eyes. My best tip for inking would be: Don’t press down hard. Glide. 6. Scanning Again. / Yes. Again scanning. I have to scan in two parts as I have an A4 scanner. This is tricky to keep each side of the page inline with eachother. Once in photoshop I try my best to line up the two parts of the page and finally I’m left with an A3 image. I lift up the levels of the image to darken the inked lines and to lower the grey scale. I’m then left with cleaning up an ink smudges or finger prints that might have not been rubbed out when I finished inking. My tip for scanning big pages on an A4 scanner: Use masking tape. 7. The Coloring In. / I love coloring. I use a A5 Wacom Tablet to color my linework in photoshop. / I set my brush to a solid line with pressure sensitivity on. So my lines go from thick to thin depending on how hard I press down. Not much to say here, except that I try to keep things simple. I use two tone coloring first and if I really feel like doing more I’ll add a third tone. Thats on the shadowing side. I then concentrate on any back light or highlighting tones, if needed. It usually helps depending on the scene. Again my coloring style emulates anime coloring. What I do sometimes is if theres a character I want to stand out more than others is to use gradients over various areas. It’s subtle but effective and not overwelming. In “Spirits & Demons” I went with a simple color tone bing pink of all colors. I’ve never done an Illustration that used a lot of pink. The reason I did this was to create a feeling of emptiness, slow motion down. It was an image with lots of things going on so I wanted to contrast that with simple use of color by making the image predominantly pink tones. The image also has a white background which is ultimate contrast. Again if I added a background of lets say, Clouds. It would just make the image far too busy. But if I made those clouds lower in coloration than the subject matter that would probably been okay. My tip for coloring: Choose your colors carefully. I do one more thing in all my images. Once everything is flattened into one Layer. I saturate the colors. Then I use Color Balance to add more Red or Blue to the image. It gives it a more unified tone. It’s all about tones. Hope you enjoyed this and that it helps you in some way.

Hi Kids!! We know I get a bit excited about my work and tend to post it before I consider all the options of cool ™! So originally we had this, he looks nice, very cool work indeed! But then i thought YES he should be grey…... / and then i thought sure, but lets do that thing so the cup is whatever the colour of the tea is, i like that trick… i had it so the saucer changed too, but we were losing too much detail with the dark vs the light tees. Check him out here – Earl was rather roboty to begin with! / / ... and what the nose is now was going to be the mouth – ahh so many ways you could do this!! too much fun! Someone is chatty tonight! ;) Much Love, /

“Maybe we have met before?” is a collection of new works by six emerging artists; some of them had only met online, some / still haven’t met at all. In most cases their art preceded themselves, like an avatar, floating in a virtual world. / We had met the art but who was the creator? / Come meet them…. I have some new works and some collaborative pieces, if you are in town head on down to Kick Gallery, 239 High St, Northcote / this coming Saturday the 10th of May, from 6 -9pm. A collection of six collaborative works will also be shown featuring a string of characters that slowly multiplied as they were posted half / way around the world and back to land at Kick. “Maybe we have met before?” a collection of recent illustrations and collaborations by recent illustrators and collaborators. I guess in the year and a half ive been cruising the RedBubble alleys, i’ve done pretty well not to have met with much negativity. So i can’t complain really…...with such a large collective of artists i guess it’s always inevitable that eventually u will be met with some sort of unfriendly interaction. And i have met so many wonderfully talented and friendly artists on here that little incidents like this don’t cause more than a tiny little niggle of frustration really. But i still wanted to have a wee rant about it! Basically, the way i operate here (and everyone is different) i only comment on works if i like them. i see loads i don’t like – but i simply don’t bother to comment. because i dont want to lie nor say something that is only one person’s opinion- who’s to say someone else won’ t LOVE IT. Some may think this is some how cowardly or fake but i simply believe that art is so subjective that unless someone has specifically asked me to critique their work, i won’t pass any negative judgement. I recently received a reply back from another artist to a comment i’d made on their work. my comment was of praise and i truly loved the work, but the word i chose to describe that particular piece (let’s say ‘sketch’) was apparently offensive to the artist who had spent countless hours constucting the piece. i chose my wording based on the style and feel of the piece – wispy whimsical lines and free flowing forms….. but the artist response was quite cold and certainly indicated they were perterbed by my vocab. (let’s say ‘actually it’s a finished final piece, not a SKETCH’) now perhaps im over-reacting, but as an artist i take the time to thank other artists for their comments – they’ve bothered to let me know they like my work – i certainly would never throw it back in their face by correcting them and implying that they were undermining my talent and experience [this person was a self-proclaimed ‘professional’ artist] so i guess what i’ve learnt is choose your words carefully and if someone doesn’t appreciate that you’ve taken the time to let them know how much you love their creation, then leave them alone to enjoy their precious work, and check out some of the other amazing artists the bubble has to offer [and who aren’t all ‘professionals’ either i might add wink] Tiffatron Here are some awesome artworks worth commenting on! / [check ‘em out – they dig your comments!] Tangled Up by i.itch.illustrations Pippa by Steph Granshaw Hovering Cloud by Teejayelle Monsters by CandyRainbow In The Key Of Funk by Tate © Shhhhhhhecret by yellowbee Enjoy! illustration – information provided by wikipedia:

An illustration is a visualization such as a drawing, painting, photograph or other work of art that stresses subject more than form. The aim of an illustration is to elucidate or decorate a story, poem or piece of textual information (such as a newspaper article), traditionally by providing a visual representation of something described in the text.
