I have finally got around to posting a journal entry here on RedBubble, you may already have seen my posts on my myspace page and also on the news page at my website. Been busy busy busy… I am really excited about RedBubble – it’s a fantastic opportunity for Australian artists etc, with great exposure and support. One thing I would dearly love feedback on is how people are promoting themselves in order to sell their work – as a poor struggling artist (one of many!) I could really use the sideline income. I have a few design projects underway at the moment, which has kept me away from my illustration work – but there I’m starting some new pieces soon – so keep an eye out. I’ve just completed a revised version of the OhOhChaos gig poster I did for a guy in Belgium – which I will post for sale, I love the typography…There will also be a small copy of my submission to Daydream magazine in the UK – with the theme Left or Right – I found a little pearler of a quote which I was inspired by. I’m hoping also to post some images of a CD design I am working on for a one-man-band in Scotland – it won’t be for sale obviously, but you’ll be able to buy the CD I’m sure. I’m hoping to get really underway with my illustration – so I can hear from everyone about their thoughts and reactions! I’ll be putting together a little promo with them to send around the studios and magazines in an attempt to bring in some work. / Has been tough lately, which I’m sure many people can relate to, no food, no rent, blah blah blah – but its slowly starting to come together now. Fingers crossed! I’d love to hear what everyone thinks of my work – I’ll be searching around checking out what I’ve missed since my last sojurn in the bubble. It’s a nice easy read – not too long and not too short, with some pretty pictures as well. It was fun to do, I seem to like reflecting on my work and what it means to me and how it’s come into being. Just thought I would let everyone know about an exciting event coming up. I complete my Vis Comm Design degree in November and the graduating students have put together the 2008 Design Exhibition ‘SixtyOne’. It will run from 21st Nov to 5th Dec however you can also have a look at the profiles of all of the students at the address below. There is design, illustration, film and a lot more. I’ve noticed (or possibly failed to find) there is no group for freelance illustrators or designers. I’ve been thinking that it would really useful to create one where all the freelancers can exchange ideas and advice, share their work, get feedback and generally have a whinge about being poor and how to answer those pesky questions about when we’re getting a ‘real’ job. I’d like to see it as invitation only possibly – to make sure that only genuine freelancers join. Would anyone be interested in that sort of thing? If so, let me know and we can submit to create a group (need at least one other person to host). Oh & P.S I’ve updated my website and added a link to my refurbed blog – head along and become a follower! I’ve only got illustrator Kelly Smith following me atm (which is hugely wonderful – check out her work and you’ll see why).

Damien has opened the second challenge in the ‘Elements’ series for entries over at the International Superheroes of Illustration Tone refers to the lightness or darkness of a colour. It can be used to highlight elements, bring them forward, add texture or depth. A good understanding of how light falls is essential. This one will be open for a bit longer than the last to allow people to get their entries in. You have a month to think about your entry and really get something good in.
