  • I’ve spent the day scanning old negatives for an particular project I’m working on and I came across some images of this. Do I know what it is? Oh yes. Do you know what it is? Let’s see. Is this a fake? Oh no its the real deal. Shot in 1982 when the world was a different place. Was it a better time or not? I don’t know. Was it more dangerous. I can’t tell. Was this type of import more prevelant or more insidous? I don’t know. Was it mine. No. I just happened to be somewhere were I saw it and was allowed to photograph it. Have I seen one since? No not for ages and ages and thank goodness for that. Is it still going on? You bet baby. This is Osama’s gift to the west. We give them death and destruction and they give us the same thing back just wrapped up pretty and sprayed with gold paint.

  • another picture of graffitti on King street Newtown in Sydney. I had nothing to do with painting this one I only took the photograph. I’m scanning lots of older work and this was part of my history and the history of this wonderful vibey eccentric inner city suburb.

  • please do not adjust your screen …. this little decommissioned fire tender really is this colour…. Standing in front of the simply gorgeous Lady Penelope is a Doof legend called Earwig…and he is about to proceed into the Supreme Court in Sydney to give evidence in a case involving the owner of the Graffitti Hall of Fame….. ooohhahhh that would explain the suave oh suit then but did he have to park the truck there on the public forecourt of courthouse right in the very middle of the city opposite Hyde Park and bang smack in the centre of the serious CBD …...oh yes… wouldn’t you if you had a hot pink fire engine and you could park it right outside the court just because you could even though you wern’t actually allowed too…..:)

  • Doof Doof….. dancing in the rain while waiting to give evidence in a trial in the Supreme Court in Sydney…. right back in the right hand corner is a police operative wielding a video camera collecting all the evidence on the miscreats who parked their tiny little barely noticeable very plainly painted doof doof fire truck in the public space right outside the court…... cheeky gits…they should all be taken out and smacked…...:)

  • A rare photo of me almost in action. If you see me coming carrying one of my many battered and eccentric old cameras be warned ….. mostly I shoot first and ask questions later…..which makes me ever so slightly dangerous as I’m always loaded and ready to shoot…...:)

  • This was a legendary tribute mural to Miles Davis…. on the wings of a song ….. and was part of the extraordinary street art life of Newtown at a particular time. And thats me lounging about on someone else’s gold Rolls Royce…. This car has made an appearance in a few of my photo’s most notabley Spirt of Sydney! The car belonged to a Mr Tony Spanos Esq who owned and operated the Graffitti Hall of Fame in Alexandria in gritty industrial inner city Sydney…... One of the most eccentric and amazingly arts focused multi millonares I’ve ever met thats for sure….. King of Doof and lover of Graffitti and all around champion of the arts especially if it was a bit cheeky…... Anyway when Newtown started to get a bit gentrifyed a few years back the tidy town people painted it out despite it being one of the most popular and enduring murals around at the time….. such a shame…. / . /

  • Behold, the dreamer cometh, / Come now thereforth / and let us slay him…. / and we shall see / what will become / of his dreams….. This is a picture taken in Newtown recently of a legendary mural that adorns the main throughfare, King street. Its a very old (painted in 1991) illegal bit of street art that has subsequently become an iconic part of the area. A very simple design. The face of Martin Luther King next to a large and now very faded reresentation of the world and under that are the first couple of words from a very famous speech given by Dr King. ’ I have a dream….”Underneath it is a representation of the Aboriginal flag. It was a wonderful speech and its a wonderful and enduring mural. It was painted all that time ago by two people who were both very damaged and maybe even a bit mad at the time. He was on the run from the law for a terrible crime and she had just been abandoned by her husband, leaving her destitute with three tiny children and an imminant eviction. They were both artists and met one day when they were both painting something on the side of a building on the same street. In their mutally recognized despair and confusion they decided to reach inside to somewere really deep and give a gift of themselves to all around in order to stave off the darkness that otherwise would have engulfed them and tumbled them right down into the pits of hell. Not far from where they were was a blank three story wall on the side of building on the main street. Perfect. So less than two weeks after they they had met they painted this great humanist message on the side of this building, knowing full well that they risked imprisonment for defacing the street with this simple but profound message of peace and love. And they poured it out over two days and two nights. Never even signed it but rather gave it as a gift to anyone who could see it for what it really meant. Then walked away in the silence of the night not really expecting much from it. But the people of Newtown took this gift in to their hearts and in the ensuing 18 years it has become one of the best loved and most iconic representations of this amazingly diverse and vibrant community. Almost a sacred symbol of Newtown really. Funny story this one. The artists never made a penny out of it and are not even really know for their own work but sometimes just sometimes one of them reflects on the inanity and shallowness of the artworld and wonders why she bothers and then she remembers that sometimes just sometimes the gift of the spirit moves in her and no matter how hard it all is sometimes …. that it really is worthwhile to give of yourself. That it can make a difference to work from the heart. And that thought helps her get through the next bit of time.

  • UPDATED BELOW. PLEASE READ. This rabbit was slightly injured and had one ear that would/couldn’t be raised like the other one. That probably accounted for the very shy nature because it couldn’t hear well in multiple directions simultaneously for protection. But it didn’t run off either so I did some quick shots of him and his oddly shaped face. Maybe it’s old and has jowls like old men. Maybe his parents were brother and sister. Or maybe he’s a rare breed of expensive hopper. One thing’s for sure tho: he’s abandoned in a neighbourhood park along with up to hundreds more rabbits. Crosswoods Park is the illegal and unethical “dumping ground” for Easter Bunnies ‘off the bloom’ faster than lilies, pets that chewed every wire in the house, and animals that are injured or sick. But the side effect of so many former pets out free is that they will often approach people and some will even let you pet them. I’ve feed a few by hand and it’s a heartwarming experience with a wild animal. :-) All proceeds from the sales of this image in any format here on Red Bubble are being donated to Voices For Animals’ hosts and members to donate to the charity of their choice. Please make a purchase or send other animal lovers to this image for them to consider purchasing. Thank you very much!

  • Computers are pretty much part of our lives now but I remember the horror of the first Win 95 window pop up and seeing FATAL ERROR. ...I totally freaked and was ready to take the computer back to the department store for a refund…before a friend gently and laughingly explained what was going on…....but I never got over that “in your face” feeling of Fatal Error and Fatal Exception. / ..I mean why Fatal ….., that’s so fatal, why not some cute character like me popping up saying, “Don’t Stress Darlink, but we have to close for a bit” And what about “Illegal Operation”...I swear the first time it happened I thought the stormtroopers were going to break down the front door! I really think Bill and his team could have put a little more thought into the trauma windows 95 could cause before inflicting it on the public. / Available as a card, print and poster. / Image copyright © 2008 Shanina Conway. / Copying and displaying or redistribution of this image without permission from the artist is strictly prohibited /

  • Opium sap oozes from the slit seed pods of poppy flowers in a hilltribe field in northern Thailand. Before the effective ban on poppy farming was enforced in the late 1990s, fields of poppies bloomed across the northern hills in the winter months. The raw opium sap was scraped off the bulbs by the farmers after it had congealed from a milky white sap into a stick brown substance. Some of it was smoked by local addicts and the rest was sold to be processed into morphine then heroin in clandestine refineries. The hills of the Shan State in Burma are still a major source of the world’s illicit opiates.

  • Graffiti outside the Georges Pompidou Centre, Paris. I have put together a calendar of graffiti that I found in Melbourne, Australia. It can be found by clicking on the following link:

  • There were dozens of fields with cannabis and opium poppy, and the villagers houses were stacked with sticky ganja buds. The Mien hilltribe farmers sold it for $4 a kilo…before they were busted. Northern Thailand, early 1980s.

  • I photographed Antonio in 1977. I was working on a story pertaining to abominable housing of illegal alien migrant farm workers in Homestead, Florida. Basically they were slave labor, housed in concentration camp environments. Enjoy your next tomato! Nikon FTn, 50mm f.14, TriX film.
