When I saw the bear theme on the front page, I decided to upload one of my favourite pastels. The ref pic was taken at the Johannesburg Zoo, in South Africa and the background was invented :) With permanent ice sheets retreating and habitat being reduced, I felt I had at least immortalised this guy in a landscape which he would no doubt prefer to be in.

These cubs were about 7 months old and very playful, but not just now! We were very lucky with our bear sightings and I was able to get some good close-up shots. Everytime I was washing the dishes in front of my window I kept looking at that fantastic scene .The snow had covered all the roof and at the same time my window ,it was completely dark ,until the snow began to melt .What a sight but I had to remove the icy snow with my hand and push inch by inch the window to open enough so I could go through the small window and take some shot .You should have seen me ,all wet and very happy of my idea. / I called it «communion» because ,at first the two icesticks were just one and melted until they got separated but it looks like they are reaching to get together again. The drop is the communion between them,a« metaphore» but for me it was magical. It’s like the time is suspended…..an untouched pic… / / /

Bow Lake. Alberta, Canada / March 2008 Inspired by comments from Stuart Chapman and Rhana Griffin on my last upload of this stunning setting, I decided to revisit this location… if only I could have actually revisited for real, but sadly only through my many pictures… This really was an expanse of breath taking scenery and I was more than happy to pull this one out of the bag…

The Gentoo Penguin is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species Melting sea ice and overfishing have triggered a dangerously rapid decline in penguin populations on the Antarctic peninsula – a direct result of global warming, warns a new report from the WWF. Temperatures on the frozen continent are rising five times faster than the global average due to the unprecedented rate of climate change, pushing four species perilously close to extinction. Warmer temperatures are forcing penguins to raise their young on increasingly thinner and more precarious ice floes, while stronger winds mean many eggs and chicks are being blown away from their parents before they are able to survive on their own. The gentoo, chinstrap and adélie – along with the emperor, the largest penguin species in the world – are now struggling to survive as melting sea ice destroys nesting sites and reduces vital food sources, such as krill.
