Background Information: / Moraine Lake is a glacially fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 kilometres outside the Village of Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. It is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 6183 feet (1884 m). The lake has a surface area of 0.5 km². The lake, being glacially fed, does not reach its crest until mid to late June. However, when it is full, it is a beautiful shade of blue. The lake gets its color from the refraction of light off the rock flour deposited in the lake on a continual basis. Background Information: / Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessed from the Icefields Parkway. It was named for Ebenezer William Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area. The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft). During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake, and these suspended rock particles give the lake a bright, turquoise color. Because of its bright color, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists in the park. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefield Parkway. The lake is fed by the Peyto Creek, which drains water from the Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield), and flows into the Mistaya River. Background Information: / This picture is taken near Athabasca Falls . Athabasca Falls in Jasper National Park is just 23 metres high. However, it is not known for its height. Instead it is known for the force of the falling water due to the quantity of water flowing. Even on a cold morning in the fall, copious amounts of water flow over the falls. A layer of hard quartzite has allowed the falls to cut into the softer limestone below carving the short gorge and a number of potholes. White water rafting often starts below the falls to travel downstream on the Athabasca River to Jasper, Alberta. It is a class 5 waterfall, with a drop of 80 ft (24 m) and a width of 60 ft (18 m). • Athabascar Glacier, Icefields National Park, Alberta, Canada. / March 2008 Taken on our road trip through the Rocky Mountains in March this year, we were already falling behind on this day, losing time after so many great stops and photo opportunities along the way through the Icefields National Park onto our next destination of Pocahontas, just outside of Japser. We had agreed that we would have to limit our stops to reach our destination before sunset, but when we turned a corner and saw this, we couldn’t resist! A foolish decision to save time, we decided not to go through the usual process of jumping out of the car and putting on our many layers of warm clothes, hats and gloves… this would just be a quick stop. Big mistake! This place was cold… this place was very cold… this place was fer-fer-fer-freezing! Not only that, but the best shooting point was actually a short run down the road… it would have been a walk had it not been so cold! Destination reached, we set about shooting, fingers shaking, body temperatures dropping… it wasn’t long before we couldn’t stand any more and headed back to the car… ran back to the car! Claire even getting hysterical with laughter during the process – as they say, we could but only laugh! Anyway, lesson learned! We had been so careful before and always been appropriately dressed… this wouldn’t happen again! Glad to have got at least one shot from the experience!

  • Considered one of the most scenic highways in the world, the Icefields Parkway offers an ever-changing view of waterfalls, emerald lakes, alpine meadows and snow-capped peaks. For two hundred and thirty kilometres, from Lake Louise to the Jasper townsite, the Parkway winds along the shoulder of the Great Divide and passes by the spectacular mountains of the Eastern Main Ranges of the Canadian Rockies. It follows the headwaters of three major rivers and crosses two major passes en route.

  • This aerial shot of the heart-shaped confluence of glacial flows was taken above the Kaskawulsh Glacier in the Kluane National Park area of the Yukon, Canada. It was shot on 31 August 2008 while I was a passenger aboard an Icefields Discovery Flight with Andy Williams in the pilot’s seat. I only had a few seconds to take this view as I was shooting towards the light, but I composed the shot carefully to compensate for glare. I was using two cameras, a Pentax K100D with my 18-125mm lens and a Pentax K200D with my 70-300mm lens. This was taken with the K100D, through the cockpit perspex. This unusual aspect is the result of some great flying by a very experienced pilot, because the focal length was a mere 34mm. The shot has not been cropped or post-edited in any way. F5.6, 1/2000 sec, ISO 200, focal length 34mm. Featured in MADE BY NATURE group, May 2009. Featured in AT THE EDGE group, June 2009. Featured in VANISHING POINTS, August 2009. Featured in FROM THE COCKPIT, December 2009.
