  • winter of 2005/2006, river in the great smoky mountains, was a great snow that year, this is a color shot, not black and white :)

  • Cold winter landscape

  • Well if you wonder what the weather is like here this image sort of says it all. Cold and Snowy! I went out before dawn on Sunday before church looking for sunrise. there was none so I shifted gears and and found my self lieing in the snow and ice to get a low enough angle to capture the Ice reaching across the waters of the Tieton River after a week or more of sub-freezing temperatures. By the way it is snowing again!

  • An abstract piece created byt the cold of winter along the waters of the Naches river. Ice, bubbles and colorful rocks form a nice palette

  • Mt. Hood with the White River flowing down in front on a cold January day. My first snowshoeing adventure!

  • Filling up a glass of water and noticed this out of the kitchen window. Literally ran outside with a t-shirt and slippers on to get this before it went. First few shots were a golden amber in color then it went to this before it disappeared. Only snapped about 30 bracketed shots before it was gone. Gonna go a repot my orchid while this is uploading (and I finished it, thanks dial-up). Hope you like it. Please critique… print available here and on my website. • I took several pictures of water streaming over the ice and rocks of the Kootenay River, and the colours and textures of this particular rapid made a stunningly elemental composition. There is something about the movement of water over rocks and ice that always reminds me of the raw power of winter in the Rocky mountains. Photographed with my Canon Rebel XT and 15-55mm lens.

  • St-Laurence River, Montreal, Quebec, Canada All proceeds from this image will be going to the “Helping Hands” group to help support the non-profit mission of feeding the hungry children of Africa. Philadelphia Mission’s Website

  • Looking down on the River Nairn on a cold wintry day, Scottish Highlands /

  • This was taken the day before the plane came down in the Hudson. About 30 miles north (Cornwall, NY).

  • Hudson River, Nyack, NY / January 2009

  • Sometimes you view your images for the first time and find something in them that wasn’t obvious as you were shooting the photo. This was an extremely cold winter’s evening, with a snow squall approaching rapidly from the west. The West Branch of the Susquehanna river was completely frozen over solid, which is a fairly unusual occurence in central Pennsylvania. If you look closely at the clouds, you might discover an image of God looking down upon the desolate winter landscape. This is not a “manipulated” or “composite image”. There was no “painting” or any changes made in the picture. The contrast was compensated slightly using PhotoMatrix Pro, to expand the dynamic range. The image was cropped to 8 X 10 format. Otherwise, this is just as the camera saw it. The photo was shot with a Canon EOS 10D camera using a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L zoom lens @ 126mm. The shutter speed was 1/125th sec at f/8. The camera’s ISO was set to 200. A Manfrotto tripod was used with a remote shutter release. Your comments are always welcome! Constructive criticism is appreciated. © 2009 Gene Walls All copyright and reproduction rights are retained by the artist.
